"Make it feel like a panic attack, but also a rock song," was the single request Camron Rushin sent to Todd Pruner with the acoustic version of his song "BITTER PILL". This is the system The Best Around has used since they formed last April during the Covid-19 pandemic. Without any specific instructions, each player lays down their tracks before passing the song to the next to be recorded in their own home studio, bathroom, or tool shed. "BITTER PILL" is the first amongst a slew of singles the band is preparing to release and then collect into a full album. Genre-bending, "BITTER PILL" runs the gamut of new wave, post-punk, neofolk, psychedelic rock and 90s indie. Much like a panic attack the anxiety is layered. An acoustic guitar lays the foundation, followed quickly by drum and bass and then a spine-tingling, carnival-style organ chases the guitar line while Rushin's vocals unload his anxieties. This all culminates into nerve-shredding guitar and organ solos by Jon Merz. It's like if The Animals played 'House of the Rising Sun' on LSD and adderall while trying to escape a haunted house. The song was mixed by Evan Kaspar at Estuary Studios and mastered by Erik Wofford of Cacophony Recorders both in Austin, TX. "BITTER PILL" will be released September 1, 2021 on all the streaming platforms. The band will also be running a social media campaign to promote this release which will be followed by a release of a music video.

This song is about freeing oneself from addictions. In the song an addiction is described and thereafter characterized by "Violet," in dialogue with ones higher wise-self. Ultimately Violet is unsure she can let go of what binds her, but ultimately what is truly needed is to sit still in one's blood, to allow one's wounds to be, and to no longer fill the wounds with false medicine that does not allow it to scab over and heal. The Best Around is an indie alternative rock band from Austin, TX that formed in the Spring of 2020. In order to maintain social distancing, each member recorded their parts separately in their own homes. Rarely collaborating or discussing how the songs should turn out, instead files would just show up in inboxes allowing each member to decide what to add. Despite mixing up the order, this is how all their songs have been produced.
