He set down his glass of wine, preparing to take the stage for his performance. He was a jazz-rock musician.

In the tavern, beneath the stage, patrons clutching their drinks had grown somewhat impatient with waiting. Without exception, they were loyal fans captivated by his voice—youthful yet mature and rich—and his brilliant electric guitar skills. They all discussed the sacrifices they'd made for this repeatedly delayed show, jokingly teasing that "this guy must have hit the bottle hard again." Suddenly the lights dimmed, and an invisible wall of electric guitar sound, interwoven with noise, descended before the curtain. Drinking glasses were put down, giving way to thunderous applause.

One song followed another, with cheers growing louder after each performance. The invisible heat waves of the summer night nearly ignited the restless room, blowing the roof to the sky. He barely broke a sweat, even though his voice was more passionate than anyone else's in the venue, even though the strings of his guitar had almost worn thin.

He moved like a heavy weighted feather, carrying his guitar, dancing nimbly across the scales with ever-changing, versatile movements.

He raised up a bottle of that non-alcoholic brew, laughing his way down from the stage. He was a funk singer.

'It's just a state of mind you gotta maintain, baby,' he explained his wild spending and high-rolling lifestyle. 'You feel me, man? Walking that tightrope keeps your heart pumping real clear, every single moment.'

Some squares turned their noses up at his crazy stories, others called him nothing but a jive turkey. Maybe they were right on the money—but under those stage lights, when he got down and funky, he became the court jester of these gray times, like a cool breeze flying around that high wire. His orange guitar would start to shine, his brass horn would gleam like gold. The brother knew his music inside and out, he could read what the crowd was hungry for.

'That ain't no metaphor, jack,' he grinned, 'I did my time with the circus—I'm talking about the real deal.'

City lights dance across the blue glass towers, leaping onto his shades and twisting into question mark shapes.

The GPS app keeps glitching out. He's been weaving through these spider-web streets for what feels like forever, but his destination stubbornly stays locked at 3 miles away. The blazing sun has him drenched in sweat, while the radio voice in his headphone starts to blur into static. He gives up, pivots toward the nearest coffee shop – all he wants is an iced coffee and a moment to breathe.

The barista behind the counter gets distracted by his unusual shades, spilling a bit of coffee as she pours. He instinctively adjusts his frames, mutters a thanks. Takes the paper cup, fumbles for a second trying to find the sip hole.

He can't figure out why his luck's been so trash. This city's chaos hits different – louder than anywhere he's been before. Traffic never stops screaming past, and now this busted navigation has dumped him... where exactly? He's got no clue. If we're keeping score of all his bad breaks, well, not being able to see probably counts as strike one.

But he's not sweating it. Dials that number, decides to drop this pointless stubborn streak. A singer's voice picks up on the other end, laughing as she asks where the hell her beloved keyboardist has wandered off to now.

The microphone is set up, and the record button is pressed. He puts on his headphones, like starting a special ritual on the radio. He’s the most popular DJ at midnight. 

His listeners love the call-in song requests. Some voices on the other end are rough like sandpaper, patiently asking for a jazz song from the ’50s; some grab the microphone and insist on a reggae tune; and the shyest caller comes every week with a Chopin nocturne, then mysteriously disappears after the song. His notebook is full of quick, messy notes, with the word “FUNK” circled heavily in the middle.

He interviews the guitarist always holding a glass, listens to the singer’s story of balancing on a wire while enjoying the thrill. He loves these stories, even more than the music itself. Even when the phone lines are flooded with ringing, pushing to play the next song, he patiently shares the most exciting stories in a calm voice—the radio creates a safe distance, protecting him from the fans' wild energy.

City dance tracks smoothly connect, and the funk atmosphere fills the deep night. He smiles as he answers the first call of the night—as if the old-fashioned phone on his desk is really connected to a physical line.

A blind producer? Like... blind blind? Yea! Shanti Vega AKA The Big Blind barely sees — and he makes music with a frenetic talking computer! How the hell does he do it? IDK, ask him…
Trained in jazz piano and rooted in classical music, Shanti infuses electronic music with elements from various genres, crafting a style that's both eclectic and distinctive. His versatility spans from EDM to pop, rap vocals, acid bebop solos, smooth jazz arrangements, and avant-garde improvisations.
In 2023, he released his debut album Unrequited Self Love Story with the emerging label @wearesilkenwood. He followed up in 2024 with the Funny Money EP, blending country, dubstep, and jazz into a fun cinematic experience.
He has also collaborated with underground labels such as @ponies-at-dawn @crossoverforcharity @antithesysmusic @phono-records @novelchapters @intrinzic-music and @0ssembli.
In parallel, he leads The Big Blind Trio, a jazz-electroacoustic project that pays tribute to electronic music icons of the last decade. He's also a professional producer for a new wave of experimental emerging artists, and has worked with Spain’s Fundación Juan March on a classical-electronic fusion project.
