Carcassonne, France, September 2015. In the surreal and beautiful setting of the Château Comtal (Count’s Castle) a couple of us here at R$N saw Vox Low perform one of their very first live sets, bathed in blue and red wash lights. We and most others came away saying it was aptly monumental and a highlight of what was an outstanding line up at Convenanza, the Andrew Weatherall Festival. The band are shortly to make their UK live debut at the Alfresco Festival in Tunbridge Wells, so we are delighted they have done an exclusive mix for us, and Jean-Christophe and Benoit told us a little of their story...

Inside & Around Crammed - Episode 11: Don The Tiger

To celebrate the upcoming release of his album “Matanzas” on Crammed Discs in October, Berlin-based Catalan experimentalist Don The Tiger (aka Adrián de Alfonso) has prepared an incredible mix containing no less than 117 excerpts of diverse music that inspired him. Adrián has collaborated with the likes of Lydia Lunch, Go-Betweens founder Robert Forster, Carla Bozulich and Lucrecia Dalt (who coproduced his new album). Since moving to Berlin, Don The Tiger takes inspiration from everything he misses in that city -be it rumba, MPB, baroque fantasy, guabina, flamenco or Fania Records- and mixes it with musique concrète and elaborate sampling techniques, delivering it all in a way that owes more to primitive rock'n'roll than to anything else. 

Here’s a little note from him about this very special program: “This mix is a little homage to some of the music and the fantastic bands that have influenced me during the making of "Matanzas". Like that record this is an obsessive collage, where recent loves meet old companions, eroded mp3 exports whisper in the ear of sturdy flacs, and stereo joyfully converts to mono. 117 mercilessly chopped and screwed tracks which are as paradoxical, whimsical, comical, joyous, relentless, pathetical, and romantic as I can only dream my music was. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did while weaving it!"

Lodown presents: Dreems "I've Decided To Stop DJing Til I Can Again"

Attendances, class 87, born in Ancona, a small town in the east coast of Italy, is an Italian DJ and producer influenced by many different kinds of music, specially Progressive, Trance, New Wave, Electrobeat, EBM, Industrial, Letfield, Techno, Indie Dance, Dark Disco, and Electronic. He begins DJing almost as a game and from this experience he started attending and then working as a DJ in clubs and social centers such as the Thermos and Kontatto.

During his time spent at the university, he began a phase of dedicating himself to the study of different softwares for the creation of sound; producing, at the same time, songs intended to work as a photograph of the soul with the passing of time. After several years of work, in 2014 he started the project called "Attendances" and launched his podcast series “Retrofuture". He also started to release some tracks on different labels such as PlayPal, Maleante, Esthétique and Emerald & Doreen.

In 2015, he became part of REDD crew (Raval Electronic Dance Department), a well-known party reality in Ancona, and in 2018 he joined the Italian-Spanish crew called Carajillo Electronique, playing in different clubs and festivals in Italy, Spain and other countries such as: BE ONE’S club - Arezzo (IT), Torrione Club - Città di Castello (IT), 25 April REDD BBQ - Ancona (IT), Camping Electronique Festival - Caprese Michelangelo (IT), Freedonia Club - Barcelona (ES), Umami Club - Manresa (ES), Sideral Club - Barcelona (ES), Slow Club - Barcelona (ES), El Casal - Valencia (ES) and ÖND 3rd Birthday at UBU in Rennes (FR), just to name a few.

The Seventh NIR Chapter sees as guest the Philadelphia duo Zillas on Acid. Thomas Roland and James Weissinger, honing their skills for almost 15 years as resident DJs at MAKING TIME, Philadelphia's never-ending nightlife institution, the Zillas have recently turned their attention to original production. With the 2019 release of their Black Cat EP (Optimo Music) and the She Takes NRG EP (Ivan Smagghe’s Les Disques de la Mort), among other releases, the Zillas have garnered support from fellow futuristic travelers like Roman Flügel, Jennifer Cardini, Justin Strauss, The Juan MacLean, Cooper Saver, and many more. Deep in the studio or out in the club at their monthly mutant gatherings 'Melt You Down' and 'Acid Banquet', the Zillas mix slow-motion death disco, dubbed-out drum machine music, and of course ACID to excite party people from all planets.
