London-based singer-songwriter Douglas Dare releases new EP, following on from his debut album Whelm. Named after album track Caroline and new track If I Knew I Were Alive, it also features remixes by fellow label mate Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles and Houndstooth’s own electronic producer Ross Tones aka Throwing Snow.

Caroline has always been a precious track for Douglas, one of the first tracks he recorded and a story in which he imagines his grandfather is writing to a loved one during the war. As the only song on his debut album that is stripped down to just his voice and piano playing, and it being a favourite amongst fans at his concerts, it was a natural choice as a first single.

The new track If I Knew I Were Alive Douglas wrote by creating beats, looping them and recording parts live. Dancing around to the beats in his room, he started singing melodies and coming up with ideas that he wouldn’t usually have, sitting at the piano. The idea that we can do a lot more if only we appreciated our own ability and opportunity encouraged Douglas to not take the track to anyone else to re-record it, but to work with what he had created himself.

“The recording has this demo quality, which I really enjoy. I love how revealing a demo can be. It seems to expose the fundamental ideas the songwriter had and the basic quality of the recording is very revealing. One of my favourite records is PJ Harvey’s ‘4 Track Demos’, where the songs are so stripped back that you can appreciate the finest details.” – Douglas Dare

Ryan Lee West, who crafted the Rival Consoles remix of album track Swim explains, “the track existed in a minimal state for a while, and I kept thinking something was missing. There's always something missing! And then out of casual chance, I was sorting through my portable recorder files, and I came across a recording of an installation that I did, which included four motors hitting glockenspiel or xylophone notes at random. I chopped it up in a few seconds and it worked perfectly. It adds texture and movement to the remix. But what's important about these sounds is that they are not in time. I think this remix creates sense of space, subtlety and physicality.”

"The original is so well put together, and the vocal so unique that it was a hard one to approach. I set out to reflect the beauty of the vocal in the intro, so that I could build it into something darker later on. This also mirrors the meaning of the vocal. The last sections are meant to evoke feelings of being washed away by a torrent” – Ross Tones about his Throwing Snow remix of Nile.

Douglas Dare and Rival Consoles will both perform a special in-store show at Rough Trade, presenting their respective EP releases, before embarking on an Erased Tapes U.S. West Coast tour and Douglas accompanying Fink throughout 13 countries in North America and Europe from September to November as their special guest.

Following on from his contemporary dance scores Music For Falling From Trees and Music For Congregation, November 28th, 2011 will see Broderick return with a brand new work released on Erased Tapes Records, entitled Music For Confluence. Created for documentary filmmakers Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott, the soundtrack takes the listener through waves of stark emotions.

The release of Music For Confluence will be preceded by the double A-side single Old Time / Solace In Gala on November 7th and includes an exclusive digital 14-track bonus score entitled Music For Grace And Mercy – a film of Haitians helping Haitians.

Jessica Moss shares an excerpt of a work in progress, recently recorded live in her rehearsal space, that offers a lovely preview of new material to which concertgoers may find themselves treated in 2018 (alongside her debut opus Pools Of Light).

"Untitled 3" displays various techniques and influences that lie at the heart Moss's solo music: building stacked slow-burn string themes through live looping, sampling and pitch-shifting that beautifully balance drone and melody, gradually introduce further electronic, oscillation and synthesis textures, and channel folkways tropes from Eastern Europe and the Middle East – in this case, gesturing towards the Klezmer tradition perhaps most explicitly since her work in the mid-2000s with Black Ox Orkestar.

Renowned for its passionate performances, both live and recorded, the Duke Quartet has established itself as one of Europe's most dynamic and exciting ensembles. The group's versatility and fearless approach to music-making has led them into an unequalled range of projects including pop, education, dance and their own compositions all of which have been highly acclaimed for its quality of musicianship, technique and diversity of repertoire.
The Duke Quartet's passion for the new and a desire to push back the boundaries is evident in their commitment to commissioning and performing new works from composers. Most recently the quartet has premiered works by Deirdre Gribben , Rolf Hind, Stephen McNeff, Joby Talbot and Philip Venables. This, together with the player's love and command of the traditional string quartet repertoire, has helped them to become one of the most sought-after string quartets. They have been giving recitals for over seventeen years becoming a vibrant part of the national chamber music scene, performing in the UK's top venues and festivals with such artists as Marc-Andre Hamelin, Alexander Baillie and Jessye Norman and broadcasting regularly on  Radio 3. Their international schedule has taken them to countries as far apart as Columbia, the Yemen, South Africa and Japan.
The Quartet's outstanding musicianship can by heard on their many CDs. The Dukes' debut recording, featuring works by Barber, Dvorak and Philip Glass, was selected at the 1995 Cannes Classical Music Awards as one of the world's top debut CDs of the year and their disc featuring Berg's Lyric Suite and Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht received glowing reviews for its intense musicality and technical excellence. The 2002 recording of music by Kevin Volans, with whom they have had a close working relationship for many years, received a Gramophone Award nomination for best contemporary recording. The Dukes most recent release is Steve Reich's Different Trains and Marc Mellits String Quartet No 2 on Black Box.
Following The Duke's work on Morrissey's first solo album Viva Hate, the quartet has developed into one of the most in-demand string quartets in the pop industry. Their unique and rich timbre, coupled with intuitive arrangements from violist John Metcalfe, has flavoured music from many top bands including Blur, the Cranberries and The Corrs. They have worked many times with the Pretenders, collaborating on an acoustic greatest hits album, Isle of View, and touring the UK and the USA. In 2004, the quartet toured Australia with the Dixie Chicks.
The Duke Quartet has enjoyed a long association with the renowned Belgian dance company Rosas, with whom they have performed worldwide. In 2003 they toured Europe to celebrate Rosas' 20th anniversary year performing Beethoven's Grosse Fugue and Bartok's Fourth String Quartet. In 2006/07 the Dukes and Rosas took part in another European tour performing works by Bartok, Beethoven and Schoenberg in Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the UK.
Education and outreach work is an important part of the quartet's output and during the last ten years they have given over 400 workshops and concerts in schools, colleges, hospitals, prisons and universities. This ranges from simple demonstration and games with primary school children to detailed discussion of technique and composition with university students.
Recent engagements have included performances for Cheltenham and Soundwaves Festivals, Manchester's QuartetFest, BBC's John Cage Festival, Wigmore Hall London, Queen's Hall Edinburgh and The Gate Cardiff.
