The insidious nature of doubt, like a dormant disease, breaking your surface periodically, a pox un-summoned. Virile Strain Transmission was an attempt to erase the contagion of doubt from “apostille’s” psychic apparatus, by magnifying each one. It was also an attempt to pull apart the practises which had become ingrained: once you learn something it becomes a crutch, a means to support yourself in unknown terrain. I was interested in being in unknown terrain without a crutch, up shit creek paddle-less. Learning tricks of the trade builds up your resistance to change, but eventually doubt breaks the surface, makes you question what you’re doing. Doubts have no mercy. They’re always there, sometimes buried, sometimes a full-blown rash. Virile Strain Transmission was an attempt to learn by unlearning, to explore all the doubts I had, blow them out of proportion, examine them and be without mercy.

Some statistics: THE EXs 25th CD/LP release on their own Ex Records and 123rd release in total. ‘Catch My Shoe’ is the first CD with their new singer Arnold de Boer. The songs range from The Ex versions of high energy Gurage music from Ethiopia (‘Eyoleyo’) to hypnotic full on dance tunes like ‘24 Problems’ and ‘Double Order’. The sound is unmistakably The Ex but with new vocals and Konono style catchy guitar riffs from Arnold and crunchy baritone guitar melodies from Terrie and Andy all propelled along by Kat’s relentless driving ‘African’ beats.

Passer du clavecin au clavicorde ou à l'orgue était sans doute habitude courante pour Jean-Sébastien Bach.
Peu importe l'émetteur sonore car c'est plutôt la pensée et l'intellect qui comptent pour le maître de Leipzig : la forme de l'œuvre, la tonalité et les contours mélodiques ont plus d'importance que l'instrument en soi. Et d'ailleurs, avec ce travail de la pensée musicale, Bach n'a t-il pas imaginé, en utilisant les différents claviers, l'instrument à venir : le piano tel une synthèse entre le clavecin, l'orgue et le clavicorde ? 
Soucieux des échanges entre les différentes écoles européennes, permettant aux créateurs de copier, transcrire ou adapter l'œuvre d'un contemporain, Bach l'a fait avec ses propres partitions. Au-delà du passage des siècles, Busoni, Siloti, Kempff ou Kurtág feront résonner l'orgue, l'orchestre ou les chœurs de cantates vers le piano.

Il faudra désormais compter avec l'ensemble Contraste qui livre ici sa vision du Cantor : école de la liberté qui ne trahit jamais la pensée et laisse évoluer les arabesques, les beautés du chant, la rigueur de construction et les polyphonies jubilatoires.
