The Circle

"Take aim at his heart now!" he yelled. "And shoot for the head!" shouted back his armed colleague. But with tears in the formers' eyes, he knew he had already lost the fight. The longer he wore on in the battle with his foe, the greater his uncertainty. 
This song is about a mercenary remembering an encounter with a fellow mercenary. They were both after the same target and the first, unarmed mercenary was forced to kill his armed colleague with a car.
Listening to the story of the song, one may get the sense that betrayal and regret are central themes; however, they are only one of the many threads unfurled in the song. Violence and mercy are more central, especially within the mind's eye of the protagonist re-living what had occurred on one fateful day.
A violent mind may not breed mercy, but mercy will never hold a place (or a candle, if you will) in the minds of those whose idea of violence is not honourable and just -- in a moral sense, of course. Moral compasses change direction from person to person, from time to time, and from situation to situation. They can even, sometimes, point to one's own fate -- mercifully or not.

The Failed States is a creative project based in an aged care facility in the leafy suburb of Wantirna, Melbourne Australia. 

Initially a recreational outlet, allowing residents to express themselves through music, poetry and sitting still, The Failed States has since taken on a life of it own. 

Anguished songs about other residents' grandchildren being too loud at the table tennis table, or laments of lukewarm, semi-set pudding were gradually replaced by powerful pieces about climate change, urban decay, relationship breakdown and stolen dentures.

There are no permanent members of The Failed States, we live on, as age, petty rivalries, and forgetfulness takes us all.

The Failed States tries to perform in the common room on the second Tuesday of every month, after lunch.
