Our fiddler Claire comes from Scotland and this is her favourite slow Scottish tune – one she has played and sung since she was a wee lassie. Although it has a traditional sound the melody was composed by Iain MacLachlan of Benbecula in 1958 as a pipe lament called Dr Mackey’s Farewell to Creagorry. It was subsequently used for a BBC series called ‘The Dark Island’ in 1963, which was filmed on South Uist. Words were added later and it is now one of the most well-known Scottish songs. We play it as an instrumental, starting with solo violin and piano, building up a 3-part harmony on the violins and adding whistle on the final verse.

Banjo plays a fiddle tune; it rings from earth to tree.

Table bare, we gathered round, bluegrass music rang.

Paddle wheel beats like a drum, plays a southern song.
