In this conversation, we talk about Harsha Walia's new fantastic book, Border and Rule Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism (Haymarket, 2021), which draws an international map of the border imperialist regime in its geographic, historic, and legal complexities. We then proceed in trying to envision the various forms of internationalist solidarities that emerge in the struggle against this global regime, following in particular Indigenous and/or Black resistance.

Harsha Walia is the award-winning author of Undoing Border Imperialism (2013). Trained in the law, she is a community organizer and campaigner in migrant justice, anti-capitalist, feminist, and anti-imperialist movements, including No One Is Illegal and Women's Memorial March Committee.

Waiting is a particular temporal praxis, whose political dimension is more likely to be missed by those who make people wait than by those who have to wait for a visa, for food, for access to the city, etc. Shahram Khosravi shares with us some of his reflections on this action of waiting; its Kafkaian dimension, but also its revolutionary potential.

Shahram Khosravi is a former taxi driver and currently an accidental Professor of Anthropology at Stockholm University. Khosravi is the author of some academic books and some articles but he prefers to write stories. He has been an active writer in the international press. The past year he has been working on an art book on Waiting and two years ago he started Critical Border Studies, a network for scholars, artists and activists to interact. Hailing from the island of Bermuda, Quito Swan is Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at Indiana University Bloomington. An award-winning historian of Black internationalism, he is the author of Pauulu’s Diaspora: Black Internationalism and Environmental Justice (University Press of Florida, 2020), Black Power in Bermuda: The Struggle for Decolonization (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), and Pasifika Black: Oceania, Anticolonialism, and the African World (New York University Press, 2022). Pauulu’s Diaspora was awarded the African American Intellectual History Association’s (AAIHS) 2021 Pauli Murray Book Prize and a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) 2021 Fellowship Book Award Prize.

Together we discuss the various methodologies they use in this project that documents Indigenous and migrant deaths in detention by settler states (in particular Australia), as well as the crucial need to practice these investigations in the utmost respect of the grief of those who lost a relative or a community member.

In this conversation, Léopold talks with Audrey Albert about the Chagossian struggle since the early 1960s deportation of the entire nation from its archipelago to make space for a British-owned, U.S. Air Force-leased military base. We discuss about the fight for reparations in Britain and Mauritius, the ambiguous outcome of the recent change of British citizenship legislation for Chagossians, the sovereignty claims of the Mauritian state, as well as the artist work Audrey has been undertaking around these questions.

Audrey Albert is a maker, artist and photographer. Her research-led practice enables her to consider and investigate themes of national identity, collective memory, displacement, tradition, and denial. Born in Mauritius with Chagossian origins, she studied Political Science with a specialisation in Media and Communication at the University of Mauritius from 2009 - 2013. Audrey is currently based in Manchester after studying photography at the Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) between 2015 - 2018.

Cela faisait longtemps que nous souhaitions produire un épisode sur la grande diaspora malgache en France et son imaginaire politique riche des multiples luttes à l'encontre du colonialisme (et néocolonialisme) francais. Le voici ! Il ne s'agira peut-etre que du premier tant il y aurait à dire mais, en attendant, nous vous proposons cette première conversation avec Anja Rakotonirina dont les recherches portent précisement sur la manière dont cette histoire se raconte. Nous parlons de la diaspora, de la langue malgache, de Galiéni, de la grande insurrection de 1947 et celle, post-indépendance de 1972, et mobilisons également les imaginaires créés par Michèle Rakotoson et Marie Ranjanoro dans leurs romans.

Anja Rakotonirina est aujourd'hui en doctorat de science politique, et travaille actuellement sur une thèse intitulée : « Penser les indépendances : fabrication de l’histoire des luttes anticoloniales à Madagascar ». Elle a également mené des recherches sur la diaspora malgache en France, où elle a grandit et étudié. Ayant milité dans des collectifs organisés autour des questions raciales, ses recherches académiques et ses idéaux politiques se nourrissent : retracer les histoires de ses communautés et notamment de la diaspora afin de toujours mieux s'imaginer et se construire politiquement.

This conversation between Shivangi Mariam Raj and Hafsa Kanjwal focuses on the affect and mythologies deployed by India to condense Kashmir into a landscape of desire, into a territory of control, on slow and invisibilized forms of violence embedded in infrastructures of assimilation, and on the complex forms of statecrafting under successive client regimes that have contributed to the strengthening of India’s settler-colonial project in Kashmir today. We also discuss methods of resistance practiced by the peoples of Jammu and Kashmir and how they help us think about liberation in the global landscape of postcolonial colonialism.

Certes la diaspora kazakhe en France ne compte sans doute pas plus que quelques centaines de membres, celle-ci se joint néanmoins aux autres diasporas centre-asiatiques (kirghize, ouzbèke, tadjike et turkmène), et meme à d'autres ayant survécu au colonialisme de l'Empire russe, puis à celui de l'Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques dans une histoire contenant des moments communs (la Grande Révolte centre-asiatique de 1916 par exemple) mais aussi de nombreuses spécificités. Dans cet épisode, nous parlons avec Dilda Ramazan de l'importance de différencier Kazakh·e·s e Kazakhstanais·e·s, de leurs resistances anticoloniales, des structures ethnocentriques de l'Etat kazakhstanais, ainsi que de la vision centre-asiatique qu'elle propose en tant que curatrice. This conversation with Zoé Samudzi was recorded to operates as a complement of her text “Reparative Futurities: Thinking From the Ovaherero and Nama Colonial Genocide,” commissioned for and published in The Funambulist 30 (July-August 2020) REPARATIONS. Zoé begins by contextualizing the history of the first 20th century genocide, which was committed by the German settler colonial army against the Ovaherero and Nama nations in what is now Namibia. We then talks of the various forms of coalition settler colonial powers practice with each other, but also how the struggles against them can, in turn, form large solidarity fronts worldwide. Finally, Zoé describes the argument of her piece in The Funambulist 30 about the notion of reparative futurities.

Zoé Samudzi is a writer and doctoral candidate in Medical Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also a photographer and the archivist with MATATU Nomadic Cinema. Along with William C. Anderson, she is the co-author of As Black as Resistance: Finding the Conditions for Our Liberation (AK Press, 2018). She is currently a fellow with Political Research Associates.

Cette série podcast de The Funambulist en français est dédiée aux histoires et aux luttes des quartiers populaires de France et des colonies d’outremers. Des Minguettes de Vénissieux à la Cité Pierre Lenquette de Nouméa, des Bosquets de Montfermeil aux Flamants de Marseille, du Firminy Vert au Chaudron de Saint-Denis La Réunion, notre objectif est de prendre une modeste part à la transmission intergénérationnelle de l’histoire des luttes des quartiers. Afin de se faire, nous avons décidé de partir du particulier (un seul quartier par épisode) pour arriver au général dans les similitudes que ces conversations ne manqueront pas de générer. Comme pour tous nos autres projets, notre espoir est de cultiver les formes de solidarité entre initiatives politiques prises à l’encontre des structures racistes et coloniales.

Marwan Mohammed est sociologue en poste au CNRS. Il est l'auteur de La formation des bandes de jeunes : entre la famille, l’école et la rue (PUF, 2011), Islamophobie : comment les élites françaises fabriquent le problème musulman (avec Abdellali Hajjat, La Découverte, 2013) et Communautarisme? (avec Julien Talpin, PUF, 2018). Il a également dirigé la publication de Les bandes de jeunes : des blousons noirs à nos jours (avec Laurent Mucchielli, La Découverte, 2007) et Les sorties de délinquance : théories, méthodes, enquêtes (La Découverte, 2012).
