SCOTT JAY & THE MUSICLAND BIO
GENRE:				 Latin/Jazz/folk pop/world music
DESCRIPTION:	We are a latin/jazz/ folk/pop/ band from Lisburn and Ballymena in N.Ireland with sprinklings of eastern mysticism. Our songs have hooky pop melodies mixed with Latin/jazz percussion, world music flutes and harmonica, as well as searing and sexy sultry saxophone.  The acoustic guitar is influenced by latin/flamenco as well as eastern and folk music.
MEMBERS:	Scott Jay-acoustic guitar and vocals, Slawomir Cichy-drums percussion & wind instruments, Stephen Megrath saxophone.

Scott Jay has been on the open mic singer/songwriter scene round Belfast since 2009.'In this time I found my guitar style and sound by accident really' Scott says of this period. 'My Spanish/latin hand style guitar playing came from playing my old instrument of the bass guitar with my fingers'. 'This kind of translated itself on the acoustic guitar and realised that my oddity should be taken advantage of, so i looked to the style of Spain and their flamenco guitar playing as well as getting into Latin Jazz.
Since this time I knew that the rythm section i would be after for a band would be this style. This however didn’t come easy to find for Scott and took over a year for the vision to come to fruition. In a country known for staying in its musical comfort zone with punk and metal since the 70s, and until recently with Snow Patrol sound-alike indie bands, metal and punk bands that N.Ireland seems to have claimed as their own national genres over the years.  The search however finally became a reality through a chance internet search by Scott on the personnel’s for musicians Bandmix,  and found and messaged Slawomir Ciche a multi instrumental  musician, seeking like minded players in this style.' .' I messaged Savas in December 2012, along with links to my songs that I had recorded with a local producer.’ 'It wasn't until February that he accepted my facebook request and I then began hounding him with messages'. When we eventually got to jam, we hit it off immediately as people.  When I played the songs to him with just myself and an acoustic guitar, he was bowled over, and actually admitted that he liked my songs, but thought my recordings had too much in the way of computerised studio trickery and over production values, but loved what he had heard then live with me and a guitar'.' I would have been defensive and taken offence if it was a year before probably, as that is where my head was at the time of recording on my own, but I did agree with him, and was  wanting a stripped down live sound, so rehearsals began'. On the second rehearsal Savas’s fellow music school colleague Stephen Megrath joined rehearsals after they had met briefly at the first audition jam between Scott and Savas.' I heard Stephen playing sax at the end of the music workshop class at the very first meet between Savas and myself and thought, wow he sounds amazing, and I always wanted a jazz influenced sound, so when Savas mentioned to me about Stephen joining shortly after, it took it took me maybe a couple of seconds to give him my answer'. 2 then became 3, and Stephen’s playing was the icing on the musical cake.' Stephen just knew exactly what to play and when on the sax and through chats with me about jazz proved he was well adept musically and tuned right into my song-writing style, feeding the songs with emotion and feeling’. We jazz spirits had now found one another, and our unique band line up was now complete!


The hard hitting Rhythm & Blues bastards of Belfast THE GROUNDLINGS have been leaving audiences spinning to their primitive sounds since September 2012. The 3 piece have so far been rocking out in some of Belfast's finest live music haunts such as Voodoo, The Black Box and The Menagerie, as well as gigs in towns and cities across Ireland, and plans are afoot to take the to road with their heady mix of rock n roll- fresh rhythm n blues songs cut with psychedelic undertones, dirty funk and garage punk. 

The Groundlings debut album, recorded at RInky Dink Studios, is due for release later this year.
