Argumentant des influences aussi sombres qu’efficaces, le producteur grenoblois a imposé sa techno dans les années 90, aux côtés notamment de Miss Kittin, avant d'instiguer le mouvement électro-clash en Allemagne. Electron libre, le producteur a su traverser les époques pour élaborer un style techno propre et personnel. A travers ce nouveau projet, Michel Amato aka The Hacker renoue avec ses racines et ses premières amours, la new wave, la techno sombre et puissante aux accents hardcore. Signé sur une compilation du label new-yorkais, Minimal Wave, dirigé par Veronica Vasicka, cette nouvelle facette de The Hacker est une véritable introspection.

Keluar's limited run 'Panguna' EP is a darkness-drenched dream with Lamar's productions backed by soothing yet haunting vocals from Zanias. The title track is huge but The Hacker's remix, well that's a different level.

DJ Hell is just about to release his fifth studio album 'ZUKUNFTSMUSIK' and on December 24 you can look forward to a very deep and dark Christmas Eve as he drops the first single from the LP.

'I Want You' is an 11-minute epic that trembles with eerie fervour and the remix, well that gives it an even more menacing makeover. The Hacker is another undisputed pioneer and his remix is exactly what you'd expect from the hallowed Frenchman.

Premiere: DJ Hell 'I Want You' (The Hacker Remix)

Like many of us, Brooklyn-based producer Gunnar Haslam has long been drawn to acid. Following two releases on The Bunker New York alongside Tin Man as a part of their improvisational Romans project, Gunnar returns with “Scale No Flam”, his first 12” single for the label. Scale No Flam is both a love letter and a demonstration of why he can’t stop getting lost in the sound. According to Gunnar, “acid is just one of those things that creeps into your life and consumes everything around you - a psychedelic and textural approach to music that is simultaneously intense and smooth.” While acid has come to be defined by the Roland 808 and the 303, the hardware alone can’t define the feeling, and Gunnar believes “You don't need a 303 to make acid, you just need an open ear and an open mind.” 

After getting Mike Servito, Justin Cudmore, Derek Plaslaiko, and Bryan Kasenic all running to the booth to see what the fuck was playing at various times when Gunnar was dropping the unreleased “Scale No Flam” in his DJ sets throughout 2016, we had no choice but to press it to vinyl. Gunnar tells us he was playing around with trying to replicate the bass line of Heaven 17’s 1982 classic ‘Let Me Go’ when “things kinda mutated.” The A side is completely Gunnar’s own with a dominating acid line providing the backbone to a flangey work-out that is simultaneously totally crazy and totally logical. On the B side, fellow Brooklynites and co-members of the Hot Mix DJ crew, Mike Servito and Justin Cudmore add their perspective with a remix that draws out the hidden angular funk.

Detroit electro wizard DJ Stingray has been tapped for the latest installment of Tresor's lauded 'Kern' mix series, and while the session features tracks from AFX, Gesloten Cirkel, Silent Servant and, of course, Drexciya, it also includes this new tune by NRSB-11, a collaboration between DJ Stingray and the enigmatic Gerald Donald. 'Kern Vol. 4' drops on July 7, but ahead of its release we debuted the crunchily pulsing "Nationalised" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

Michel Amato, aka The Hacker, has a long and varied career in music. From his early begins in a new wave band to his work with Miss Kitten and releases on International Deejays Gigolos, and creating the electro-clash craze, he's had a far reaching influence on the electronic music world.

In 2015, Michel began a new project called Amato. Influenced by early EBM, German techno and new wave, he began producing tracks under his new moniker. The first one to be released, called Physique, came out on the Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax Tracks Volume One EP and was a dancefloor success. His debut solo EP entitled Le Desordre et La Nuit was released last year, integrating his love of the new wave to form four EBM tinged techno funk hits.

We are honored to announce the latest album from Michel Amato aka The Hacker, ‘Le Théâtre des Opérations’. Michel began making music in 1989 a the age of 17 in Grenoble, France. He grew up listening to New Wave bands like Duran Duran, The Cure and Depeche Mode as well as the darker side of electro Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire and D.A.F. In 1990s he released a series of 12” singles and an album of cold, calculating and relentless techno. In 1997 he teamed up with Caroline Herve aka Miss Kittin and to release landmark singles and albums that effortlessly channeled the carefree spirit of 80s electro pop (of which we released an EP of lost demos back in 2015). Michel’s new live project sees the enigmatic artist go back to his roots, performing a 100% analogue set directly inspired by his first true loves of New Wave and dark, powerful techno.


‘Le Théâtre des Opérations’ features 8 new tracks spread evenly across 2x12”s cut at 45rpm for maximum sound quality and DJ utility. The title comes from a metaphysical journal by French-born Canadian science fiction writer Maurice G Dantec. Passionate about avant-garde techno, The Hacker has taken his influences and crafted a potent homage to the power of the synthesizer. Songs veer from gritty, raw EBM to dark, subterranean electro, effortlessly channeling the strains of the Michel’s musical DNA: Front 242, Jeff Mills, Dopplereffekt, Drexciya. The only vocal track features an appearance by longtime friend and collaborator Miss Kittin, named “Time X” after the French science fiction television series Temps X. All songs have been mastered and lacquer cut by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Cover artwork features a collage by London-based artist Anthony Gerace, and each copy includes a postcard featuring a photo of a young Michel from 1989.
