In episode 1, we begin with an introduction to this podcast, followed by a brief overview of what we’ve come to know about early human migration and settlement in the region that will eventually become China. Finally, we’ll delve into the mythological origin story that purports to tell of the three divine Sovereigns who would create and then rule over the Han people.

Bookmakers #24 - L'autrice du mois : Céline Minard Née à Rouen en 1969, Céline Minard a étudié la philosophie et travaillé en librairie avant d’arpenter, dès 2004, les sentiers les plus aventureux de la fiction francophone contemporaine. Cette fine lectrice du « Quichotte » est révélée par la critique avec « Le Dernier Monde », monologue métaphysique et burlesque de l’ultime habitant de la Terre (Denoël, 2007). Depuis, elle honore le crédo d’une « littérature transgenre », avec notamment « Bastard Battle », bataille médiévale teintée de manga (mention spéciale du prix Wepler, Léo Scheer, 2008), le western « Faillir être flingué » (prix du Livre Inter, vendu à 100 000 exemplaires, Rivages, 2014) ou les nouvelles S.-F. de « Plasmas » (grand prix de l’Imaginaire, Rivages, 2022). Céline Minard vit et écrit aujourd’hui dans le massif des Corbières.  Céline Minard (1/3) Dans « So long, Luise » (Rivages, 2011), Céline Minard rédige le testament d’une écrivaine qui ne jure que par « la marche, la marche, le mouvement ». Son héroïne s’étonne que des journalistes « de plus en plus savants et retors » viennent tenter de lui tirer les vers du nez à propos de sa prose, sa ponctuation, et tout ce qu’elle nomme « ses ustensiles de cuisine ». Elle note pour la postérité les trois questions les plus paresseuses de n’importe quelle interview littéraire : « 1°) Vous vous documentez beaucoup ? 2°) C’est autobiographique ? 3°) Vous avez mis longtemps à l’écrire ? »  Nous avons donc redoublé de souplesse à l’heure d’avancer en terrain Minard. « J’adore l’exigence de la narration, la solidité qu’elle requiert. C’est le monde des possibles, la permission absolue. Une expérience de liberté, une vie de plus, dérobée. On est tous des menteurs, des imposteurs, des gosses ébahis avec des yeux comme des soucoupes ! », dit avec entrain celle dont l’œuvre – née d’un accident de rollers – démarre avec le très confidentiel « R. » (Comp’Act, 2004), journal des rêveries d’un promeneur pas tout à fait solitaire, qui traverse les Alpes dans les pas de Jean-Jacques Rousseau.  Suivra une douzaine d’ouvrages souvent exigeants, oui, mais drôles, et rigoureusement stimulants sur le plan conceptuel. Un univers hétéroclite, peuplé de braqueuses excentriques, de papesse vengeresse, ou de chevaux génétiquement modifiés. Mais comment tout a commencé pour cette disciple en audace de François Villon ou de l’Allemand Arno Schmidt ? Comment s'inspire-t-elle de « la rue, la lumière sur une feuille ou dans un bol de thé, et les trente-six mille formes du vivant » ? Pour le savoir, tous et toutes en rando derrière Céline Minard !

A mesmerizing mixtape of lo-fi shortwave radio transmissions arrived in our mailbox today from the Italian tape label Artetetra. And it’s a doozy! Produced exclusively for Radio is a Foreign Country, Italian scavengers of obscure exotica, Luigi Monteanni and Matteo Pennesi, explore the surreal world of shortwave radio.
 
“As a mix of functional signals and sounds, incomprehensible codes and intrusive skits, which rely entirely on the technical efficiency and power of the machine as a catalyst, not to mention the capacity and experience of the listener-user to tune into different frequencies, shortwave radio is a continuous adventure into undisclosed territories of sound that literally becomes, at any given moment, an unrevealed foreign country.

Historically, shortwave radios have been used mostly for communication, commercials, propaganda and illegal broadcasting, which is often related to political needs that require evading the normal laws of censorship and intellectual property. Unable to listen uninterrupted, one must hunt continuously for tunes, acrobatically zapping through jungles of white noise and wastelands of abandoned frequencies. Shortwave radio is therefore a kind of shadow box containing part of our sonorous heritage in the form of haunting and recurring uchronia, where different geographies, eras, and technologies fuse in a polymorphic structure of displaced signals and sounds – for example, Guglielmo Marconi and the Cape Verde islands, jungle from the 90s and Latin radio plays from the 70s. If there is anything that illustrates Artetetra's concept of Quinto Mondo, it is without a doubt shortwave radio.”
