THE CAROUSEL

When I was just a little boy, no more than a tot
My mother took me down to Coney Island
She told me:
“Get on the carousel, find yourself a horse

The music began and the horses went around
Oh, that’s when mummy dearest disappeared into the crowd
High up on my horse, my heart began to race
With the stupidest smile imaginable plastered to my face

Never, no never, did I see my mum again
I stayed on the carousel until the age of ten
A delightful transformation had begun inside my head
In the place of Coney Island was a cabaret instead

The music began and the horses went around
Year after year I went up and I went down
Smiling to myself at the center of the world
I imagined I was riding on the backs of beautiful girls!

Well, she fell into a quandary when it started to snow
‘Cause she didn’t have a penny and she'd run out of coal
She took the matter to the Madame at the local hotel
Who was pleased to introduce her to the clientele

She was unpretentious

She was conscientious

She was getting anxious
But in a matter of time

She had a big fat pocket of coal
