In 1890, describing the birth experience, William James said, "The baby, assailed by eyes, ears, nose, skin, and entrails at once, feels it all as one great blooming buzzing confusion." Is that a poetic or scientific observation? 

Can a newborn baby feel anything, in the sense of being aware of his emotions? Does he "know" that a light is shining in his eyes, or is his reflex blink his sole reaction? So much newborn response is automatic that it is easy for observers to believe that all newborn response is automatic; that the baby, though animate, is psychologically a nonentity"
