a studio and you get an idea what this Berlin based live duo sounds like.
In complex arrangements they create funky state-of-the-art house music,
in a class all its own.

Up next on Soul Clap Records, the label that brought you the funk and all that stomping to move your trunk, we're smoothing it out with something truly deep. Presenting the break out debut of talented young David Marston. His roots reach back to his city of birth, Chicago, then spread to the island of Jamaica, where he grew up fascinated with the new world of sound around him. Early guitar training and eclectic musical influences exposed him to classic rock, the blues, jazz, reggae and dub; inexorably the emotive power of music took its hold on him. Now he represents the city of Philadelphia and strives to make music that combines varied, contrasting, and diverse musical elements in a manner that is both intricate and elegant. 

We originally took notice of David a couple years back when he sent us "Gruv", a deep saxophone driven bomb that became the A side of the Jamaicalia EP. Then it took over a year for him to feel ready with his next body of music, which included the future Deep 4 Life anthem "I Don't Want", "My Love Will Be Crying" and "Trust Me". For this EP we also have the world premier of Gemini Love aka Crew Love's three headed and two faced monster, Eli Goldstein, Gadi Mizrahi and Nick Monaco, who have gotten together to present a punky, funky remix of "I Don't Want". 

About his EP, titled Jamaicalia, in David's words: 
"Jamaicalia is a marriage of Jamaica and Tropicalia. I first encountered the term Tropicalia as the caption of a photograph taken in Jamaica. Intrigued, I discovered that Tropicalia was an avant-garde art movement that was started in the 1960s in Brazil. The movement came to exemplify cultural hybridity. It encouraged cultural syncretism: the merging of various and divergent artistic influences with the purpose of creating something novel and powerful. I am fascinated by Brazilian music, and the songs that are featured on this EP undoubtedly have strong Brazilian influences. My music, to a great extent, is the result of fusion; it is a creolized music, a pastiche of diverse styles. While my music is not typically Jamaican, Jamaican culture has had a significant influence on my approach to music creation. For me, Jamaicalia is an apt title for this body of music, because it embodies an experimental amalgam of world and dance musical elements."

It’s been a minute since I last served up a batch of raw breakbeats, but the energy at this year’s IBE event in Holland lit that fire again. A Side Breaks Vol. 2 is a tribute to the global dance community — a selection of B-boy and B-girl–friendly breaks, crafted for cyphers, sessions, battles, and anyone who lives for that moment when the beat drops and your body just moves.
For those who don’t know: B-boy/B-girl breaks are the foundation of breakin’ culture. They’re the drum-heavy, groove-driven sections of funk, soul, and rare groove records that DJs isolate, loop, and extend to create that high-energy pocket dancers feed off. These breaks drive footwork, freezes, power moves, and flow — they’re the heartbeat of the dance.

With Vol. 2, I dug back into some older nuggets, revisiting sounds that shaped generations of breakers. And trust, there’s much more on the way — deeper cuts, fresh flips, and more gems for the floor.

Let’s get back to the essence.

Oma Nata is a mysterious Portuguese kid living in Hamburg. After crossing boundaries in several genres in other musical projects he started Oma Nata to explore a more moody, vibrant and exotic sound. The influences in these three tunes on this EP span from Latin American to West African jazz, blended perfectly with exceptional classic House beat-making, in such way that it doesn't simply come across like patchwork, but a homogenous flow of moody, soulful music. "Baiana" has Cape Verde and Brazil mixed in an unexpected ethereal dance-floor burner that finds its beauty in apparent simplicity. "El Seguidor" is a perfect example of the best way to carefully mix Jazz, South American fusion and House music without sacrificing any of each influence's integrity. We can surely recommend this track even for the stiffest hips. "Sozinho" takes Hamburg to Rio's Carnaval with its irresistible deep Samba influenced beats. Instant summer anywhere!

@jkriv snubs his usual disco flavours for a beautiful piano-led musing, with grainy female jazz vocals that combines the woozy Groove Armada feel and the moody depths of Portishead. Out on @razor-n-tape.
