Heavyweight Gambit, Nol Holds Barred' is the 11th compilation coming out on the Paris DJs label, and the second one digging into Funk & Soul music for the Paris DJs Soundsystem crew. A lot of tracks landed in the label's mailbox (thanks to everyone who participated!), choices had to be made, and until the last minute it was tough decisions. After many delays in adjusments and fine-tuning of this selection, this new compilations finally out, right on for Halloween 2015! The artwork depicts a stoned and scary wrestler, doesn't it? As suggested by this new, fantastic piece of visual art from French illustrator Ben Hito, the selection gathers psychedelic funk, soul for freaks, foot stomping beats, heavyweight breaks, thrilling grooves, hip hop coolness, fuzzy sounds and more...

Some of the bands/artists were already featured on Paris DJs finest selections, from compilations to mixes, reviews or remixes. Our readers and listeners should indeed start to get excited just hearing the names Connie Price and the Keystones, Breakdown Brass, Q.A.S.B., The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, STEPAK-TAKRAW, Grant Phabao, RacecaR, The Echocentrics or J. Whitefield. All people with a heavy sense of classicism in their funky productions, with sound aesthetics close to ours, whom we're so proud to feature here. The ever-exanding family from the Paris DJs universe has answered our call once again, sending a whole bunch of new, often unreleased, killer tunes, and it feels GOOD.

The "discoveries" — at least for us — are also a delight, don' let us fool you. It was hard to pick a tune between the 3 San Fernando, CA funk unit Soul Scratch sent. Great things to come from them soon for sure! East Oakland-based Soul-Hop singer Baby Jaymes does sound quite close to Michael Jackson. His cover of 50 Cent released last year on a limited 45 is a scorcher and we hope to start collaborating with him as soon as possible. It would be very interesting to hear him sing on some reggae production from Grant Phabao…. Alex Puddu is a Copenhagen-based Italian producer we had on our radar for some time now. His Soultiger project is a treat, and from the album released earlier this year was extracted for a 45 release an original composition featuring the legendary Joe Bataan on vocals. It took us some convincing, but we couldn't pass on getting this track in here. The tune is very addictive, and Mr. Bataan's voice so unique, so purely soulful! There's also Italian soundtrackish funk from La Batteria, French P-Funk band Horndogz featuring Parliament/Funkadelic/Drugs singer Clip Payne, and we close this new chapter feets in the sand, with a relaxing piece of Samba Funk from Dambô & Pauliño Nunes in Recife, Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. This music is good for you.

For its third release, Chuwanaga goes back to the past with the reissue of “(Where Is The) Sunshine” by Kalima, a really rare 7” originally released in 1981 and produced in Baltimore (Maryland) by African-American pianist and producer Derrick Amin. Part I on the A side and part II on the B side form a real journey, a beauty in its own style fusing jazz, soul and spirituality as well as political values.

Back in the mid seventies Derrick Amin brought together young and talented musicians from his African-American Muslim community in Baltimore. He tells us: “all black music in America is a response to racism and slavery” and “(Where Is The) Sunshine” was their own answer, “a plaintiff query of one immerse in darkness. The darkness of lies, lies that deny the humanity, justice, and equality of people. It’s the impetus of this song”. He adds: “Kalima means « Word » or « Langage » in Arabic. The name was inspired by a quote from Imam W.D. Mohammad (the late Muslim American leader and erstwhile successor to Nation of Islam founder, Elijah Muhammad) who once said: “Words make people””.

With its splendid vocal parts - thanks to lead vocalist Sabreen Shareef, a unique major-to-minor chord progression, subtil synthetiser melodies in the chorus and amazing electric piano and sax solos, it really is a very special release. It’s been discovered in a @Motor Motor City Drum Ensemble jazz set with Gilles Peterson at the JAW Family Reunion in Berlin back in 2016 where he played it as the closing track of a wonderful musical journey through black music – which was the right occasion for a classic Gilles rewind and the occasion of a shared epiphany. Still, one must not forget its yet poetic still political message now shared once again with the world. The question asked by Kalima sadly still remains as relevant in 2018: Where is the sunshine ?

Let’s take this thing it higher. 

Anyone familiar with the Pimps of Joytime live experience knows the feeling—it’s that moment when a deep bluesy groove morphs into a full-on EDM explosion, or the sensation when the wide-eyed audience collectively elevates in sync with the band’s irresistible energy.

On Jukestone Paradise, the Pimps of Joytime raise the bar with swagger to spare, crafting ten cohesive songs that ring out like the soundtrack for a ride through the diverse Brooklyn neighborhood where their sound materialized.  Pulling from lead guitarist and singer Brian J’s deep discography of influences, the creation of Jukestone Paradise began a decade ago, when he penned anthems like “Sky” and “Freedom Dancer,” all the way up to the album’s studio recording sessions.

You might accurately call the Pimps of Joytime a ‘post-genre’ band; they’re a group whose sound—even within a single song—mirrors the diversity of our era’s musical tastes. “It’s a sonic tapestry that’s representative of this time and place that we live in,” says Brian J. 

That’s where the Pimps excel, by mashing up ‘70s funk tones with modern dance beats, mixed with original samples creating their mosaic sound. For listeners weary of today’s DJ culture but eager to dance with abandon, the Pimps of Joytime are the antidote. 

“At our core, the Pimps of Joytime are not just dance music,” says Brian J of the band’s three-part harmony attack. “My first vocal mentor was a doo-wop singer, so I have a long-time love affair with vocal harmonies.”

With the release of Jukestone Paradise, the band makes official their solid touring lineup, featuring dual female vocalists and percussionists Mayteana Morales and Cole WilliamsX. And they’re hitting the road hard, continuing a constant touring schedule that’s already left prominent sets at festivals like Voodoo, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo and High Sierra in their wake.

Behind the frontlines are bassist/keyboardist David Bailis and drummer John Staten, forming the rhythmic backbone of the Pimps’ audible collage. And for Jukestone Paradise, they called in a few friends to lend their talents, including Ivan Neville, who lends New Orleans flavor to “Sky,” and Rubblebucket’s Alex Toth, who co-wrote the quirky and infectious “Dance Cardia.” 

Just as Brooklyn has changed since the Pimps started, so has the band’s sound. But as Williamsburg gentrifies, the Pimps of Joytime’s diverse evolution keeps the neighborhood’s spirit alive. That spirit goes into the Pimps’ pot, over a soulful roux of rhythm and groove.
