Over the past eight years, Ikebe Shakedown has cemented a reputation as one of the boldest, most creative acts in the Brooklyn instrumental scene. Combining cinematic soul, Afro–funk, deep disco, and an irrepressible groove, Ikebe has forged a style all its own. Each song is anchored in the deep-pocketed pulse of its four-man rhythm section (Barnaby Alter, drums; Dave Bourla, percussion; Vince Chiarito, bass; Robin Schmidt, guitar) and driven by one of the tightest horn trios on the East Coast (Mike Buckley, tenor/baritone sax; Jason Colby, trumpet; Nadav Nirenberg, trombone), with tunes ranging from dance-foor burners to lush, captivating scores.

The band frst came on the scene with 2009’s debut EP, Hard Steppin’, from Colemine Records.  Praised by WNYC’s Soundcheck as “the perfect soundtrack for the unwritten Tarantino movie of your imagination,” the five–song release led to tours up and down both coasts and paved the way for Ikebe Shakedown’s first full-length LP on Ubiquity Records in 2011. Recorded at Killion Sound in L.A. with Orgone’s Sergio Rios and Dunham Studios in Brooklyn with noted producer Tom Brenneck, this self-titled album featured 14 blistering tracks that Okayplayer called, “an adventurous trip through time” and “one of the best releases of the year.” Having toured the record throughout the U.S. and Canada, Ikebe returned to the studio in 2014 for their follow up album for Ubiquity, Stone by Stone.  Recorded at Daptone Studios, the 10–song set let the band become more adventurous than ever before, weaving psychedelic textures and raw soul into powerful compositions, or as Wax Poetics called it, “a greasy and sometimes trippy funk world.”

Now, after hitting major jazz festivals, opening on extended runs for stars like Lee Fields, and touring with acts like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires, and the Monophonics, the seven members of Ikebe Shakedown are poised for their next big release in 2016. The band’s style has continued to evolve, with material that transports listeners beyond their living rooms and builds on the success that has led to musical features in series such as Eastbound and Down, movies like Our Brand is Crisis, and commercials for brands including Mini Cooper, Van’s Off the Wall, and Surfline. The songs are at once richly familiar and incredibly fresh, paying homage to classic influences while pushing a brand new sound. Defying genre or classification, this album proves Ikebe Shakedown is helping define the next bold wave in instrumental music.

Anyone familiar with the Pimps of Joytime live experience knows the feeling—it’s that moment when a deep bluesy groove morphs into a full-on EDM explosion, or the sensation when the wide-eyed audience collectively elevates in sync with the band’s irresistible energy.

On Jukestone Paradise, the Pimps of Joytime raise the bar with swagger to spare, crafting ten cohesive songs that ring out like the soundtrack for a ride through the diverse Brooklyn neighborhood where their sound materialized.  Pulling from lead guitarist and singer Brian J’s deep discography of influences, the creation of Jukestone Paradise began a decade ago, when he penned anthems like “Sky” and “Freedom Dancer,” all the way up to the album’s studio recording sessions.

You might accurately call the Pimps of Joytime a ‘post-genre’ band; they’re a group whose sound—even within a single song—mirrors the diversity of our era’s musical tastes. “It’s a sonic tapestry that’s representative of this time and place that we live in,” says Brian J. 

That’s where the Pimps excel, by mashing up ‘70s funk tones with modern dance beats, mixed with original samples creating their mosaic sound. For listeners weary of today’s DJ culture but eager to dance with abandon, the Pimps of Joytime are the antidote. 

“At our core, the Pimps of Joytime are not just dance music,” says Brian J of the band’s three-part harmony attack. “My first vocal mentor was a doo-wop singer, so I have a long-time love affair with vocal harmonies.”

With the release of Jukestone Paradise, the band makes official their solid touring lineup, featuring dual female vocalists and percussionists Mayteana Morales and Cole WilliamsX. And they’re hitting the road hard, continuing a constant touring schedule that’s already left prominent sets at festivals like Voodoo, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo and High Sierra in their wake.

Behind the frontlines are bassist/keyboardist David Bailis and drummer John Staten, forming the rhythmic backbone of the Pimps’ audible collage. And for Jukestone Paradise, they called in a few friends to lend their talents, including Ivan Neville, who lends New Orleans flavor to “Sky,” and Rubblebucket’s Alex Toth, who co-wrote the quirky and infectious “Dance Cardia.” 

Just as Brooklyn has changed since the Pimps started, so has the band’s sound. But as Williamsburg gentrifies, the Pimps of Joytime’s diverse evolution keeps the neighborhood’s spirit alive. That spirit goes into the Pimps’ pot, over a soulful roux of rhythm and groove.
