In June 2023, I came across the ShaiiValley YouTube video essay about the unknown song "Everyone Knows That / Ulterior Motives." Only a seventeen second clip is known to exist, uploaded by mysterious internet user carl92 to watzatsong.com in 2021. Instantly I was intrigued.

With 1980s synthpop being one of my favorite genres, I thought it may be fun to create my own full reconstruction of the song, choosing to interpret the seventeen seconds as the end of a pre-chorus and the start of a chorus.

Later that same day, I uploaded a demo of my own version of "Ulterior Motives" to YouTube. It now has over 125,000 views. 

To show my appreciation for all the support I have received from the Lost Media community, and to expand the already-fascinating story of "Ulterior Motives," I have released an extended play with a fully fleshed-out version of my reconstruction, as well as some variations.

I have also written a B-Side called "Climbin' Out," which I wrote to tell what I interpret as the sequel to the "Ulterior Motives" Narrator's story.

Unrealistic Expectations is an album that blends elements of weirdcore, dreamcore, breakcore, synthwave, vaporwave, and ambient music together to create an uneasy, melancholic, and liminal 17-minute analog-horror fever dream. Starting as an experiment on how sleep deprivation influenced the music I made, I've been making songs for this album as a little side project over the last year. It makes me very pleased to have finally finished it. It's some of my most experimental work yet, but pushing the boundaries of what I enjoy making (and music in general) was very exciting.

I stumbled upon everyone's new favourite Lostwave song a few weeks ago and then stumbled upon this kickass cover by Matthew Sykes, and after listening to it on loop for a little while I decided "fuck it, let's make a cover of this!"
