High Hoops 039 - DJ Having Sex

Manchester-based collective All Hands on Deck have been on our radar for a little while, but it wasn't until this summer that we were introduced to one of the minds behind it, Abena. It was her stream for We Out Here that had us hooked; a mind-bending mix of energetic electronics that saw her dropping in edits from Panic At The Disco and Bloc Party in the most surprising, yet effortless fashion.

For those that aren't au fait with All Hands on Deck's movements, they are a DJ collective that consists of, and supports, people who identify as women, non-binary and trans, by running a series of open deck parties and DJ workshops in the city, which have been replaced by an online mix series during this year's COVID restrictions.

With the memory of Abena's stream still ringing loudly in our ears, we were eager to see what she would bring to the table for her Shine A Light On mix, and the result is suitably gripping, moving through moody, chuggy cuts that perfectly soundtrack the darkening days...

It’s high time for a new Post Bar Recording. This one is from the Fusion mes couilles night back in December 2019. This party rocking, pant shaking recording captures the essence of the night perfectly: fast paced (and often broken) techno jams, wonked out 2 step, UK funky riddim operations, Jungle massif, footwork and juke-y fuckabouts + more. Talking about hybrid strategies, eh. Just when you think they lowered the energy for good, they blow that shit right back up again. It’s just crazy, okay?

Hypnotic Groove Mix #346 - Significant Other

Stepping up for an exciting entry in the Rhythmic Culture podcast series this week is Noods Radio and Psychotherapy Sessions resident k means. Taking her name from an algorithm that she used when writing a music recommendation system, k means has a soft spot for the darker and weirder facets of music. The Stockholm-born, London-based DJ, who got into electronic music through video games, forms one half of Avant Garbage with DJ ojo, whose show on Netil Radio explores the stranger margins of electronic music, and with Sarjan Paul she runs grassroots London club night Expansion Pak, with a commitment to booking under-the-radar talent.

In her mix she serves up all sorts of mind bending treats ranging from haunting and hypnotic sounds to sweaty party steppers and back to window-shaking-basslines, making it an hour long musical ping-pong that makes you want to come back for more.
