@alessandro-adriani-mnq is a lot of things – producer, DJ, live performer and label owner – but above all he is a tireless music researcher. He is also already familiar to our audience, to have been invited in 2019 by the Prishtina based @servisorg.

Adriani is distinctively drawn towards the dark and obscure, and you can hear this approach amongst the long, drawn-out mixes of his similarly eclectic DJ sets. Alessandro has contributed outstanding mixes for Resident Advisor, FACT, Crack Magazine, Bleep, Cxema and Dekmantel. On the festival circuit he’s made appearances at Dekmantel, ADE, Dimensions, Neopop, Positive Education, Signal and more, together with his bi-monthly dates at Berghain and Panorama Bar, a residency he’s held since early 2016.

 Adriani’s obsession has naturally shaped his other musical endeavors, not least Mannequin Records, the label he established over than a decade ago, voted label of the month by Resident Advisor in 2017. Over the years, the imprint has won praise from buyers and critics alike for its open-minded blend of on-point reissues, archival collections and fresh productions. The intriguing, leftfield mixture of material on offer – think techno, electro, cold wave, industrial, EBM, minimal synth, and more – is naturally a reflection of Adriani’s wide-ranging and off-kilter tastes (as you’d discover if you had a quick flick through his vast and growing record collection).  

 As a producer, Adriani’s output naturally draws on these inspirations, but also reflects his obsession with electronic hardware. Under his own name Adriani has built a reputation for delivering heavy, angular and forthright club cuts for such celebrated labels as Stroboscopic Artefacts, Jealous God, Pinkman and - of course - Mannequin Records.

Off The Record Mix Series 28: Athens Of The North

Fabrizio Mammarella has been a key figure in putting contemporary Italian dance music on the global map. The DJ, producer and label owner, who splits his time between his hometown of Chieti and Berlin, honours Italy's rich musical past whilst keeping both eyes firmly fixed on the future. 

Alongside fellow Italian Franz Scala, he's the mind behind Slow Motion Records and its little sister imprint Wrong Era who, for nearly two decades, have peddled a sound they term 'Italian Dance Wave', which draws on heritage sounds like Italo Disco, Proto and Progressive House in a fresh context.

Through the labels he's helped provide a platform to a new crop of contemporary Italian producers, and unsurprisingly this singular style has captured the attention of artists across the world, who are now dabbling in this Italian-influenced sound. Since it's inception in 2005 it's been a home to Italian-hailing producers like dj rocca, System Olympia and Discodromo, as well as artists from all over including Adrian Marth, Rambal Cochet and Pardon Moi.

Inevitably Fabrizio's own music is indebted to these Italian sounds too. Self-described as 'music for dancefloors made with old synthesizers, drum machines and a computer' — a meeting of the old and the new — as well as releasing these sonics on his own imprint, he's made homes at an impressive string of labels like DFA, Permanent Vacation, Correspondant, Les Disques De La Mort and Future Boogie.

We handed the reigns over to him for today's mix. It's a true reflection of what he's all about: futuristic, synth-driven dance music at its finest.

Based in Berlin, Skelesys is a versatile, ever-evolving and particularly cutting-edge artist. He’s a producer, DJ and live act with a strong musical background inspired by Hard Rock, Post-Punk, Synth Pop, science fiction and horror movies.
His sound could be defined as haunted and effective, the result of a delicate and neat mixture of marked basses and guitar riffs always accompanied by thriller melodies and subtle grooves surrounded by darkness with a stripped down futuristic vibe.
Skelesys produces and performs a mixture of post-punk, italo-dark wave and EBM with a touch of rock n roll.
He has released on a handful of well respected labels such as Eskimo Recordings, Ombra INTL, Oraculo Records and Snap Crackle & Pop to name a few.
He is primarily a live artist, incorporating his guitar with electronics and vocals on stage. Also DJing all things under the umbrella of 80s influenced dark club sound.
His music has been supported by artists like Curses, Jennifer Cardini, Perel, Kris Baha, Local Suicide, The Brvtalist, Justin Strauss, Reka to name a few.
His latest work is "Epsilon", a four track EP released both digital and physical via Oraculo Records.

AJJA S.F. LEU is an eclectic and multi-talented Swiss artist who channels his creativity through parallel careers as musician/producer/dj, Peak Records label manager, graphic artist and tattoo artist. 

Born in London in 1975, AJJA grew up roaming the planet with his world-renowned family of tattoo-artists and travellers. Wandering across the world and bathed in various artistic scenes, he was provided with a constant creative drive. 

He started playing guitar when he was nine years old, and having been reared in a rock’n’roll and funk atmosphere, he first concentrated on these musical styles. By his mid-teens, he had composed, produced and recorded over one hundred original songs. He performed with a number of live bands in different countries and continued to create music and release rock albums for another decade. During this time, he also picked up the family trade and started tattooing alongside his parents and older brother Filip Leu. 

At the end of the nineties, his interest gradually shifted towards electronic music, causing him to explore new digital horizons. In 2002, AJJA and musician friends Master Margherita, Dymons and Flooting Grooves created The Peaking Goddess Collective, a chill & psytrance band that fuses live instruments and digital technology. After performing in many parties and festivals and releasing tracks on many compilations, their debut album “Organika” was released on Peak Records in August 2007. 

In the summer of 2003, AJJA, in collaboration with his partner, visual artist Tanina Munchkina and musicians Dj Gaspard and Master Margherita, founded the psychedelic trance label Peak Records. In only four years, the label has gained respect and a solid reputation in the psytrance scene, releasing many quality night-time and chill albums and compilations. The same year saw the birth of Yab Yum, the fully digital project shared by AJJA and Dj Gaspard. They have since released numerous tracks on world-renowned labels, and their debut album “Nocturnal Emissions”, released on Peak Records in December 2006, has been widely praised in the international psytrance scene. They have performed with growing success worldwide from Japan to the United States. 

In 2005, AJJA started a solo project under his own name. This digital live-act is primarily 144bpm-based, focusing on groovy, non-cheesy, psychedelic trance that could be played in the morning or in the middle of the night. Since then, AJJA has performed in numerous parties and festivals including the Soulclipse, Life, Gaian Mind, Wickerman, World People, Forgotten Ritual and Waveform Project festivals. His much appreciated live sets have already rocked & grooved dancefloors in Japan, The United States, Canada, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland and Turkey. In the coming months, AJJA will be performing both his new material and with Yab Yum in parties around the planet, including the famous Universo Paralello in Brazil. A mini-tour in Japan is planned for spring 2008. 

In 2007, AJJA released his first solo night-time track on Moonloop Records. This fall, he will have two more releases on the upcoming Peak Records compilation “Peak-a-Doodle-Doo” and on Northern Psylights Records. His debut album “PSYCHOGENICA” will be released in November 2007, on the newborn Irish label Syncronize Records. Not satisfied with so much activity, Ajja also composes music for theater plays, designs Peak Records covers with his partner Tanina Munchkina, and works as a tattoo artist in his family’s shop in Lausanne, Switzerland.

This month we are joined by to of our favourite party starters Local Suicide. Munich-born Brax Moody and Thessaloniki native Vamparela have collaborated together since 2009. Their scope is wide-ranging and have collaborated on projects ranging from DJ sets to bands, remixes and music production. These two were also the driving forces behind the now-infamous T.O.F.U (Too Old For Understatement).  Their DJ career has carried them to all four corners of the world. You can rest assured that this pair are at the very peak of their game. 

Their sound is a wild fusion of new wave, acid, slow techno, EBM and post-disco.   This power couple has been whipping up a collaborative storm with the likes of  Rodion, Mijo, Theus Mago Alejandro Paz and Curses! One of the nicest guys in the scene Luca Venezia aka @CursesForever is known for his unique blends of New Wave and Post-Punk with his ghostly vocals and guitars, punctuated with flashes of 80's EBM and New Beat. Whether it's performing live at the late Andrew Weatherall's Convenanza Festival, DJng in the main room at Circoloco DC-10 or indeed his own productions which often exploring the darker side of 80's Italo-disco, he continues to grow legions of new admirers. 

A few years back he launched his own imprint @OmbraInternational and the label soon established itself as a quality outlet for lovers of this unique brand of synth laden, bass guitar inspired electronica. Recently we collaborated with the label and a selection of the Ombra family to support '30 hours for Beirut' with Ballroom Blitz and Palestinian Radio Alhara to raise money for those most affected by recent event in Beirut. Over the course of the coming week we're delighted to share the sets during this radio event via the Sinchi Channel.

South African mosquitoes didn't actually bite my legs, but the hotel internet in Capetown broke my balls. And then the most "amazing" SoundCloud BETA uploader broke my balls again... Uploaded this mix at least 4 times... 

Most tracks on this mix you should recognize, if you have been listening to me play DJ sets for the last half a year or so. The name of the mix also has to do with the release ( 15 July ) of the Contest Compilation on Digital Structures, that 3 tracks from that compilation are featured in the mix.
