Releasing music since 2008, Hassan Abou Alam is one of Egypt’s musical exports. Over the years, he has released on international labels such as Casa Voyager, Naive, Rhythm Section and Needs. He also worked with Red Bull’s RBMA where he was given the chance to mingle musically with the ancient people of Luxor to create a spellbinding live performance in Cairo, fusing traditional folklore with electronica. Hassan also performed live for Boiler Room a few years ago, showing his versatilely as an artist and cementing his status as one of the most exciting artists right now. 

In this mix, Hassan pulls together some of his favourite tracks at the moment, with records from Koreless, LCY, Walton, Karenn and more. The master’s at work.

@hassan-abou-alam the electronic technician from Egypt's underground, has been riding a long and high wave of peak performances. Following exhilarating live shows and DJ sets including a barrage of hot releases, most notably 'Shalfata' on YUKU and 'Mesh Mafhoom' on Nerve Collect in 2024 and his impeccable sound design has wooed crowds of sweaty ravers on dance floors and off.

Punchy low-ends, broken sound texture, strings full of character whir around, blistering sharp, and strands of traditional Middle Eastern drum patterns reimagined by Abou Alam pierce through sound systems. Genres stripped and mutilated create a gritty, grimy, euphoric experience in borderless sound, leaving scope for sensational body movement in any given setting.

Strapping this heat into an hour podcast for IA MIX 388, Hassan About Alam lets us into his world of music, a delivery of adventurous tracks meticulously placed, launching hard into 2025. Fasten your seatbelts!

First of the eclectic hardcore/jungle sample-spotter mix series.
It's a selection spanning multiple genres from the 60's to the 90's, the common thread being - as ever - that each track was sampled by the hardcore/rave/jungle/DnB scenes - some have just one signature sample, others have been rinsed. Some of these records are incredibly obscure, dug up with help from the RolldaBeats and WhoSampled camps - others are long-standing personal favourites of mine.
This time I've included a few cheeky set-pieces based around reconstructions of hardcore/jungle tracks, or at least paying tribute to them, so keep an eye out for D'Cruze's Bass Go Boom, 4 Hero's darkside classics Journey From The Light and The Element; a trio of Foul Play samples, a cut-up reconstruction of Leviticus' The Burial, a 115bpm tribute to DJ Hype's Tiger Style, and plenty more besides. I can assure you that no jungle records were harmed in the making of this mix, original sources only. And they are so good. As ever - hope you enjoy.

Aslan Venom is a profound DJ, Event Producer, Booker and Dancer from Amsterdam, currently living between Berlin and Wrocław. He is constantly expanding his musical boundaries by delivering a dynamic mix of House, Tech House and Techno and also dares to spin Downtempo, Breaks, Ambient and Trip-Hop beats. 

Extraordinary tracks that surprise friends and enemies, will encourage you to dance vividly until the night turns to dawn. Aslan Venom peeked into abandoned buildings, set up promising lineups and ran away from the authorities. He proved to be a true rave warrior who fought for our right to party freely! With some notorious crews, he succeeded in reviving the atmosphere of the 90s in Berlin's underground. 

With a view to the future, he founded the Vector collective and took a step towards legality by organizing festivals and parties in off-locations.

2020 has come to an end and so is our Podcast Series. Closing the list, we have a true electronic music pioneer in our home town, Steve PD. As an original member of the Pastilla Digital crew, Steve built his reputation as a top-notch DJ by putting together great opening and closing sets, and this time was no exception. Not Sorry club - Uzuri Soundcloud Take Over Day 3 With Sanetran

There are two sides to Cairo-based DJ and producer Hassan Abou Alam's sonic output. While one focuses on the ambient and atmospheric, the other is a form of organised chaos, that matches both synthetic and analogue sound.

These creations have landed on several labels over the last few years including Cologne's Traum Schallplatten, Audiolith and Morocco's Casa Voyager, as well as a very well received debut on Violet's naivety imprint, a sub-label of naive. Local label Rakete was another space for him this year, with him contributing a track to their Quest compilation, before making a return earlier this month for his first solo EP on the imprint, the aptly named Hope Amid Despair.

Following the release, we handed over the reigns to him for this week's Shine A Light On mix, which moves through the spaces between house, breaks, grime and bass. Get yourself acquainted...

Coming out of Egypt, Hassan Abou Alam has shown his varied sound taste with creations on several labels over the last few years including Morocco's @csvoyager, as well as a debut on @violet's naivety imprint, a sub-label of @naivetrax. Local Cairo label @wearerakete was another space for him this year, with his first solo EP on the imprint. For us, he delivers a masterful blend of polyrhythms and breaks that punch through gritty basslines with distinct UK-Bass and rave influences.
