honeydrip (feat. jamie nicole)

A good friend, resident DJ, label boss and founder of The Bunker NY, Bryan Kasenic doesn't usually need an introduction. We'd long seen his sorcery at the helm of the controls at numerous local gatherings, working dance floors with the precision only one with a few decades doing it could, what we'd yet to see was what he'd do on the 'ambient dance floor' i.e. Hypnotic Spa at Nowadays. Herein 96 minutes and 12 seconds attests to that query.  We had our eyes closed as we lied in the dark and dreamt sweet dreams. We recommend doing the same. Track list below. Enjoy the trip!

Bryan Kasenic at Hypnotic Spa

When she's not working behind the counter at Phonica, Lucie divides her time between producing, DJing and performing as Avsluta, free improvisation and creating conceptual sound work. She runs Introspective Electronics, which is a monthly show on Netil Radio and a series of podcasts and chill-out gatherings at The Lion & Lamb in East London. 

Lucie’s second half of 2020 is packed with some exciting releases. First up, she has an electro-acoustic mini-album coming out with David Toop on Cafe OTO’s digital label Takuroku, followed by a collaborative experimental double LP with Christian Duka as Vãdin on Utter, and lastly, a tripped-out, progressive and trancey 12” shared with Miro SundayMusiq for E2-E8 Records.

We first locked on to Spanish-born, South London-based DJ and producer Yuan earlier this year via his release for our sister label Insult To Injury.

His Avance EP, the first cassette release on the label, was an introduction to his mind-melting compositions that saw him dip into diverse influences and style, from burning acid and crisp electro to thumping drum programming and dreamy synth work. 

A snapshot of the sounds you're also likely to hear in his DJ sets, we enlisted him to take the reigns for this week's Shine A Light On mix. Recorded during a strange time both globally and within Yuan's life, the mix comes from a place of darkness, delivered through a mix of ambient, acid, breaks and electro...

Yuan: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

Aslan Venom is a profound DJ, Event Producer, Booker and Dancer from Amsterdam, currently living between Berlin and Wrocław. He is constantly expanding his musical boundaries by delivering a dynamic mix of House, Tech House and Techno and also dares to spin Downtempo, Breaks, Ambient and Trip-Hop beats. 

Extraordinary tracks that surprise friends and enemies, will encourage you to dance vividly until the night turns to dawn. Aslan Venom peeked into abandoned buildings, set up promising lineups and ran away from the authorities. He proved to be a true rave warrior who fought for our right to party freely! With some notorious crews, he succeeded in reviving the atmosphere of the 90s in Berlin's underground. 

With a view to the future, he founded the Vector collective and took a step towards legality by organizing festivals and parties in off-locations.

Canopy Sounds 99: Aslan Venom

Plenty of us have been finding our own ways of staying creative during lockdown, and some have also started trialling new ways of working and collaborating remotely. 

Though DJs Mariiin and Jessica are far apart geographically - Jessica is in Berlin and Mariiin is in Leeds - the pair's musical synergy is very much in sync. 

Both have been making their own musical movements for a while now. Italian born Mariiin has built her rep as a skilled DJ and selector, known for exploring the deeper, immersive realms of electronic music. As well as being one of the residents for Bobby.'s Pleasure Club party in London, she's also a member of Leeds-based music collective Equaliser who provide a platform to empower wxmen, queer and non-binary people. 

In a similar vein, Jessica is the founder of Rhythm Sister, a collective and workshop supporting wxmen, queer and non-binary people to DJ and, more recently, learn about music production. On top of her Rhythm Sister commitments, she's co-founder of Headroom, a small close-knit festival in the countryside of Abergavenny, as well as running her own digital music agency.

During the first round of lockdown, the pair decided to record a b2b from their respective homes, recording 15 minutes each, and sending it back and forth. The result is a mix of deep, hypnotic electronics, that's perfect for your lockdown pre drinks. Hopefully we'll see this pairing play b2b in real life sometime in the future...

Mariiin & Jessica: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

2020 has come to an end and so is our Podcast Series. Closing the list, we have a true electronic music pioneer in our home town, Steve PD. As an original member of the Pastilla Digital crew, Steve built his reputation as a top-notch DJ by putting together great opening and closing sets, and this time was no exception.  In this session, the Hardpop Club ex-resident made sure to include a variety of sounds and textures going from Indie Dance to House and Techno. Enjoy the journey!!

Sanetran is Nadia Sanetra, a Johannesburg-based DJ inspired by otherness and what the future, of especially Africa, sounds like. Influenced by artists throughout dancefloor history who have championed independence, openness and community, Sanetran is interested in expanding boundaries that exist (real and imagined) and inviting and welcoming people who want to share their energy. Nadia is also part of Not Sorry Club, a femme-centric collective aimed at building a more inclusive rave community.

Not Sorry club - Uzuri Soundcloud Take Over Day 3 With Sanetran

There are two sides to Cairo-based DJ and producer Hassan Abou Alam's sonic output. While one focuses on the ambient and atmospheric, the other is a form of organised chaos, that matches both synthetic and analogue sound.

These creations have landed on several labels over the last few years including Cologne's Traum Schallplatten, Audiolith and Morocco's Casa Voyager, as well as a very well received debut on Violet's naivety imprint, a sub-label of naive. Local label Rakete was another space for him this year, with him contributing a track to their Quest compilation, before making a return earlier this month for his first solo EP on the imprint, the aptly named Hope Amid Despair.

Following the release, we handed over the reigns to him for this week's Shine A Light On mix, which moves through the spaces between house, breaks, grime and bass. Get yourself acquainted...

What a year it’s been for Tech Support. Over the past twelve months he’s released exhilarating material through the likes of Silver Bear Recordings and Shadow City LTD, not to mention starting his own label Together Alone Records. His fresh and unique sound is mirrored in the slick mix that he’s brought to the series today, which takes you on a journey through some of the best and most varied tunes of 2020. Expect to hear tracks from INVŌKER, Theus Mago and The Emperor Machine, as well as an unreleased banger from the man himself.

Clandestino 165 - Tech Support

It's almost been a year since the pandemic hit and turned our world upside down and there still seems some way to go until we can get together and celebrate life in all its glory. In order to keep us going and not get overrun by Winter depression, we invited our buddy Fedde aka Bobby Cazanova to spread some positive vibes. 

Bobby Cazanova (real name Federico Icaza Graue)is a producer and DJ from Mexico City based in Berlin. Throughout the last years he had releases on labels such as Cologne's young but already impressive Hen & Goose Records and London's Childsplay. You might have also run into him around Else, where he helped to keep up the last bastion of open-air locations, taking care that the soundsystem always is on point.

For Loser Records, he explored music and sounds of Europe from as early as 1965 (Marlene Dietrich) and as new as Donato Dozzy's latest project (Il Quadro di Troisi) released in 2020. The mix consists of some rare gems out of his vinyl collection, including records from Germany, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Norway, the former USSR and finally as the only exception to Europe, Australia.

There could not have been any better timing for this mix, celebrating the diversity of European music and reminding us we are all in this together.
