SMOOD is a collaboration of DJ Aleksi and Shoulderpipe, hailing from Helsinki, Finland. SMOOD stands for humble devotion for music, especially outside of the general norms. This philosophy has led the duo to numerous interesting places, most notably to the airwaves of the Finnish broadcast radio station Basso, as well as to the London­-based Radar Radio. Both shows mainly feature machine made music with a definitive groove, the former focusing also on DJ ­culture and the latter presenting Nordic music to a wider audience. 
2016 is shaping up to be an interesting year for the duo, with their own evening in Helsinki boasting excellent guests (Sean Dixon and Samo DJ have stopped by, next up will be Dane from Canada), first musical interpretations being featured on the Radar compilation, and many interesting festivals and clubs lined up for the summer. 

Any interesting things coming in the future?

Shoulderpipe: Yes indeed, the summer is really great this year. We’ll kick off our July at the new Visio Festival here in Helsinki on the 1st of July. After that it’s going to be our first visit to Lithuania on the 2nd where we’ll be playing at Studio 9’s terrace. Looking forward to that a lot! Some other highlights coming up are The Gathering by Honest Electronics at the Tamassos resevoire in Cyprus, as well as our absolute favorite festival Turku Modern. Luckily there’s time to relax at the end of July, to go fishing and just catch some sleep. A balanced life is important. 

Your favorite releases at the moment?

DJ Aleksi: There are so many good releases coming out all the time, but one I need to mention is Dorisburg's Irrbloss ­album. It came out quite early this year, but it is the one which I always go back to. Very atmospheric, deep and such an emotional entity. 

Shoulderpipe: Honestly, there are so many that it is really hard to pick just a few. We got to play with Samo DJ a little while back, and everything he has put out has since been in heavy rotation. I’ve also lately been listening to a lot of Australian labels, especially releases from Superconcious Records, Voyage, and Butter Sessions tend to be out of this world. In general, everything that is a bit weird, kind of wrong in the right way with pads and odd structures really moves me at the moment. And old leftfield disco. Can’t get enough of that. 

Your favorite city and a place in that city?

Shoulderpipe: Helsinki, Finland and especially the record store Good Crates ­Digger’s Gym. Also, hometown love for Karis, Finland is always strong. 

DJ Aleksi: Helsinki is the place for me as well. My favourite spots here are my home, Good Crates, Kaiku and the beach areas where you can just sit down and look at the sea.

Patrice has a few words he would like to say... 

“Ahead of my GU42 Berlin album release on March 29th, I wanted to share a very special live set from the other side of the planet. Like Berlin, Rainbow Serpent is an anomaly on the rave map. This mix will be online for a very limited period only:

The best dance floor in the world. That’s the Market Stage of Rainbow Serpent Festival to me. The energy of the Rainbow tribe, the rabid vibe and feeling of unity are difficult to describe to anyone who has not been here. Simply standing on the dancefloor and experience this incredible sound system is one of life’s finer pleasures. I felt absolutely honoured to be trusted with the task to close the festival. Looking onto the dancefloor from the dj booth, the Market Stage painted a beautiful picture. The atmosphere was electric and love-drunk all day, Nick Warren and D-Nox brought their A-game.

This is my third year in a row playing here and the absolute highlight on my yearly calendar. In these years my wife and I have made friends for life here, which is why we release this mix with our beloved Wildwood crew. We have grown extremely fond of Australia as a country. This place has received us with open arms from day one and never fails to blow our minds in many different ways. It has become our second home.

It’s pretty hard to describe anything from Burning Man without using phrases, sounding pathetic or cheesy. 
So maybe I shouldn’t try. Or I just don’t care about it?
Pablo asked for a little intro about my set in the tie-up night with Robot Heart when I played the Mayan Warrior art car, so here we go:
Every night, when the Mayan Warrior art car leaves its camp on it’s way to the deep playa it feels pretty sublime, like a wake up call for the rave kids with this drum beats, like a ritual where they follow it’s spiritual leader, the warrior dancer follow their flagship art car, it’s getting more and more crowded, surrounded by hundreds of bikes and of course I’m super nervous entering this elevated Dj booth, shaking from the bass or is it just me? And from one moment to another I am in the middle of lasers and fire, I am taking over the booth and after a second I’ve forgotten every fear and just start playing...

Today's installment in the Booms and Claps mix series comes to us from London's Lewis James in the form of a 47 minute turbo-charged high octane journey through halftime drum and bass beats, footwork, jungle, electro-influenced ghettotech and juke, and 160 bpm rave music. We've had our eye on Lewis for quite some time now, from his early self-released Bandcamp beats, to releases on the legendary Lowriders Recordings and Rua Sound, to his recent success with major uptempo bass music imprints like 1985 Music and Astrophonica Recordings, and we couldn't be more excited to see where he goes from here. From what we're hearing in this mix, it seems like he's taken an interest in the four on the floor 160 bpm electro sound that has been championed recently by folks like Fracture and Om Unit, and we certainly hope there's more to come from him in that vein. Without further ado, we're proud to present BnC Mix 047: Lewis James.

Next up, a familiar face to some and a fresh introduction for those uninitiated. 

Lorca has been a presence amidst underground house and electronic music in the UK for quite some time now having released music on the likes of Church, Naked Naked, 2020 and more over a number of years. He has drawn upon a deep rooted love of house music which has been a staple element of his own sound which has been widely championed and supported by a broad spectrum of djs. 

Despite having amassed a reputation as a talented producer he hasn't perhaps received the level of acclaim which he should be entitled to. In the past few years he has reignited his musical presence through the rebirth of Live Ones, a record label which is now moving from strength to strength having recently released music by Dj Windows XP and Sune. 

As a Dj he is eclectic and forward thinking. His ability to read a room is impressive and this is best shown at the party which he runs alongside Kieran A at Tola in Peckham. The next edition will take place this Saturday. We invited him to showcase his sound in a carefully crafted mix.
