Christine Renée, a sonic storyteller and American expat, curates themed sets and occasionally interviews a variety of sound artists on her show FOR THE BIRDS. She's collected records since the '90s and DJed since the '00s. Renowned for her residency at Lot Radio (2016) and role at hi-fi club Public Records as head curator (2019), she's now studying sound as a healing modality.

High above the desert, where the sky spilled its secrets in stars, the brightest among them was Altair. To the villagers below, it was more than a star—it was a guardian.

Generations passed, but Altair never dimmed. Pilgrims crossed miles of sand to sit under its light and make wishes. Some claimed they saw a flicker.

On a clear night, if you stare long enough, you might see wings in the darkness. Illuminated against the dense black.

For in the sky, where time folds and dreams take flight, Altair burnt brighter than all else.

 Two Thou is the lead behind the Oraculu project – a hybrid jazz exploration with ambient undertones described as follows:

“This music was born in Berlin, matured with me through a winter in the rural Sardinia, and ended up on wax through Chicago and New York. With this record, that to me sounds in-between worlds, I want to recall that jazz and electronic music both emerged as inventions, and it seems to me they’re both suggesting us to keep inventing.”

Across six tracks, a dream unfurls into sound – patterns emerging like scattered water droplets, a flowing dance of chance and texture.
For Turmalin Dub, Tom of Terram (an alias of Tom Sprenger, one half of Hektisch Sprengen) teams up with Listensport. This EP flourishes in the fertile space between the organic and the synthetic, where textures breathe and rhythms pulse like living beings. It is shaped by five original creations and a ’90s-inspired French Dreamspell house remix by RAMZi, carrying the timeless spirit of the dancefloor.

Turmalin Dub stands as a musical crystal, refracting light into deep colour and pulse; a fortress for the spirited and unconventional, an elegant tapestry of sound. The opening track weaves psychedelic hues with Balearic warmth, dubwise basslines, and whispers of slippery roots-reggae dub. Trance-inflected echoes flow together like water: from immersive ambient waves to intricate patterns and softly blurred dub techno. The release closes with Spirit, a track echoing the warmth and sway of trancehall, bridging introspective moments and the kinetic energy of a floor in motion.

The way the leaves moved in sync with the wind, the patterns in the clouds, the gentle hum of the world—it was all connected.

Neurodiversity, wasn’t about fitting in—it was about seeing the world in ways others might never imagine.

He watched as it all whizzed and whirred around him, lines and shapes made sense in a way words sometimes didn’t.

Where others saw chaos, he saw rhythm.

It was simply time to enjoy the dance.

It’s a Good Start of Nothing takes its name from a dyslexic twist on “a good start of something” a slip that unexpectedly revealed something more fitting. Centered around swirling sonic elements and grounded by a low bass, it explores how complexity can emerge from apparent randomness. Like the title itself, it embraces the unknown, suggesting that beginnings don’t always need definitions and the act of making doesn’t need a clear end. Sometimes, not knowing is part of the shape. It is necessary to the process. And maybe, in the end, this is nothing. And that’s ok.

Yoann Pisterman is a French sound artist and composer based in Berlin. Originally trained in visual arts, his practice began with drawn landscapes blending architecture and vegetation. Sound emerged in response and gradually became the core of his work. He describes it as “painting with sound.” 

His compositions move between ambient, kraut, electroacoustic, and experimental forms; balancing softness with density, surface with depth. A kind of childlike topography for deep listeners: light yet intricate, subtly shifting perception and sculpting space. the end, this is nothing. And that’s okay.

London producer Will Archer is better known as Slime. We’re not sure why, and the name certainly isn’t very indicative of his sound, but we like it. Obsessed by electronic music and the idea that the possibilities are endless, the multi-instrumentalist makes unexpected RnB that instantly takes you to a hazy place peppered with sexy sax. If you haven’t already, we highly recommend you check out his Dan Brereton-directed video for Hotdog in which, yes, a giant hotdog man walks around a lonely village by himself. Solid Steel in association with Serato (29th April) We welcome Guy Andrews in Hour 1 following the release of his album 'Our Spaces'  on Houndstooth last month. He's had previous releases on Hotflush and Hemlock Recordings, plus a collaboration with Masayoshi Fujita as a joint release with Erased Tapes for Record Store Day. This and some of the album tracks feature in his mix alongside music from Halves, ANOHNI, Mogwai, Vessel and Alva Noto. He had this to say;

"The mix is based around a collection of tunes that I've been listening to a lot both recently and over the past few years. I wanted to capture the more ambient, experimental and post-rock end of my music taste, mixing together timeless classics with some newer tracks I've discovered. Regardless of how old some of the tunes are, they all continue to influence me on both a musical and personal level."

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th May) Roly Porter takes charge of Hr 1 this week. He began his career as part of Vex’d alongside Kuedo, releasing two albums, Degenerate and Cloud Seed, both on Planet Mu, along with several singles on Bristol’s Subtext imprint. He later returned to Subtext under his own name to begin a solo project, releasing 'Aftertime' and 'Life Cycle of a Massive Star'. Earlier this year he released Third Law on TriAngle and 2 tracks from the album feature in his mix alongside music from Surgeon, Kowton, Amnesia Scanner, Yearning Kru and Aisha Devi.

~ About The Story ~

Everybody has a little bit of the sun and moon in them. Everybody has a little bit of man, woman, and animal in them. Darks and lights in them. Everyone is part of a connected cosmic system. Part earth and sea, wind and fire, with some salt and dust swimming in them. We have a universe within ourselves that mimics the universe outside. None of us are just black or white, or never wrong and always right. No one. No one exists without polarities. Everybody has good and bad forces working with them, against them, and within them.

"This mix was inspired by my friends, the people I am most closely connected to. I wanted to create something calm and beautiful, to offer some brief respite and escape. I might compile a tracklist at some point, but for now please just disconnect, zone out, and enjoy the mix. It was recorded in one take at home in Tokyo, October 2016. Based in London the singular sounds of Lung Dart have resonated with a niche yet heavily engaged audience.

Blending weirdo ambience alongside dusty bass and beyond they have crafted a place for themselves amidst the sprawling, monster of a city. Their music is as much a soundtrack for the dystopian city as it is for individual listening. This is something which translates well beyond their own productions and into their spectacularly crafted mixes, which you are about to discover all for yourself. 

We have long since been fans of the duo. It is a pleasure to have them contribute a truly original mix to the alternative series.
