My next guest is Etiennette, a Berlin-based DJ. @etiennettereimann
And I am happy she followed my invite to contribute with this mix! She's bringing a beautiful atmospheric set for some Moments of Light 'n Darkness with some amazing foggy soundscapes. And what I find funny about, that we first came in contact to each other by chance at my working place in Neukölln talking about topics like health care and personal developement - ..and finally found out about her passion for dubby vibes. Sometimes Berlin really is a small village..

Etiennette is regularly active in the city’s House, Deep House and Minimal scene.
While this is the sound she’s most often associated with, her connection to Dub Techno has always been present – and this mix gave her the chance to fully explore that side of her musical identity. It was a special set for her to create, and one that means a lot.

The mix moves through slower, deeper and more introspective moods, while still carrying subtle traces of her house-rooted, minimalistic approach.
Many of the artists featured – including Roger Gerressen, Per Hammar, Efdemin, Joe Davies, Jay Tripwire and Grad U – also appear in her club sets, now brought together in a different context.

Active at Elevate Records in Berlin, Etiennette continues to seek out new sonic territories. This mix is one of them.

DC Promo Tracks: Hiworld "New Future"

Co-Accused Records return this autumn with From The Pit, a four-track EP from Paris-born, Berlin-based producer SOD-90 that seeks out connections between electro, industrial, breakbeat and EBM. Locking into the raw, gritty range of distortion that defines his sound, the release also features a remix from Hamburg’s L.F.T. and follows SOD-90’s label debut with 'Saving Up For Botox’ last year.

A classically trained flautist, professional musician and teacher, SOD-90’s electronic production has become an increasingly vital part of his daily life. Working almost exclusively with hardware, his tracks emerge from spontaneous sessions as a channel for emotional release, fuelled by bursts of adrenaline and a need to counterbalance the refinement of classical music. Distortion, for him, is a way to dig deeper into timbre and sonic depth, pulling distinctive textures out of his machines.

Opener ‘Fugitive Passagére’ sets the tone with driving kick drums, distorted vocal fragments and full-throttle energy aimed straight at the club. L.F.T. 's remix twists it into a dark electro moment, layering a jagged bassline over razor sharp beats. On the B side, ‘Muzzle’ goes all-in on blown-out distortion and breakbeat force, before closer ‘Rust Fountain’ moves into complex, off-kilter territory with ricocheting synths and layered percussion.

Ivan Smagghe is the seamlessly cool founder behind Les Disques de la Mort. For years he has been regarded as one of the leading figures in Electronic music and continues to push the boundaries between the weird, wonderful, obscure and danceable, alongside the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Optimo, Trevor Jackson and more. He slots firmly into chic French fashion culture and gritty, underground musical eclecticism at the same time. Over the past couple of years his label has released music from far and wide: pop obscurities from Israel, punk funk from Lithuania and experimental electronics from the likes of Mutado Pintado, Golden Bug and Margot. He delivers over an hour of energetic fun for Ransom Note.

The multifarious sounds of Joe Europe first appeared on our radar with his eponymous EP for Vitalik back in 2012, laden with breezy melodic grooves on a proper deep house tip. Raised on a diet of Shropshire’s free party scene and his big brother’s Dave Clarke’s mixtapes, he runs the Ears Have Eyes label and parties and has received praise from the likes of Resident Advisor and Ibiza Voice for his productions. Since he first came to our attention, he has taken his sound into deeper, more atmospheric territory, with a new acid gurgler on Flumo Recordings (included here) a particular highlight alongside output for FALK, Bokharia and Teleskopic. His Monologues mix collates a bevvy of his unreleased sounds, ranging from ambient textures to 303 workouts and the deepest of techno, all delivered at a delightfully chuggy pace.

*How would you describe your sound?* 

I would describe my sound as the product of over two decades of loving dance music, both electronic and otherwise and all that comes with it. I guess I stick pretty firmly within the realms of house and techno, and listening back to this it seems I quite like my acid too! I love the mechanical element of techno and I think that's in my sound, but I also love music to have soul and maybe a bit of funk to it as well. 

 *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

As I said before I've been a huge fan of electronic music since I was about 11. Music-wise I would have to say my influences are everything from Dave Clarke (my earliest encounter with electronic music) to LFO to UR to Metalheadz to disco to funk to jazz to The Cure to Derrick Carter. Beyond music though, my influences come from spending all my free time reading about ancient history and science/the future. Frank Herbert, Kurt Vonnegut, proper curry, The Simpsons. My cat [pictured] has been a big inspiration since we got him a few months back. 

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

All of the tracks on this mix are unreleased except for one (Deep Point - which will be out soon on Flumo). I write a lot of music and this is just a cross-section of what I've got going on. Some has been sent to labels, most hasn't and probably never will. I guess it's just nice to show people where my head is at but you will have to excuse their lack of polish. Most of these tracks were never intended to see the light of day!

Payphone talk quarantines and international smark. Following two fairly monster releases on Golf Channel Records there has been a bit of a storm surrounding a four to the floor etiquette which surrounds the music. Secretive and infamous there is a radiant swagger surrounding each release and in the forthcoming weeks a third EP will land on Phil South's Golf Channel imprint in which Payfone fits so well. Carlos Valdes has been at the heart of the Amsterdam scene for years, as a DJ, label boss and promoter. His DJ sets mix up everything from hypnotic techno to kicking house and, rather than playing all the big hits, he selects the records that make most sense at the time. Magnus International is a Norwegian producer who is at the forefront of the new wave. Full Pupp have long since been doing their own thing, pushing the boundaries of sonics and modern day club music. It was on Prins Thomas' label that he chose to release his debut LP following a stream of singular EP's. His sound dabbles in the warm textures and sits somewhere between the realms of house and disco. This mix is an exploration into his musical inspirations and a showcase of what you might hear him playing in the club at present.
