I took part in a group vocal and movement improvisation at the weekend and from the recording of that I built this piece in Ableton Live. There was 11 of us and we had our eyes closed, so the improvisation - as fits with the @disquiet project this week - would align and then go wayward. I've tried to bring that out more in this rearrangement.

Schleswig-Holstein is a thin land bridge between the mighty hull of the North German lowlands and the long pointed head of the Jutland peninsula, with the gentle Baltic Sea on one side, and the rough North Sea on the other. Numerous lakes, deciduous forests and wide corridors have shaped this region since its formation during the last ice age. The varied landscape, covered with fertile clay and littered with countless large and small granite blocks, is the legacy of the glaciers.

Fascinated by the cultural and geographical history of his homeland, Phil Struck recorded sonic impressions after hikes, wanderings, daydreams, historical readings and childhood memories. Schleswig-Holstein Aufnahmen is the distillation of these diaristic recordings, made between 2017 and 2019, using a sampler, synthesizer, and worn flea market records. Much like the cyclical musings of W.G. Sebald, or Cluster’s pastoral electronic miniatures, these works are intrinsically tied to the landscape of which they were born. The wobble and crackle of the samples is evocative of the craggy scenery of the lowlands, and also describes the patinated atmosphere of memory, found in the work of Vladislav Delay, Pole, Caretaker, Philip Jeck, Ken Jacobs, and Bill Morrison. The painting adorning the album cover was done by Struck’s great grandfather who was also seduced by this meandering windswept land.

The Best Effort Show - Episode Fifteen

French composer and producer Maxime Denuc takes an unorthodox approach to electronic music, drawing from influences in classical, baroque, noise, contemporary and rave. Formerly as part of Plapla Pinky, the duo he co-founded with Raphaël Hénard, he made homes on the likes of Sonore, Kuntur Records and Choral Records, the label the pair launched in 2015. 

In addition to his work as a composer, Maxime has a strong interest in research, previously exploring musicology and the theories and practices of language and arts through his further education, while now he's focusing on his output as a solo artist with the release of Solarium, an hour and a half organ piece intended for the "afters" on Belgian label Vlek.

Following Solarium's release, we invited Maxime to help us blow away the cobwebs, and he succeeds emphatically by blessing us with a mix of choral pieces and compositions from the XIIth to the XVIIth century, moving chronologically from occidental music, through to the middle ages and the baroque era.

Having released "L'Île Sous l'Eau" with us only a short time ago we are very happy to have this here cochlea cockle from a man who very nearly went by the name ‘DJ Windsurfing Life’ and place it into the figurative bucket that is our Forecast series. Vague Imaginaires - as well as being an old and dear friend of ours - is an artist that we knew we absolutely had to work with way back when we began our mission to spread cultural Marxism/quantum mysticism through a relatively small, boutique record label and having had the feedback on his EP we’re very pleased that our intuition was a winner and had not been completely corrupted by the amount of lava lamp liquid we had been consuming. We feel the mix gives quite a lovely insight into the sorts of sounds that influence Vague Imaginaires’ creative machinations and pairs incredibly well with the outstanding levels of vitamin D currently pouring down on us, even more so if there’s a Negroni involved.
