Beyond the fabled chill-out room and into the field we go...

Joe Muggs has lived and breathed 'electronic music culture' for many, many years... like a lot of us probably for more than he'd care to imagine.  From journalist and observer to active participant and curator, beyond his celebrated writing career spanning publications like The Wire, FACT, The Guardian, and his co-authorship of  Bass, Mids, Tops: An Oral History of Soundsystem Culture. Muggs has built many bridges across the worlds of the electronic and handily, for us, ambient.

Experimental, ambient, and leftfield sounds to the fore, get horizontal. Something's feeling quite full circle here.

So it is with some excitement that Joe agreed to don his ambient trousers again and step up for part 4 of the Seeds mix. "Music to Smell the Jasmine Whilst Watching for Bats in the Twilight" encapsulates what is often a poetic approach to ambient curation - clearly less about the dancefloor and more about creating an experience that enhances the environment around you.

The siren roared from atop the lighthouse as the storm battered against the coast. It was a night of trouble in the bay and at this point it was hard to tell who or what might make it out alive. The wind howled with a wild roar as the rain crashed down from the blackened heavens up above. Boats tossed and turned in an attempt to wrestle with the dangerous waves and they could only hope that the weather might soon pass. This was unprecedented, a beating like no other. 

Autarkic is set to release a startling new EP on Hoga Nord Rekords, an imprint of which we are very fond. He delivers a trademark blow to the club with intriguing orchestration and melody.

North East duo @Forriner are back with their third and final instalment of the Samurai trilogy on their eponymous 'Forriner Music' imprint. Following a couple of impressive showings with previous EP's 'Condor' and 'In the B' they return  with ’17:17 Neon'. A four tracker of experimental club music for powerful dance floor experiences that offers two originals as well as a banger from Bird Of Paradise  (@sulkmagic)and Legget and Suade for the remixes.

Here we present the remix of Neon by Jo Howard aka Bird of Paradise who takes the reins delivering a charging peak-time club tool with relentless batteries of percussion setting the stage for a trippy soundscape. Other than their Northern roots, what these producers have in common is a distinctive approach to rhythm. The restlessness of the sharp stabs of static perfectly guiding the darkly pulsing mood.

Phantasy Sound regulars Cowboy Rhythmbox return to the imprint this November with three esoteric cuts entitled ‘Terminal Madness’.

After solid releases throughout 2018 from Daniel Avery, Ghost Culture, James Welsh and Red Axes to name a few, Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound return with a triple pronged battle weapon from Cowboy Rhythmbox that takes in inspiration from a wealth of disparate elements; the brutal drum machine swagger of early Chicago house, the murky world of 1980's video arcades, the bleeps of Sheffield, arcane home computing documentaries recorded to VHS, public access TV.

‘Terminal Madness’ is a quirky track about the paranoia surrounding artificial intelligence, inspired by early Dance Mania releases and broken pocket calculators amongst other things. ‘Hands Inside The Car’ then deploys a wonderful eccentric atmosphere through a deadpan vocal hook that wraps itself around a killer combination of sub bass, freestyle beats and deranged reversed elements.

‘Vodonik’ finishes with a stark, glacial rave beast, very much a reaction against Cowboy Rhythmbox's usual maximal approach. This is stripped-down-to-the-bone body music that will work in the most cavernous of rave palaces or the most intimate seedy basement club.
