} From A Coruscating Hope’s very first sputters of tapping percussion and crackling texture - Skegness, England based producer Dean Grant Collier, known as Grant Deane, weaves a web of hypnotic and mysterious dichotomy. It is a record draped in haze - both cloaked in nuanced and cloudy tones and somehow equally as illuminating and vivid. As the pieces gently unfurl there is a sense of wandering through the fantastic, though at 8 tracks and 46 minutes it is hardly a meander - nor is it brisk. A Coruscating Hope is ostensibly a minimal techno record, albeit one that lurches forward through muted IDM kissed soundscapes; but, it is brimming with life and motion. Taking inspiration from the minutiae of complex emotional scapes as well as brutalist architecture, Grant Deane’s shimmering productions map out an inner journey - a view from a train merging with the commuting occupants’ reflections. 

}} A Coruscating Hope’s tracks are meditations - tone poems where snippets of vocals and carefully assembled snaking synths wind beguilingly around jagged percussion interjections on liquid grooves. At times such as in “The Surfacing Dawn”, “Potential Energy” and say “Stuff Falling” the effect is a warm lull of synaptic agreement, chugging along with grace and poise. At others such as on “With Less of a Jolt Than We Were Braced For” and “Forever Wanting To Be Over There” the effect is more unstable, with dissonant tones mounting and swirling around the groove in a deftly manoeuvred balancing act - one in which the titles themselves give clever hints as to what is causing the mischief - whether they be implied anxiety or yearning.  In this way the record feels intensely personal, concise and yet expansive, moody and yet optimistic. 

}}} A Coruscating Hope, it might therefore be said, is a record poised at the crossroads of listening environment applications: there are a few moments for the adventurous dancefloor to be sure, but much of the record truly lies in a hypnagogic inner space…a soundtrack for contemplative rumination and self discovery.

He traipsed around the empty streets of the dilapidated town, cutting a lonely, somewhat ghostly figure. He sighed, his shoulders heavy. Everyone he knew had gone. Moved on to pastures new. He missed them dearly. Missed the laughter, the fun.

Wandering up one of the side streets, he realised he'd stumbled into unfamiliar territory. "How odd," he muttered to himself, curiously. "I've never been up here before." As he meandered further up the cobbled street his ears pricked up. A beat carried on breeze and down towards him. Where was it coming from? He followed it, like a hound follows a scent, until he caught it. He stopped outside what appeared to be an old tavern, nervously and cautiously he pushed the door ajar. Joyous laughter and music filled the room. He stood staring in awe and began to cry tears of happiness. 

Bioroots Drift EP is the inaugural release on Enclave Records, a label whose ethos is to deliver house, disco and techno without all the gimmicks. They aim to be "solace from the meaningless, the throwaway, the empty."

The hotel was busy with customers and guests, it was a friday night after all and it would be expected to be as such. It was the first time that they had ever been invited into such a fine establishment, had they ever thought that they might have ended up here? The marble floor glimmered under the glow of electric lights and small groups of people held sophisticated conversations in elegant hallways. It was packed to the rafters with the other side of life and yet they still lived on the fringes of the world left outside. 

Efficient Space are set to continue their fine form as the label prepares to release a compilation of oddball dance cuts lost to the depths of obscurity and rescued. It's bloody brilliant.

Hailing from Stockholm’s fertile electronic music scene, Saine & Smith - aka Jaja Saine and Leo Smith - are a duo exploring diasporic strands of leftfield dance music. Their second release - the Dirty Games EP - is a diverse package of soul-tinged house employing a range of styles into one cohesive sound.

Across six tracks, the duo meander through jazzy chords, infectious basslines and swung percussion with a subtle hint of dub. At once hedonistic and reflective, their constructions brandish a careful blend of dancefloor function and cerebral stimulation.

From the glistening melody and chugging percussion of the title track to the deep, hazy chords of ‘Rasta 116’ via the high energy angular structures of ‘Moon Monsters’, the Dirty Games EP offers a truly broad spectrum of ideas presented in fully fledged, radiant colour.

The Portuguese say that ‘saudade’, the emotional state of nostalgia and the emotional thrills it can trigger, is an extremely powerful thing. It’s certainly hit Tom Trago hard in recent times, with the Dutch producer naming his new self- released single – his first since 2017 – after this distinctively warm and fuzzy heightened emotional state.

Trago’s nostalgia pangs were a direct response to his new life on the Netherlands’ North Sea-facing West Coast, a move that provided the musical inspiration for his 2018 album “Bergen”. While happy in his new home studio, Trago found his mind wandering back to countless happy days and nights spent jamming with friends and contemporaries in his basement studio beneath Volkshotel in Amsterdam.

“Saudade”, Trago’s latest single, was made during one of those all-night Amsterdam studio sessions alongside JP Enfant, a DJ/producer best known for his residency at De School and releases on his LET Recordings. The A- side “Main Mix” fizzes with excitement and the possibilities of the night ahead. Sentimental, emotion-stirring chords, lilting lead lines, chiming melodies and ecstatic electronics rise above a chunky, hot-stepping drum machine rhythm. It’s nostalgic but immediate: a musical marriage of two giddy producers living for the moment.

On the flip you’ll find the “Ambient Mix” set to soundtrack slow-burn sunrises the world over. All immersive synthesizer chords, yearning musical motifs and seductive melodies, it sees Trago delivering a suitably tactile and loved-up soundtrack with which to usher in the dawn of a new day.
