Furious Frank returns to Butter Sessions with 'Ahora Sí'. The fully fledged house anthem is the result of a cross-continental collaboration with Barcelona based vocalist and producer Ivy Barkakati. 

We're treated to four versions of 'Ahora Sí', all tested and ready for the dance floor and those special moments! Kicking it off, Frank delivers his "Original Acid Mix". A deep, squelchy lurker with nods to late 80's and 90's house music, peaking with thick piano chords and Barkakati's deep Spanish vocals. On the 'Sunrise' mix, the piano and chords become the focus and set the mood for an uplifting journey, bolstered by the raw thump and jack of the drum machines. 

The flip side see's Barcelona based "IVAN" emerge with their version. The duo made up of Ivy Barkakati and Phran of Klasse Wrecks fame slow things down a touch, mangle the chords and inject the rhythm with flattering top-drawer percussion. Vancouver native D. Tiffany rounds the EP off with sub-heavy bass drops, hi-tek rhythms, euphoric vocal slithers and more stingin' acidic vibes.

Just after releasing 'Solidify' on Le Temps Perdu, STATUE (Tom Gould) has become a cornerstone of this years, 'Summer Riot VIII' compilation commissioned by purveyors of good groove, Futureboogie. 'Ivory' is a shining collage of live percussive work and ‘hands in the air’ piano and organ motifs, driven by its steady house rhythm. 

Futureboogie's eighth annual Summer Riot compilation EP is an eclectic gathering of producers and tracks that fittingly encapsulate the current balmy vibes and a summer load of festivals and parties already behind us.

Secret Factory return to their own label with another fresh underground house offering that includes remixes from TERR and MAN2.0. This Hungarian pair is legendary in their homeland having put on Secret Fusion parties there for the last 20 years. Since 2019 they have established their label of the same name with the sort of sounds they play in their tasteful yet experimental house, disco and techno sets. Their first original is ‘Hashen Tashen’, a brilliantly melodic track with rich xylophones and rubbery drums getting you on your toes. Cosmic pads add future vibes and the whole thing is stylishly slick and serene.
First to remix is Brazilian-born, Berlin-based DJ and producer Terr who is making waves on labels like Phantasy Sounds. Her version is an intense affair with driving drums and lasers shooting across the face. It has ping-pong melodies and frazzled synth lasers that all bring raw energy. Then comes London’s MAN2.0, a man who takes cues from 80's synth, EBM and “toy instruments from charity shops” amongst other things. Andrew Weatherall is a fan and will likely appreciate the macho twisted disco of this twisted chugger.
The final hurrah is Secret Factory’s ‘No Garbage Please’, a breezy cosmic house cut with more meticulous melodies and pads. Well treated vocals are another subtlety that ensures this is further winning effort.
This third release yet again proves Secret Fusion is a label as vital as the party it came from.

For this 4th Premiere of 2020, we have a track by the Romanian producer Datacrashrobot from the upcoming EP "Dynamic Dispatch Mechanism" [RR20D] on the Belgian label : Roulette Rekordz.

Roulette Rekordz is a small DIY label created in 2002 by IKKo & Poladroïd. Active between 2003 and 2007 the label stopped its activities shortly after its 14th vinyl release.
12 years later, the decision to complete another cycle has been taken...

The track we chose to premiere is entitled ‘Multipath Propagation’ and will be available in Digital only from January 20, 2020 on Bandcamp : www.rouletterekordz.bandcamp.com

It's been a long, winding road to Hailu Mergia's sixth decade of musical activity. From a young musician in the 60s starting out in Addis Ababa to the 70s golden age of dance bands to the new hope as an emigre in America to the drier period of the 90s and 2000s when he mainly played keyboard in his taxi while waiting in the airport queue or at home with friends. More recently, with the reissue of his classic works and a re-assessment of his role in Ethiopian music history, Mergia has played to audiences big and small in some of the most cherished venues around the world. With his 2018 critical breakthrough "Lala Belu" Mergia consolidated his legacy, producing the album on his own and connecting with listeners through his vision of modern Ethiopian music. Extensive touring after the record revealed an artist who is in no way stuck in the nostalgia for the “golden age” sound. The press agreed, including the New York Times, BBC and Pitchfork, calling his music “triumphantly in the present” in its Best 200 Albums of the 2010's list. 

Mergia's new album "Yene Mircha" ("My Choice" in Amharic) encapsulates many of the things that make the keyboardist, accordionist and composer-arranger remarkable—elements that have persisted to maintain his vitality all these years, through the ebb and flow of his career. The rock solid trio with whom he has toured the world most recently, DC-based Alemseged Kebede (bass) and Ken Joseph (drums), forms the nucleus around which an expanded band makes a potent response to the contemporary jazz future "Lala Belu" promised. "Yene Mircha" calcifies Mergia's prolific stream of creativity and his philosophy that there is a multitude of Ethiopian musical approaches, not just one sound. 

Enlisting the help of master mesenqo (traditional stringed instrument) player Setegn Atenaw, celebrated vocalist Tsehay Kassa and legendary saxophone player Moges Habte from his 70s outfit Walias Band, Mergia enhances his bright, electric band on this recording with an expanded line up on some songs. Mergia produced the album which features several of his original compositions along with songs by Asnakesh Worku and Teddy Afro. An artist still reinventing his sound every night on stage during his marathon live sets, this 74-year-old icon refuses to make the same album twice. His creative process in the studio—starting with the core band, then after listening extensively over weeks and months adding more sounds and instruments—is as urgent and risky as his concerts can be, pushing the band to the outer limits of group improvisation and back with chord extensions during his exploratory solos. "Yene Mircha" captures this live experience and fosters an expansive view of what else could be in store for this tireless practitioner of Ethiopian music.

The stars were sparkling brighter than ever tonight; a thick fog had hung in the air recently and they had become something of a distant memory. He dragged his telescope over to the window and gazed up at the sky above. On nights like this he would allow his imagination to run wild; to think of other life forms that may be looking back down at him from some far flung planet. 

The next release on Istanbul-based label Sitdownandance comes from local DJ, producer and label co-founder Dogukan Acar AKA Fluctuosa. Titled Carbon chauvinism, the record is based around the same subject - a new word meant to disparage the assumption that the chemical processes of extraterrestrial life must be constructed primarily from carbon, because its properties are far superior to other elements. The concept runs through the track names from 'Organic Compounds' and 'Silicates' to our pick 'Graphite Cube', while the sonic influences throughout the release call on Fluctuosa's influences in braindance and Drexciyan electro.
