OS Premiere: Gilbert - Swamps on Jupiter [Echocentric Records]

They floated overhead, hovering above the water below. Boats moved beneath their shadows taking passengers from place to place, the Aegean clouds simply watched on. The air was warm that afternoon, there was a thick humidity to it and despite them being far out at sea it was still dense and claustrophobic at times. Thankfully the waves rolled gently beneath them for had they been wild and furious the whole experience might have been something else entirely. Soon they would be back on dry land, soon they would be home. 

Gilbert is set to release a new EP on Echocentric Records, the Bristol based producer has fired up his machines for an analogue affair channeling house and electro sounds throughout. Due for release on the 13th of August this one comes recommended.

Since 2014, www.inn8.net has been delivering high quality "slow journalism", serving up articles that shine a light on artists that have otherwise gone under the radar. 

Four years on, the Innate team has decided to launch their own imprint with the same stated aims, namely to showcase deep electronic music with warmth and soul, produced by unheralded heroes old and new.

Gilbert - Birds of Paradise

In 2018, https://soundcloud.com/innate-recordings  unveiled its debut release – a widely acclaimed EP that drew together four varied slabs of deep electronic music from a mix of unsung heroes and underground stalwarts, including Mark Hand, Lerosa and the man behind the blog that spawned the label, Owain K. The label’s second release naturally treads a similar path, offering up a trio of cuts that further emphasize Innate’s desire to champion futurist electronic music shot through with warmth, humanity and machine soul.

Heading up the A-side is Bristol veteran A Sagittariun, whose psychedelic and otherworldly take on techno, ambient and IDM has previously appeared on Idle Hands, Hype_Ltd and, most frequently, his Elastic Dreams label. “Proof” is an altogether deeper and more far-sighted affair than much of his forthright and intense output, with ghostly lead lines, melancholic electronics and spacey chords stretching out across a bustling groove rich in hazy analogue bass and crunchy machine drums. 

  

Side B is headed up by key Innate family member Gilbert. His contribution to the label’s first EP, “Birds of Paradise”, was simply stunning and rightly picked up plaudits and praise from an impressive selection of DJs and journalists. “Polynoid” is another impressive outing from the Bristol-based producer, with ear-catching riffs, acid lines and melodic movements rising and falling above a wonderfully retro-futurist, Chicago-influenced groove. 

  

It’s accompanied on the flipside by “Our Love For Music”, which marks the first Innate appearance from Final Chapter boss and sometime Rawax contributor Sean Dixon. Like much of the Swedish producer’s output, the track is melodious and intergalactic in tone, combining the widescreen vision of Detroit’s early techno pioneers with the jacking, sweat-drenched percussive intensity of Chicago’s finest.

‘We’re Going Deep’ is a new label run by an old head- Paul Wise, better known as Placid to many who inhabit the realms of underground House and Techno.
Born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of deep electronic rhythms coupled with a thirst for collecting records since 1988, the label mission is all about releasing new music for the dance floor, front room or even just your headphones.
Rather than staying too hung up on the past, Paul’s reputation for digging deep into Acid, Electro, Techno, Deep House and even the odd slice of downtempo precedes him, as he readies the second instalment on his imprint. Picking up where WGD 001 left off, he’s both humbled and pleased to be able to invite 4 more exceptional artists to show off their finest waveforms.
Volume 2 starts the dance with a sterling contribution from Dublin’s very own machine maestro Cignol, “Night Time Traverse”. Proving once again why his flair for combining tight metronomic drums, wistful melody, blissed out strings with a twist of 303 is second to none: unmistakably tight, unmistakably good. Followed by some heavy head nodding action courtesy of new kid on the block, Armec, he’s already scored 2 fantastic releases under his belt. Fully repping the next generation of mancunian machine enthusiasts, he delves deep into the seedy underworld of deepest and darkest electro with ice cold aplomb on “Celestial Mechanics”.
Hit the flipside and you’ll find Acid aficionado Jared Wilson (who should be no stranger to most) leading the charge as he whips up a storm with a tweaked 303 takeover, led by a mesmerising chord that runs throughout – he works his magic once again in fine style. Last but not least, the dulcet tones of Bristol’s very own best kept secret Gilbert lands another sumptuously deep slab of techno with “Signs of Hope”. Leading with a pleasantly addictive bassline, this beautifully structured whistful symphony oozes warmth and tranquillity as he takes a trip to the light fantastic.
