One of the bright talent emerging from the current Netherlands‘ electronic underground scene is the German and Amsterdam-based, ‘fetish-inclined’, vocalist and performer Sophie du Palais ((Pinkman, Dekmantel Recordings)) also known as “Vrouwe Fataal”. She presents debut solo LP ‘Endurance of Pain is the Power of Being’

Across six tracks, Du Palais unravels a potent signature, driven by fierce, imperious Anglo-Germanic vocals and eclectic, dissonant sounds. Connecting techno, EBM, acid and electro with vestiges of dub and experimental electronics, on ‘Endurance of Pain…’ Du Palais conjures an abrasive, intoxicating depiction of lust, hedonism, technological obsession and millennial alienation.

With the cruising techno pop menace of ‘Slow Steady Cum’, Du Palais introduces a nocturnal underworld. The descent is intensified by the mania and murk of ‘Glazed Disco Ball’ – a suspenseful dose of guttural low end, scowling spoken words, and crude drum machine clatter; if Gudrun Gut fronted Suicide. Then ‘Boys Tears’ elaborates on the dread and the sleaze with a horror show of gurgling synthesis, drubbing percussion and dissolute enunciations, halfway between John Carpenter and Unit Moebius.

From there ‘Up To No Good’ brings proceedings into a severe form of heat and frenzy, outlaying an exchange of raw jackhammer rhythms and vociferous punk chants that recalls Liaisons Dangereuses’ timeless underground classic ‘Los Niños del Parque’ if remade for 2021. ‘Smash The Mirror’ then finds room for scintillating dub recurrence and freakish machine funk before Sophie concludes the set with the sardonic electro-clash anthemics of ‘2001’, a provocative exploration of self, communication, and compulsion in the digital era. Miss Kittin meets Dopplereffekt for a technoid bonfire of the vanities.

‘Endurance of Pain…’ finds Sophie Du Palais seizing an uncompromising sense of style and intensity, an emergent new artist navigating a merciless, pleasure-seeking existence, from club to bedroom to screen, facing it all down with a cold glare, ready to light the fuse.

I wrote "Skyscrapers" on one of my long trips to a far away country. It is a love song. It is about missing someone very much even if you don't always get along and agree on things.  In moments like that you just want to run away .. as fast as you can .. only to feel like you want to come back 5 minutes later..

Man Power's Me Me Me label presents debut release of New York-based Brazilian artist, Deo'Jorge this July, backed with remixes from Prins Thomas and Hardway Bros. A well-known figure in New York’s infamous underground off-location party scene, Deo'Jorge also runs the international O/NDA event series, which moved to a virtual presence last year to keep people dancing through lockdown. A friend of Man Power's since first booking him to play a street party in Rio De Janeiro in the middle of the last decade, it seems only fitting that Me Me Me should get to present the artist's inaugural musical offering. His 'Robotic Souls' EP comes backed with remixes from two bonafide legends in the forms of Norwegian artist Prins Thomas and Hardway Bros, aka Sean Johnston of A Love From Outer Space notoriety. 'Sparking Plugs' begins the EP in Me Me Me's emblematic cosmic fashion as the revolving synths fuse delicately with the deep, swirling grooves before 'Do Androids Dream' bristles with otherworldly charm – floaty pads and exquisite drums balance together graciously. Up next, 'Pick Your Dead Self' continues the upbeat vibrancy with dynamic drums and dreamy atmospheres taking the focus whilst the prolific artist Prins Thomas' remix of 'Sparking Plugs' adds simmering arpeggios and chugging melodies to this space disco interpretation. UK's Sean Johnston, renowned for his work with the late Andrew Weatherall under the A Love From Outer Space guise, rounds off proceedings with beautifully throbbing sub-bass, classy melodies and echoing dub effects that provide warmth and blissfulness. Deo'Jorge ‘Robotic Souls’ EP is out on Me Me Me Recordings on 16th July 2021.

Throughout the streets, food vendors and shop fronts stocked delicious snacks; there was something for everyone. The sweet smells and aromas filled nostrils, luring passersby off the road and through the doors. You were spoilt for choice: temptations were everywhere and they came in all shapes and sizes, sampling more than one place was the only option, otherwise indecisiveness would certainly be the dish of the day.

French producer Golden Bug makes his return to La Belle Records for the first time in six years for a new album Piscolabis. Marking his fourth long player, the release is a deep dive into psychedelic electronica and features a stellar cast of collaborators from regulars pals The Liminañas, to singer Vega Voga and producer Tim Glass. The 11 tracks weave between different strains and sounds that Golden Bug has experimented with over the years: there's psych pop and dub sitting next to ritualistic rhythms and kraut-influenced electronica - like its Spanish translation, on Piscolabis there's a tasty snack for everyone.
