Sense Appeal

Always Thinkin'

Escaping the dreary-eyed confines of his bedroom, he’s met with the nourishing intensity of natural light and indecisive housemates, at a loss with what to do with their day. The sun’s glow, infiltrating through skylights and illuminating parts of the house that haven’t been seen in years, prompts an ingenious idea. After a few minutes of logistical debate, a conveyor belt of tables, chairs and crates of beer swings into motion, passed excitedly out the window and up a rickety pair of ladders leading to the roof. Like sun-starved plants ascending to the tree line. Recharged with optimism, they watched the world from the elevated safety of the sky. 

The transatlantic-dyad of London’s No Bad Days and Montreal's Arbutus Records, join forces for the release of ‘Sense Appeal’, the sophomore EP of Toronto’s own Graham Van Pelt. The release features two tracks of Chicago-infused house on it’s A-side, and three especially transformative remixes on the inverse. Our pick, Yu Su’s flip of ‘Always Thinkin’', is an exercise in mediative techno bliss, featuring layered production underpinned by eerie vocal samples and chest-rattling bass.

Ivy Barkakati is a Barcelona-based dancefloor doyen with music out on Hospital Productions and Modern Obscure Music, and vocals gracing tracks by Cardopusher, Furious Frank / Mind Dance, and Roza Terenzi. She recently teamed up with Venezuelan producer Phran to form IVAN, and on their Delicious Fantasy EP they make soundtrack music for transcendent dancing experiences. She celebrates the imminent release of remixes to that EP with a mix full of soulful delights.

Albrecht La’Brooy’s Alex Albrecht returns under his Melquíades guise this December, with a new EP entitled ‘Further Afield’ for San Diego’s Bouquet Records.

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia and one half of the Albrecht La’Brooy duo, Alex Albrecht has been showcasing his unique twist on contemporary deep house, ambient and electronica over the past decade. Releasing music from his collaborative project on esteemed imprint Apollo/R&S, his own acclaimed Analogue Attic label and Scissor & Thread under his Melquíades alias, here we see the moniker continue with some fresh material for Bouquet. The project we’re told by Albrecht is ‘’based around field recordings from time on the road - feelings of movement, introspection, appreciation for the surroundings. Meditation and improvisation.’’, Bouquet was drawn to the project due to the story and translation of it into sonics.

Opener ‘Denver chimes’ utilises field recording of a suburban walk during a tour mid-last year. The chimes were hanging outside someone's house, next to a tyre swing. it was summer and the city seemed small, nestled there in between the mountains. It was the last stop and Albrecht tried to capture the feeling of awe you get when you drive through the Rockies or the anticipation of flying. ‘Upstate Dream’ follows and was built around a road trip out of town and an intense thunderstorm followed by dense humidity. Alex watched it roll through the gorge and over the incredible sculptures before running through torrential rain back to the car. After the downpour the sun came out and he sat by the river, this composition reflects on this moment.

‘Further Afield’ related to the weeks before the above in Berlin and the shows played there, the title is inspired by Günter Grass's political novel, Too Far Afield. Rounding things out is ‘Sprinkler’ which took inspiration from recollections of the Australian bush and the summer festivals in Victoria. Similar to upstate dream it was the diffused and surreal memories of back home mixed with the excitement of being on the road.

Lithuanian, Vilnius-based Ramūnas aka midnattssoula has already done one mix for Clandestino mix series, but this was about 4 years ago and then he was working with another project. He's been running his own radio show/party series/record label Where Were We? for 3 years now and both Joe Morris and Nick Smith had a chance to be a part of this journey. 

WWW just dropped its third release and this time it's featuring up-and-coming Frenchman Blaise Balda. There's also a remix pack coming mid-March from the likes of Romain FX, REES, Sauvage World (from Slow Motion fame), and Lithuanian Italo talent Black Feeling. Several of these tracks from both the original EP and a forthcoming remix pack is in the guest mix which showcases Ramunas' passion for more uptempo, dancefloor-oriented Italo house and synth-wave burners. It's totally OK to dance alone, it's time to heal your wounded soul! ; )
