Live recording from our set last weekend in Urban Spree in Berlin. So nice to play in front of a crowd and it was a pleasure to see so many old friends and making new ones on the dance floor! Even big man @fhionn swung by and played a few. Unfortunately I (Aidan) got a new recording device and the cables I got for it were a bit MEH but we've managed to salvage most of the set for listening back too! Highly ELEGAL material indeed!! From what we can tell its a rag-tag collection of obscure and hard to find tracks from the years 92/93/94. Featuring melodic breakbeat from early San Franciscan rave act Enlight, moody Techno from James Bernard’s Cybertrax project (the track in question here having only seen the light of day on the 1994 ‘The Secret Life of Trance Volume 3’ compilation) and epic Trance-breaks from Germany producer Utasia. Good news! Pacific Rhythm is once again connecting game with one of Toronto's most promising young duos, Active Surplus. Active Surplus is the collaborative project from Evan Vincent (AKA Emissive) and Ian Syrett, who also appear on this past winter's fourth volume of Rhythms Of The Pacific.

Their new self-titled EP is their love letter to the house music sound that first sprouted from the West Coast. It's laid-back, groovy and touched with lovely instrumentation, like the plucked strings on "Meera," a heartfelt tribute to a loved one. "Meera" and the billowing groove of "Ambrosia" might remind you of early Pacific Rhythm releases, with dainty arrangements and chords that waft across the rhythm section.

But Active Surplus put their own spin on things. The EP was heavily inspired by the stuttering drum patterns of Baltimore club, which undergird each track in subtle but noticeable ways, making the grooves that much skippier and slippier. "Yeye" calls to mind the feeling of early Walt J material and delivers a devastating earworm that will stick with you long after the lights have come on at the end of a late night Dance Opportunity, while the looped woodwinds and cool-blue keyboards offer a sweet melodic hook on the irresistible "One Beyond." There's a confident, naturalistic quality to these rippling grooves and silky sounds, which the duo credit to an obsession with water. After all, in their words, "we might not live by the ocean, but we're all H20 on the inside."

Active Surplus - Ambrosia

There were strange creatures which floated and wandered beneath the surface of the water as he looked down from his cliff and into the rock pool below. All sorts of unusual life forms danced in the murky depths, an underwater extravaganza bursting with wildlife and wonder. It was beautiful. Radiant colours were perplexing as the sun shimmered and shone down upon the rippling pool. The wind roared in his ears as he looked back along the shore, for he was out there in the middle of nowhere, the sea was his. 

Lou Karsh is set to release a new EP via X-Kalay, a record label which never ceases to disappoint. "Lifeforms" is an eclectic mix of club ready material, however we were most drawn to the melodic twists and the deep brooding pads found on the title track.

Butter Sessions tees up a flawless duo, Naarm (Melbourne) based artists Mousse(Simon Barry) and Trevor(James Vinciguerra) for a split 7" release with a screen-printed sleeve. Both artists add the release to their highly-regarded archives. On the A-Side, Mousse submits Northstar. This is his second contribution to Butter Sessions; a robust follow up to his funky explorations showcased on the Bungalow Classics12". On the flipside, Trevor follows up his 2019Becoming a Bed LP(Alter)with the astute Darron.


As one can expect, Mousse's Northstar is soaked in infectious house sequencing and sci-fi hypnobeat, while laced with dialogue extracted from the 1986 anime film Fist of the Northstar. The B-Side track Darron sees visual artist Trevor jumping from his contribution to the record sleeve into the record itself. The piece emits glitchy electro bound in coarse breaks but with just the right amount of room to breathe. As two punchy aligned compositions, this split release introduces a powerful pairing.

The jelly was soft and malleable, it flexed and danced beneath the glow of the warm strobe. The wall illuminated the empty room, a golden throbbing glass case within which the spongy substance weaved and wandered. This was lava and the onlookers were mesmerized by it's complex shape and wonderful flexibility. It throbbed and bounced from side to side, soft yet powerful...

Gramrcy appears on a new compilation set for release by Hot Concept. The release is in aid of a great cause called habibi.works, a charity and institution designed to help and support refugees on the ground in Greece. The compilation itself is stellar and also features music from the likes of Yr Lovely Dead Moon, Discovery Zone and more.
