After his debut LP ‘Temmuz’, released at the beginning of last year, Houschyar is back on Macadam Mambo with his new album: a less danceable but more personal opus. Being locked up on the rooftops of Istanbul, Houschyar repurposed a satellite dish, making use of its perfectly round and concave shape to create strange metallic-sounding percussive loops which he painted with sonic atmospheres that contained diverse shades of blue. ‘Mavi’ is an introspective pallet of emotions condensed into 7 hybrid compositions highly improvised which divagate into a very jazzy modern state of mind, jamming with pianos, electronic organs and rhythm boxes to produce another type of spiritual music that sounds absolutely timeless. In a very prolific year - with his release with DJ Sofa and Okay Temiz on Music from Memory and the initial EP of Raphael Kosmos’ newborn label Späti Records -, Marius Houschyar leaves no doubt about the level of his talent and him being part of a new generation of artists to keep a close eye on. PREMIERE: Houschyar - Temassiz [Macadam Mambo]

The fifth Camel Ride delivery is brought by Justas Jelisejevas (@justas_j), a Vilnius-based producer, music digger and journalist. His passion for music and genre-bending varieties is reflected in the immaculately crafted selections, encompassing imaginative soundscapes, atmospheric emotions and subtly hypnotic dancefloor vibrations.

Safe to say, over the last years the beguiling selections of Justas in various venues and festivals have left no one indifferent. Moreover, he co-curated Calypso Magazine, an online journal with a number of interviews with prominent artists in his books. Becoming deeply ingrained in the Lithuanian scene, recently he started to produce his own sounds. This year saw the release of his debut EP titled Animaux, a six-track release that explores and interprets wild animals through the means of electronic music. Justas also co-runs a monthly radio show “Puppystyle” (@puppystylelove) at the newly emerged hub Radio Vilnius. Aside from music activities, Justas draws animal illustrations with oil pastels or ink.

#005 Camel Ride with Jelisejev

Tagliabue releases his debut mini-album Ambiente Sonoro on Elephant Gait Music with six contemporary tracks deeply inspired by the reality that surrounds us.

Imagination has no limits, when stimulated by sounds that slowly shade and snake in the listener’s conscious.

Library music is a genre that introduced an extensive use of electronic sounds and high techniques in music making, these experimental and psychedelic compositions enriched Italian radio, film and television soundtracks during the 70s. Artists like Daniela Casa, Egisto Macchi and Piero Umiliani provided scores for documentaries, educational projects and other sound installations; they influenced and helped the Milan based artist to produce his debut mini-album “Ambiente Sonoro”. His experience as a music selector and his previous productions anticipate the character of this new contemporary work. A record that cannot be placed in a specific genre. Ancestral rhythms, post-industrial waves, apocalyptic chants and modular drones, suggest a mental projection into a new planetary system consisting of six bodies with different landscapes, kept in orbit by a cosmic sound perturbation. A dreamy state of emotional, protracted and reflective abandonment.

Tagliabue is a sound engineer, selector and music producer based in Milan. His meticulous musical research reflects an eclectic style characterized by an Italian attitude which is the expression of the love for his land and its traditions. Tracing a music-temporal path that comes from folk sounds mixed with contemporary electronic, he takes inspiration from the environment that surrounds him and breaks down the boundaries between the genres blending its musical influences and reinterpreting its origins with a propensity towards the future.

There was a great sense of loss in the room, an unspoken tension that hung in the air. Around the church small groups huddled, elsewhere individuals sat alone, cautiously looking over their shoulders. They had vowed not to be speculative, to keep their minds open and be vulnerable to whatever may come their way. Today they would contact their loved ones, lost ones, and give themselves up to the unknown and the unexpected. 

Keys is a new collaborative project from German native Benedikt Frey and producer Chris Cox, who have joined forces for eight tracks that hypnotise and intrigue. In the words of Berlin-based label R.i.O. who bring this moody release direct to your ears, "allow Keys to seal you in their infinite vacuum of flirtatious melancholia."

In 2015, JD Twitch's Autonomous Africa label released Youth Stand Up!, a triangular recording project hatched at Glasgow’s Green Door Studio that brought together young musicians from Belize, Ghana and Glasgow for ten tracks of cross-cultural collaboration. The result was an infectious cocktail of traditional Caribbean and West African rhythms, hip hop, highlife and Glaswegian post-punk, featuring contributions from Optimo Music regulars Golden Teacher and Whilst, among others.

The proceeds from that project went directly back to the youth groups in Ghana and Belize, helping the musicians from Ghana’s Tafi Cultural Institute build a recording studio and performance space in their village.

Two years later, a grant from Creative Scotland’s Open Fund spawned the sequel to Youth Stand Up!: Youth Stand United, recorded both at Green Door and at TCI’s new studio in Ghana (with Golden Teacher’s Laurie Pitt at the controls), and mixed by Green Door’s Stuart and Emily Evans.

Youth Stand United features backing tracks contributed by members of Golden Teacher, Pu$$y Mothers, Whilst, Kaputt, and Sordid Sound System, with vocals provided by the musicians from TCI. Over 6 songs, it oscillates from the left-field disco of Diloeshutubui to the Juju-electro odyssey of Gidi to the Joe-Meek-meets-William Onyeabor space age gospel pop of Nobody Knows.

Proceeds from Youth Stand United will go towards a scholarship fund for musicians from Tafi Atome, Ghana.

Hypnotechno is Pho Bho's second release made and arranged by Matteo Coffetti, the label's co-founder along with Federico Spini.

The record's distinctive feature is its original fusion between ethnic samples beaten by violent kicks and sharp snares from the rawest techno. What it generates it's a unique rhythm-flow ideal for the dancefloor.

The collaboration with Filippo Zenna is the result of the two artist's anxieties and fears over a past that it's no longer here and tomorrow hat stravise to come.
