Diskotopia is extremely proud to kick-start 2019 with Girar, a four-track EP of new kaleidoscopic productions from Lisbon-born, London-based producer Silvestre. 

Silvestre is no stranger to Diskotopia, this being his third release with the label, debuting with the gritty noise-and-thump Frank Pike EP in 2014, and following that up with the more buoyant, latinate Floresta EP in 2016. In addition to producing, Silvestre also co-runs the Padre Himalya imprint, putting out 2018’s critically acclaimed Focus EP from tombak virtuoso Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, Renato’s 2016 Alo Alo, plus his own Sport Theories and All The Things 12”s.

With the Girar EP, Silvestre continues to embrace the sonic culture-frictions between his home country and his adopted one. In doing so, he has created a pan-continental sound in which coarse-grained Ibero-percussive threads intertwine with digi-tropical synthetic tapestries; testimony of a truly unique artist in the modern current of electronic music. 

Opening with the bubbling Ir a Sagres, Silvestre constructs a basement-born psychotropic rhumba groove, strapped with fluttering arpeggios, nimble conga tappings and a firmly locked-in bassline. Following on, Deptford Bus is a woozier, mid-tempo spliff-house roller, stripped of the flora to leave a simple set up of haunted pads, crisp toms, and a deep sense of unease.

RC Surfer is perhaps the finest example of a soundclash of reggaeton, shoegaze and dub put to wax in recent memory. Here, Silvestre provides an ethereal soundscape with images of late-summer wining in city squares materializing through the cracks of the stoic riddims.

The Girar EP rounds out with the pseudo-rapturous Everybody Is Happy, a slice of breakbeat-house that nods lovingly to the halcyon days of rave past whilst holding a mirror at the present day with an unabating painted-on smile

Freda & Jackson is the uncategorizable joint project of two musical omnivores - blending house, jazz, downtempo, broken beat and a few secret herbs & spices into a unique mode of self expression that transcends any genre boundaries. Their contribution “Flux” is a scattershot sample collage of diced breaks, booming voices and spiralling echoes that drift outward and coalesce together into a hallucinatory miasma as they’re dubbed in and out of the mix.

We are proud to showcase more Bay Area family with the release of a new EP by Doc Sleep @docsleep who cut her chops as a DJ in San Francisco’s vibrant scene the past decade. In 2016 she made the move to Berlin and became a resident of Room 4 Resistance. Since 2013, she's been the co-owner of @jacktonerecords which specializes in techno, ambient, and experimental electronics. In 2016/2017 she released her first 12's on the Hot Mass-affiliated Detour Records and Bottom Forty. She also co-wrote a track with Bezier and Nicole Ginelli, titled “Stranger,” that we released on the ‘Primes’ EP in 2017. Her latest release, ‘Your Ruling Planet’, was released on Jacktone in March 2019.
We first heard “Creme Fraiche” on Doc’s soundcloud page and begged to release it. The track has the feel-good vibes you get on early morning dancefloors as things are winding down or up. Paired on the A-side is an updated version of the pulsating dark jam “Never Eating Again” that originally appeared on ‘Run The Length Of Your Wildness V.2’ and, like that compilation, proceeds from this track will be donated to Ghost Ship Fire victim Cherushii's family. On the B-side are two remixes from close friends of Doc. First up is a fresh breakbeat remix from Violet @violet : DJ, producer, boss of Naive records, co-founder of Rádio Quântica, and mina resident shaking up Lisbon's nightlife. Second is Berlin-based producer and fellow R4R resident, rRoxymore @rroxymore  who presents an innovative remix of future-facing techno and bass variations adding her own vocals on top. For this release we’ve teamed up with Jacktone to release a cassette version, our first in this format, featuring two peak-time bonus tracks. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy is housed in jacket designed by Eloise Leigh with neon pink and lavender gradients echo morning sunrises with a collage of dreamy elements using a photo by Doc of Club Toilet in Detroit.

She rubbed her eyes and squinted around the room, her gaze still clouded in the early morning haze. As her vision cleared, she realised she didn't recognise her surroundings. The room felt vaguely familiar, as if she had visited it a life time ago, but she didn't live here. At least she was pretty certain she didn't. How had she come to be here? As she rose from the bed, a picture on the mantelpiece caught her eye. As she approached it, she gulped. There she was, clear as day... Her own image smiling back at her.

Following her debut last year with the razor sharp Womanhood, Orphan. Records co-founder Klein Zage returns with an EP on her own imprint, inspired by her beloved service industry. The three tracks on Tip Me Baby One More Time move through the motions; the A-Side provides a snapshot of Zage 'clocked in' while the B-Side - our pick, 'I'm Almost Certain That I'm Here' featuring fellow Orphan co-founder Joey G ii - takes things into more introspective realms, with twinkling dubwise electronics layered with Zage's wistful yet commanding vocals.

All profits from the release will be donated to the Restaurant Worker's Community Foundation Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund as well as New York's 'Service Worker's Coalition', in light of the impact that the Covid-19 crisis is having on the restaurant industry.
