@Blaq-Numbers (and sometimes Whyte Numbers) is back with its fourth artist EP and, this time around, they’ve landed a low-key 5-tracker from the increasingly in-demand @Jesse-Bru. It would seem every underground label on its come-up is after the Berlin-based producer and the man’s output is nothing short of impressive. 'How u really feel' rounds out another strong year for the artist whose discography already includes releases on Heart to Heart, Axe on Wax, Piff, and a full-length album on Audio Parallax.

The title track starts the EP off with an unsettling vocal sample before getting into a swinging drum machine groove alongside a distinctly cheerier, driving chord progression. This won’t be the only interesting juxtaposition on the EP as standout track 'Turn you loose' also begins with an unnerving vocal sample — albeit a much longer, darker one before turning into a hard grooving edit-style track that Bru is known for. Whether this works as intended will be left up to the listener.

The @Folamour remix flips the underlying chord progression and brings it to the front of the mix — amping up the energy a few notches in the process. Loose percussion and live drum samples contrast the beefed-up chords and, together, make for a remix that stays true to the original.

Hans Peeman, perhaps better known as Junktion or as one half of Fouk with label mate and friend Daniel Leseman, also has another side project. New Franklin Theory is his lesser known alias, one focusing a bit less on sampling and more on melodic explorations, with a lot more synth work and instrumentation. He's only released under the moniker once before, a 2 track 10" on his own native Outplay Records that perhaps went a little bit under-appreciated. Now he's back once again on the label with a 5 track mini album of sorts, entitled "Chemical Boogie", to really showcase what he can do.

Peeman's signature percussion is perhaps best heard on the opener, Andromeda Beach, a funk and boogie fuelled jam that's closest to what we've come to know him for. Our premiere today and the A2 on the record, Homeward, features some fantastically spacey cosmic pads and a rumbling bass, lending it a bittersweet, introspective sound. Closing off the first side of the record is Afterburner, an uptempo groover with some addictive synthesized horn-like melodies. Ladies and gentlemen, we have liftoff.

On the flip, the B1, In Orbit, takes you for a ride. The funky bassline and deep rhodes chords paired with the interplanetary atmospheres and effects do the title justice. Finally, The Holtzman Effect, named after a fictional scientific phenomenon, caps off the EP with a hooking subterranean bass that sends you wiggling your butt straight into alien territory.It's refreshing to see a producer so well known for a particular sound continue to explore new avenues and evolve as personal tastes change and mature, but still retain some of that flavour that made his music so irresistible in the first place.

PREMIERE: New Franklin Theory - Homeward

The maiden release on Edinburgh-based Poolside Records comes from Italian producer MarBlu, who's been making waves - pun intended - alongside Tom Jarmey lately. 'Cherry Wine' and it's lingering trumpets turned out to be the perfect match for this sunny afternoon here in Brussels.

Marblu's 'Waves' EP will be available through the Poolside Records Bandcamp page at the start of March.

The flip side offers a dancefloor oriented, infectious tune named “Lawless”. Could this be a reference to himself, a clue to the original sample or both? You take the guess.

Beneath the cloak of darkness his imagination ran wild as fantasies and electric visions flickered and flashed between his ears. These were dreams from another dimension, images being blasted into his awareness from a place far beyond the realms of our understanding and comprehension. Careering between the stars he dreamt of wild expeditions and cosmic adventures as the elements of a galaxy flashed and fluttered in his dense, populated periphery. This was freedom. 

Mathew Ferness features on a new split EP being released by Live Ones, the record label run by London based producer and dj, Lorca. The release features appearances from Windows, Intr0beatz, Keith Lorraine and Lorca himself.

In the final curation of 2020 we raise a glass to Takis Shelter with a diverse collection of jams showcasing everything from blissed out jazz, funked up house, rich balearic trips and a little sprinkle of joy inducing disco. These come from a selection of our good friends across the planet who have kindly contributed their tracks to make this release happen, a big thanks to the time and effort that everybody has put into this.

100% of the proceeds from this compilation will go directly to Takis Shelter. As someone who has their roots in the music scene, Takis turned his attention from partying all night whilst running his own nightclub, to well, partying all night with more than 450 of dogs and cats that he saved from landfills and rubbish dumps in Crete. After giving up everything he owned to open his shelter, he nearly had to give up the refuge but donations made it possible for him to go on.

This compilation is a nod to all the incredible, selfless work that Takis has put into caring for these animals and will go towards ensuring they are looked after, fed and can eventually find their way to a new loving home. To find out more and donate directly go to takisshelter.org/
