They lived in darkness most of the time, it was all they'd ever known. Here, the sun only shone for a few hours a day before night took hold and they were bathed in the dark once again. It drained the energy from the village, flattening the mood and dampening people's spirit. On the other hand, the light brought with it hope, hope that someday they'd find something beyond this existence - and they'd cling on to that feeling for as long as they had to.

Ransom Note Records alumni Natasha Bai is starting her own label, Друг (Droog) Records. For the first release, the DJ and producer welcomes Oberton, the musical pairing of Eldar Mukhomedzyanov and Alexei Vainer whose output matches infectious electronic beats with spoken word. С​в​е​т​о​т​е​н​ь, is made up of three tracks that introduce us to their signature style. On our pick, closing track 'Оторопь', the duo ruminate on the "anticipation of fear, a feeling of incoming conjectures and experiences", and tells the tale of the disappointment that comes from a one-sided love story, but in the face of rejection always continuing to have hope.

Our first release of the year sees Kincaid land on Redstone Press with an expansive four-tracker. Having recently relocated to Berlin, Joe’s first work since moving sets out his direction musically as well as geographically.

“Don’t Get No Sun” kicks off proceedings with an anxious energy that bubbles away under the surface throughout. Haunting ambience, warped vocals and staggering textures finally give way to heavy 4/4 pressure.

“On Hands” dispenses with nuance in favour of scalpel-like percussion and UK-inflected vocal snapshots, creating a fast-paced cut with just enough head-frying synth lines to keep you dizzy.

“Gutter” takes a calmer, more measured approach but with the same focus, incisive drum work and vocal chopping but aimed at those loose moments at the start and end of the night.

“Getting More Sun” closes out the EP with more intimacy and space. Ethereal synths replace vocals and club energy in this more tranquil number. Perfect for that post-club wind-down.

SoundUnbound Recordings brings together artists from the east of The Netherlands for a Various Artists vinyl release.

The room was full of unfamiliar faces and unfriendly strangers, as soon as he entered he wanted to leave. He was sure he’d know at least a few people, that they’d welcome him with open arms and bring him into the fold. The reality was much different though. It left a sour taste in his mouth and made his stomach squirm uncontrollably. Everyone here already had their inner circles and their close-knit friendship groups, why would they need to embrace anybody new? 

SoundUnbound Recordings boss Fentom is shining a light on the talents in his local stomping ground in the east of The Netherlands. Featuring music HGHR LVLS, Bastian Benjamin, Nerds With Acid, |grens|, Odaira and Oosterse Lach, and the label head himself, the VA vinyl release explores the fringes of acid, electro, techno and bass, with the aim of showing the world what’s happening in this lesser know underground scene.
