Seven years into its celebrated journey, Life and Death assembles its third and most adventurous compilation to date - Displaced Soundtracks.

For the first instalment in a new series, DJ Tennis has given free rein to some of his most trusted contemporaries, enabling many of today’s most respected dance music producers to display their hidden talents as composers. Gathering music from a long-aborted film, the collection stands as another bastion of Life and Death’s perpetual evolution.

Duncan Gray embraces dissonance, Black Merlin, Appleblim and Artefakt go interstellar and Fango channels post-punk squat music. Hades Rocket showcases the expertly-sequenced synth work that has graced Simian Mobile Disco’s illustrious career, while Redshape revisits all the right sides of 80’s Wave and Library music. Danny Daze and synth-savant KINK embrace non-standard tempi with great success, while Axel Boman delivers sitar-laced gospelhouse without a bass drum. Elsewhere, your favourite producer’s favourite producer, Stimming, team’s up with pianist Lambert and the pair learn to fly.

Inspired and challenging, Life and Death ventures into their eighth year confidently, constantly evolving without compromise.

Optimo Music launches a new digital label; Optimo Music Digital Danceforce, or just plain Digital Danceforce for simplicity. As the turnaround on getting vinyl made was getting ever longer, I wanted an outlet that could be a lot leaner and meaner and get releases out in a far faster amount of time. Some of these may end up being vinyl releases if there is a demand but they will be launched to the world as digital only.

First up is four tracks of sleazy, psyched-out electronics from Belgium’s Strapontin. Self-described as Cold disco, slow techno, queer thoughts, it was instantly falling in love with these that led to the decision to get these out to the world ASAP. Tried and tested. Dancefloor action guaranteed.

Self describing this release, Noo call it Cosmic electro funk with a touch of acid. Channelling the Noosphere, years 81-84 this time, maybe up to 89.

Road To Yuzu

Road To Yuzu originates from a long drive to the east of Holland. I was on my way to a place called Yuzu after a long day in the studio, where I was stuck in an old flow and sound. I found myself re-evaluating this flow and it felt like I was ready for something new. This drive somewhat changed the sound I wanted to focus on, giving me new energy and inspiration. Road to Yuzu, a melancholic driven breakbeat track, represents this turning point. 


Phasing In

The acid elements characterize the over-rushed society we live in, where we forget to stand still at times. The kalimba percussion and synthesizers represents the opposite; feeling grounded and conscious. With Phasing in, I tried to combine these feelings to express the contradiction of the two.


Anxious World

The last track of the EP starts with dreamy synths slowly evolving into a heavy leading bass with breakbeat elements. The short didgeridoo cuts and the use of the old Yamaha SY22 synthesizer rounded up the track.


Alteration EP 

With the three tracks taken together I tried to give an output on all different thoughts going on in the studio while making music. I’m always in search to keep the balance between dancefloor movement and calmness. It’s a process where everything is subject to change and alteration.

The luxurious venue was busy with some of the most famous, pretty faces in the ecletic world of art. Red linen curtains hung atop the windows, concealing the darkness outside and blurring the lines between night and day. Candles flickered softly upon each table and guests talked in hushed voices and fancy masks. It was a somewhat strange affair, a distinctly erotic mood but with a poignant hint of sadness. Incense burned with a musky warmth and there was a stale scent which hung in the air. The party was alive with wrong'uns. 

Niv Ast is set to release a new EP on London based label Snap, Crackle & Pop - the longstanding party series has become a firm favourite in the capital. The EP features a remix from Mr TC, a fierce talent who has released previously on the likes of Optimo Music, Neubau and Hard Fist.
