Manuel Castaneda a.k.a. Rigopolar is now based in Miami. He mixes up Italo, disco, techno and wave music on labels like Duro, Aeon, Nazca and Tom Tom Disco. He is a mainstay of the dark disco scene and always takes dance floors on a trip through space and time with his rough-edged but majestically melodic sounds. His new label will be a place for his most comprehensive musical statements yet, and the first offering is an instant classic of the genre.

Opener 'Purple Drive' is an expansive astral disco cut with sweeping guitar riffs and dazzling disco-fried synth work. It's chuggy and packed with stylish reverb and a well-treated vocal. Next is the twinkling 'Inversus Totalis,' which melts swaggering and dubbed out drums with twitchy synths into a sleek and far-sighted dance floor destroyer in the mold of ALFOS. The brilliant 'Melting Moon' is another dark disco gem that is quick to lock you in with its tinny percussion and rugged arps. They're backed with coarse hits and a pulsing bassline that forever forges forwards through the stars. 'Saturnia' closes down with mind-melting synth loops and prickly hits. The drums are firmly rooted, while splashy cymbals and vocoder vocals add that deep space feel.
A second EP is already in the works for later in the year and is sure to confirm this is an essential new label for dark disco heads.

PREMIERE: DJ Steaw - Dance To The Rhythm

Following the success of Mexican sensation Iñigo Vontier’s “Dune Dune” EP, which Optimo Music released in early 2021, exactly two years later we are delighted to release a follow up EP by him. "Setsi" has been thoroughly road tested these last few months and comes with an Optimo Music dancefloor guarantee. We asked Iñigo to tell us a little about this release -


"Setsi" is an EP that comes from experimentation with samples and the idea of keeping things simple but memorable. The track "Setsi" starts the EP and is groovy and loopy keeping a mood all through while weird synths and cowbells come in to add flavour to the journey. Next we have "Weirdo" which takes the synths to a next level while still keeping the groove smooth. "Mental Letal" keeps those weird synths going and makes for a mental progressive anthem for the dancefloor. To finish, the EP we have "Oh Yeah" with a funky deep bass, hypnotic synths and vocals that recall Yello in a way.

We’re happy to announce to familiar faces back to the mothership: Chloe Raunet aka C.A.R. has been a long time friend and made her first appearance on the label with Maceo Plex on “Mirror Me”. Dj and producer extraordinaire Patrice Bäumel certainly doesn’t need much introduction. “Four Down” shows the duo in a rowdy mood. There’s a very welcome punk-ish attitude to the song that is set to brush today’s polished dancefloors against the grain. Here’s what C.A.R. has to say in her own words: “Some collaborations are meant to be. I first met Patrice at Trouw over a decade ago and we instantly hit it off. When he sent me this idea back in lockdown, it wasn’t something I could come up with musically, but words came easy and the song wrote itself. Bouncing ideas back and forth through the ether doesn’t always work, but when you just get each other, distance doesn’t matter and stepping outside your comfort zone can bring about the best, most fun and spot-on results!”

The room was empty yet still the music bellowed loudly and echoed. Stood over by the front left stack he began to sway and move in time with the beat of the drum which throbbed and reverberated inside the large bass bins. Soon the room would begin to fill with people who listened and loved it all as much as he did, yet he was not here for them. The only person he came here for was himself, to feel the noise as it pulsed through the very core of what was left of him.

Some people would forget this night but not him. He remembered every single one, the empty rooms before and afterwards, the smiling faces and the songs which blared loud from the front left stack.

PBR Streetgang are remixed by Hardway Bros on a new EP for Kurtz, a groovy cosmic affair which leans heavily on the raw era of acid house which came before. This one is grounded in longstanding principles and lessons learnt on dancefloors over many years and you’d be wise to take heed and play it loud.

Roam Recordings’ latest instalment features long time label friends 40 Thieves – known for previous releases on the likes of Permanent Vacation, Leng, and Rong Records – and their excellent redux of Squeeze’s 1978 classic “Take Me I’m Yours”. The combo’s take on this proto-new wave gem renders the tune as spacier and yet more dance floor focused, with the sultry voice of Nina Lares supplying the captivating hook. The result is as slinky as can be, with a hypnotic four-on-the-floor providing the anchor for layers of lush pads and keys as Nina sings the spine-shivering melody. 

“Way back in 2014 on a rough stormy day, we found ourselves playing the baseline and leads along to the original version (by Squeeze) in the background and ultimately recorded midi for the entire thing. We built a new drum and rhythm track and ran the midi through some synths. The lovely and multi-talented chanteuse, Nina Lares, who has been recording with us for years and is long overdue for a release with us, graciously took on the song and re-interpreted the melodies and style in her own way. The result is laid back, natural, hypnotic. You know.. how we prefer pretty much everything. Did our best to keep the track sparse, to the point, focused on Nina, and take you somewhere else for a while. On remix we duty is was a call to some existing friends, new names and old to the initiated world of weirdo music.” - 40 Thieves, 2016

The first remix is a hearty chugger from Tronik Youth (Nein Records). The drums are given a bit more bite, riding a pulsing synth line while the vocals are eerily dubbed in and out. Next up Simon Peter (Claremont 56, Silhouette Music) shows his mastery of the live bass guitar which is front and center of his smoothed out balearic take on the tune. Bright chords and hand percussion make this one special for hazed-out moments. San Francisco up-and-comer Praus rounds out the package with a languid psychedelic version that recalls Massive Attack with its moody grittiness and dubby tendencies.
