Two sets of never-ending, towering concrete blocks faced off each other, alternating rhythmically to electric power transmission lines and large swathes of luxuriant green, that stretched out towards the sky and met to create domes of flora. Here, gigantic walking palms coexisted peacefully alongside barrigonas, huicungos and pallas, and many more trees, flowers and plants that offered shelter from the incessant, warm showers that graced the land and its terracotta paths on an almost daily basis. And beneath this humid undergrowth, a quiet but vibrant array of creatures lived amongst the ungurahuis and rubber trees; most of the fauna opted for a nocturnal lifestyle that dimmed their exotic colours and allowed them to showcase their diverse vocal abilities without being seen. 

Gottwax, the record label arm of Wales-own Gottwood Festival, returns after four years with a 30-track compilation that evokes the spirit of the music festival. Featuring electronic stalwarts such as Roman Flügel, DJ Tennis and Margaret Dygas, alongside fledgling emerging talents, we get a taste of the collection, compiled by the festival owners and new label manager Geoff Kirkwood AKA Me Me Me records boss Man Power. With Em & Stav's "Driver", the duo share a muted piece of Bristol-infused bass brimming with minimal sounds, glitching accents and unfettered beats.

Secretsundaze continue their quest to uncover amazing new music with the signing of exciting young Dominican artist Boundary. At just 19 years old Boundary aka Josué Suero makes music that is brimming full of ideas and influences that belie his young age.

The four track ‘Interlazados’ EP showcases Boundary’s melodic sensibilities and ear for a killer rhythm. You could listen to the tracks on this EP and be mistaken for thinking this is an artist who has maybe been lost in the throes of extended Villalobos DJ set or the deep pads of old Sun Electric records, but as an artist who is an outsider to the European dance scene, his inspiration comes from closer to home.

As Boundary explains, these comes from a fascination with video game music, his first real gateway to electronic music:

“For this EP I was interested to see if I could hit close to the feelings I have when I listen to certain video game music, how I could convey the amazing and deep storytelling in these songs. I really wanted them to feel like a ride/adventure. ‘Opticamente Avanzando’ (‘Optically Advancing’ in English) for me is like a venture into a machine that analyses a bunch of electronic music genres and it outputs as many different variations of these genres it can, each with their own little quirk/details, creating something unique in the process.”

You can definitely hear these influences in ‘Opticamente Avanzando’ which unwinds over 12 minutes of deep, mesmeric melodic, contemplative electronica with hints of '90s UK rave influences. Check the grins when the killer bassline drops halfway through!

The glossy melodies, jazzy motifs and hip-tugging bass of ‘OP.AV’ and the breakbeat house of ‘Interlazados’ channel more lo-fi, ambient house influences but all sent through that unique Boundary filter. Finally, the brain-warming, hypnagogic, tempo-changing rhythms of ‘Planos de Ausencia Casualidad’ could be the EP highlight and recalls the work of Lone and Actress.

With previous releases on LA based label Point Records and Paris’ Third Try label (Axel Boman, SFV Acid), Boundary’s emergence represents a promising prospect for the electronic music world, and ‘Interlazados’ another essential release on Secretsundaze.

On the 12th of April 1961, Yuri Gagarin was launched into orbit for the first and - so they tell us - the last time. Upon returning to Earth, Yuri became a global hero, travelling the world to tell of his adventure. Secretly, he was plagued by strange hallucinations and a persistent glow around his vision; a cornucopia of colour in a constant corona. At first fearing madness, the cosmonaut came to see these apparitions as a signal, an invitation, a welcoming beacon from a distant lighthouse blinking across the cosmic void. 

Taking inspiration from early Detroit techno culture, under the moniker Tony Neptune Leeds-based producer and artist Sam Jefferies is on a mission to tell a multi-sensory story through image, sound and text. A talented DJ and part of the Dimensions DJ Directory family, Sam has become synonymous with deep diving marathon sets both as Tony Neptune and as Yuri, solo or alongside fellow Leeds stalwart Mark 'Turbo' Turner.

After working hard on his production efforts over the last few years, his debut EP Reflections on a Daring Escape is finally seeing the light of day on Twelve Comets. Both sonically and aesthetically (Sam's visual work as a painter is at the core of the release), the 4-track release journeys deep into the cosmos, touching on the more celestial, emotive elements of electro and techno.

The music of Maltese producer Rudi Agius aka Jupiter Jax has always felt as much defined by mood as movement, guided by the “specific melancholy” of specific melodies. His latest long-player skews even more cinematic, conjuring twilit gardens and crooked city streets, windswept and warped by memory: No Such Thing. Inspired by notions of escape and the unknown, and threaded with dexterous live instrumentation, the album treads vibrant hybrids of moonrise electronica, downtempo dream house, and Balearic breakbeat, brooding but breezy, a Mediterranean midnight of the mind.

Agius speaks of his songs in terms of intuition and inevitability, how and where they transport the listener. These twelve tracks slip between senses and spheres, interplanetary but placeless, noir glimpses of ghostly coastlines and reflective reveries. Flutes, trumpets, voices, and percussion contour his club designs with a tactile fluidity, jazz accents reflecting off rain-slicked marble harbors, the wakening dawn still worlds away.

Premiere: Jupiter Jax - Moods No Grooves

Wandering through the city streets late at night he looked up at the towering buildings as the cars whizzed furiously by. He was walking towards Bang Sue Junction, a place he often visited alone to watch the world fly by. The people in their cars, those in illuminated offices miles up above, the moon as it hung heavily against a backdrop of black. There was a thick mist in the air, perhaps it was fog from the sea rolling in, that or the desolate smog of another city screwed by the smokey vehicles and reckless abandon of us. 

More Rice is a record label focussed on showcasing Asian musicians and artists, it is a label whom we have profiled previously. During lockdown they have compiled a release featuring over a dozen musicians, an eclectic, electronic affair well worth your time. This track is by Sarayu.
