If there’s one thing we like is creating a relationship with the artists who make the music we love to hear and release. Cardiff-based artist Castro is one of the best examples of this, as the young producer and percussionist sent us an email back in 2013 with a single demo and a request that we listened to it. We listened – and boy, are we glad we did – and ended up releasing it as Toot Toot on the Upper Cuts free downloads series. It was, and still is, one of the weirdest and most captivating zouk bass tracks we’ve heard so far, and it provided the foundation on which we kept building, eventually releasing the 2-track EP ‘Bipolar’ which he now follows-up with his proper debut EP ‘The Subtle Approach’, making the journey from unknown bedroom producer to promising young artist in a heartbeat. 

If his unpredictable takes on zouk bass were the starting point of our relationship with Castro, now there’s a whole lot more happening inside Owen Sheppard’s studio. The slow cadence of these modern kizomba offshoots and moombah hybrids naturally attracted the young percussionist’s attention, but as he grows as an artist he proceeds to fully dive into the Global Club Music world to tackle all sorts of rhythms and influences. However, as much as they have evolved since then, intricately-constructed beats, colorful melodies and a healthy mix of humour and sensitivity – all of it infused with that tropical aroma – are still very much at the heart of Castro’s tracks.

The Subtle Approach is the definitive introduction to Castro’s own sonic universe, where a profound understanding of genres and scenes like Zouk Bass, Moombah, UK Funky or Bass Music provides him with the foundation to build a hybrid sound that manages to touch on these influences while becoming something unique. From the breezy EP opener Cobwebs’ entrancing steel drums melodies to the vibrant and cheerful dancefloor-focused collaboration with Amsterdam-based vocalist Zanillya on Ring Ring, the frantic percussive energy of Let Me Go or Bam Bam’s weird looping vocal samples, the producer’s debut EP is a true sonic rollercoaster that proudly showcases some of the best things that can be found inside the Global Club Music scene.

In the middle of 2014, with all roads leading to Brazil, DJ, tastemaker and cultural curator Gilles Peterson embarked on the project of a lifetime, his most ambitious to date: setting up camp in a recording studio in Rio to record a sort of love letter to the nation under the artist name “Sonzeira” (meaning a joyful / killer sound). The resulting album “Brasil Bam Bam Bam” was a deeply personal work, bringing together the many authentic sounds and traditions but always through the eyes of an enthusiast inspired by 30 years of DJIng and record collecting. As Gilles said at the time: ‘Brazil’s music culture is massive..There’s the North – Bahia, Recife, the afro-brazilian sound. There’s batucada, the heavy sambas. Then bossa nova - Tom Jobim and all that history. There’s baile funk. There’s Tropicalia and the more soulful, funky scene championed by groups like Banda Black Rio, Trio Mocoto and icons like Gilberto Gil. Such a huge amount of stuff to fit in. I wanted to try and cover it all – to make a kind of Buena Vista meets club culture, but to keep it sonically very modern.’ The album included star turns from Brazilian superstars young and old, including ‘City of God’ actor and singer Seu Jorge, the grande dame of samba, 76-year-old powerhouse Elza Soares, and world-renowned percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. Of course, this was a Gilles Peterson record and so there was also many left turns -  who else would come up with Emanuelle Araujo’s bossa nova take on the 80s UK jazz-funk hit Southern Freeez, or draft in Seun Kuti (youngest son of Fela) to join the dots between modern day Brazil and the slave ships that bought poly-rhythms from Africa 400 years ago.

Of course, with roots so deep in the interesting edges of club culture it was natural for Gilles to continue this journey into new sonic territories. As such he has spent the last 6 months curating this new album “Brasil Bam Bam Bass” drafting in some of his favourite producers, friends, and associates to reimagine tracks from the album, with all the taste and good judgement you would expect. Much like the original record this is a very personal curation, a considered work that saw Gilles hand pick producers to re-imagine the album track by track - these include At Jazz, FaltyDL, DJ Oil, Kyodai, Max Graef and many more. Also included on this double CD are some wonderful outtakes (including the sublime reworking of Yusef lateef’s Plum Blossom previously only on the vinyl box set of the album), and dubbed out alternative versions of several tracks by Gilles’ Sonzeira co-producer Dillip Harris.          

If the original record was about examining Gilles own history and love for every quarter of Brasil’s sound, this provides a further glimpse into Gilles’ creative mind, ever serching for connections between rhythms; exciting, imaginative and original productions. Most of all this is a record where respect for the source material continues to shine through.

Hunter/Game - Genesis (Ripperton Remix) Just This 002 preview

Nuno dos Santos’ boutique label SoHaSo (shorthand for Something Happening Somewhere; although, sadly the same can no longer be said of Trouw) has been cruising steadily for the best part of two years now, but "Tonii" might just be the best thing committed to wax yet. Love Over Entropy's 12m original is sturdy with bright flourishes throughout, forever climbing and searching without resolve; techy without, y'know, being techy. 

This retouch comes from none other than Innervisions' main man, although  less overtly lovelorn than we've come to expect. He  twists the lead melody into something resembling a steel pan drum, backed by laser-guided synths pinging all around: a festival-sized breakdown held just at the precipice, never fully cresting. Dixon, you big tease.

It’s undeniable that Lisbon’s African-influenced electronic music scene is under everyone’s radar these days. A new generation of producers is spreading the infectious beats of afro-house, zouk bass or tarraxo across the globe, but it was the still highly-popular kuduro that got everything started. Self-disclosed as an artist ‘between house and techno’, Lausanne-based newcomer Jeremy Vieira aka Several Definitions rolls out his first release on SVT, 'No Artificial'.

The EP opens up with ‘Wind and Waves’, a dark tech-house build up with uplifting synths accented by avian trills that give the track an eerie jungle mood, tailored for the late night freaks. Boy Next Door is enlisted to add more depth and pace, turning the track into an even more profound nocturnal exploration, underlined by swirling analog synths.

The 7-minute long ‘Intro,’ of which we exclusively premiere today, speaks for itself, as it gradually introduces the artist’s core sound elements that can be recognized shape shifting throughout the EP. Several Definitions hauled KlangKuenstler for the remix, giving the track a complete club anthem makeover with an infusion of wobbly synths and extra groove. ‘No Artificial Comments’ showcases yet again the artist’s knack for propulsion, as metronomic throbs develop a hypnotic synth-laden, last-track-of-the-festival, eyes-to-the-sky kind of feeling.

Soma favourite Mark Henning makes a welcome return to the label after last year’s smash, Blackout, with the jacking Joyride EP. Mark has been busy in the studio this last while and drops 4 perfectly made, machine based weapons for your aural delight.

Title track Joyride kicks things off with a straight up 909 beat, complete with sci-fi sweeps and classic wood block percussion, quickly working its way into an very subtle groove with every element working effectively to keep it fully funk laden. 

Sideways completes the A side of the release and gets going right from the beginning. Pumping percussion takes hold and hits the ground running before a perfectly weighted synth hook lashes over the top with Henning playing with the synths LFO to creative effect.

Dust takes things down a notch as swirling pads drape themselves over a series 909 beat. Henning lets this one loop out, letting the subtle variations in the synths do the work as the 909 holds the beat solid and reminiscent of early Berlin/Detroit dub techno crossovers.

Mars Attacks closes of the EP and does so in particularly fine fashion. A more broken beat affair this time from Henning and he really works his machines into a sonic warfare of bass tones and tweeked out synths that sear through the crashing percussion workout.

Originally released back in 2006 Destination Boogie has been one of ZR's most popular and respected compilations. In fact we recently reissued it on vinyl for the first time. There's a lot of crappy edits out there, we believe these Dr Packer reworks are very worthwhile, well constructed new versions that make the tracks more playable for today's dancefloors whilst retaining their boogietastic musicality.

 

Since the album was released the whole edit culture has exploded so we thought it would be a nice idea to get one of the best, Dr Packer, to rework four of the most danceable cuts from the album.

 

We at ZR HQ think he's done a great job on these.

The face of a moon is a glorious thing. It keeps the sky shining bright in the darkest of nights, even if it is essentially loaning the light from the sun without having any intention of ever paying it back. If the sun had any sense, he'd give Wonga (other loan sharks are available) a call and get them to send the boys round to the moon's flat in Streatham to order him to cough up unless he wants a few extra craters all over his face.

But these aural treats aren't anywhere near as violent as the fictional baliffs in this peculiar scenario which highlights the fact that sugar should be banned from R$N Towers. @Sigward bobs and weaves his way through the ever-growing aural maze to make sure that his sounds hit the very centre of your ear and explode into life. Now, if you'll excuse us, we're off to go give Mr Moon fair warning that he might want to stay at his sister's this weekend.
