Less-O - Bumblebee

The buzz and hiss of the radio sounded loudly through the empty house, reverberating against the walls and ceilings. The space had been derelict for months now; ever since the events of summer took place, nobody had dared set foot inside. Why the eerie transmissions of the radio were still broadcasting night and day was a mystery — almost like the whispers of the afterlife were everpresent.

Flore's POLAAR imprint are returning to the fore with a five track release from Montreuil live act and sound artist Tim Karbon. Marking his first outing on the label since 2018's 'Drumyard Part 1', the sonics on 'Fluidity' were imagined in response to the recent changes in club music, drawing from hybrid dancehall, UK Techno and leftfield bass experiments.

Speaking about the project, which uses his voice as a central element, Tim explains that: 'I wanted to make this sonic ecosystem tangible by the use of my voice as a multiple sound source (chanted / sampled, rhythmic / melodic) which acts like a fluid around the different sets of percussions and instruments which come to line this story.'

Hailing from Tokyo, Prettybwoy stands as an emblematic figure within Japan’s burgeoning experimental bass music scene. Following the success of his 2021 album released on the esteemed Chinese label SVBKVLT, Prettybwoy makes a triumphant return to POLAAR with a fresh EP featuring two original tracks and a pair of electrifying remixes.

The EP commences with “Purify,” a track characterized by its striking contrasts. Seamlessly fusing raw, overdriven kicks and beat structures with delicate kalimbas, the piece is enveloped by an array of otherworldly robotic sounds and textures. As Nobuto, the artist behind Prettybwoy, explains, “I think that when we purify something, clean and dirt are melting in the same result.” The track skillfully builds tension, maintaining a radiant and luminous aura throughout.

The third entry into our Crux singles series comes from Circular Square, currently one of Brussel’s secret gems, but clearly on the verge of blowing up. Circular Square’s seemingly natural skill at crafting exciting interzones of bass-heavy club acrobatics and melodic realms, prime his productions for both adventurous dancefloors and deeper home immersion.

As the central piece, 3-HT-(xon) finds an equilibrium between its surgical drum stitches, swaths of glassy chimes and rapturous flutes. That balance tips a bit as lush, almost pastoral elements come to the fore half-way through, before the drums regain their ground.

Swiveling hi-hats surround a mighty, prowling bass on GBS_02x, an expertly crafted minimalist and stealthy pouncer, that successfully wrings every last drop of momentum out of its carefully selected components. As an addition, Leese’s snakey flip reconstructs its stagger into a rolling parade of tribal percussion, intermittent vocal stabs and cavernous drop-outs, mastering the fine art of remixing that is true to the original, while still bearing the unmistakable handwriting of the remixer.

Slaloming between stations since early 2022, @tra_verse is an Amsterdam–based radio series and a music platform led by @lolobatten. Now expanding into a label, traverse presents its debut compilation: traversée.

We are thrilled to premiere one of the VA's tracks by @phobhorecords’ honcho @matteocoffetti, a deconstructed digi–jumble landscape full of bubbling basslines, dizzy polymeters and twisted vocal chops.

The first release on the newly established @Greyhound-days imprint comes from Christian Kroupa alias Alleged Witches, hailing from Slovenia, who proved his skills and innovation as a participant at the Red Bull Music Academy in 2014.

Since then he became one of the most prominent names of Slovenia's techno and house scene, with making appearance on the mighty Fabric mix compilation, producing a remix of Alex Smoke for legendary Belgian label R&S, while also releasing a 12” entitled Serve The Spirits on R&S sub-label Meda Fury.

»One Skilled In The Black Arts« EP consists of four tracks, meant for dictating the dance floor with their drum workout, as well as luring you into its deep ritualistic feel, with distant native tongues echo.

For an extra wonderful hypnotic polyrhytms, a rework has been provided by @marcopassarani, one of the Italian leading dance music producers and DJs, who continues to be an inspiration and providing his knowledge and skills to younger generations. While Bristol based Jacob Martin alias @HodgeBristol demonstrated his expertise in percussion, resulting in an slamming rework, not meant for the faint-hearted. Just shows, why Hodge is one of Bristol's most exciting new names.
