Anonymous producer Kilig (@kiligsounds) debuts on Scuffed Recordings with the ‘Dream Logic’ EP, fusing together elements of UK-influenced techno, minimal, ambient and industrial.

The ‘Dream Logic’ EP is the latest in a string of releases from London’s Kilig, who has turned heads of late with DJ support from the likes of Ben UFO, Call Super, Saoirse, and Midland, and radio plays on BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, and the Introducing Hot List.

From the intricate sound design and melodic flourishes of the title track, to the percussive depth charge of ‘Ape’, to the imaginative vocal cuts and minimal throb of closer ‘I’m Trying’, the release is a journey through Kilig’s eclectic production style, honed as a resident of London’s Night Tales and Bristol’s HOMEBREW parties.

There is definitely something "afro" inspired about this latest EP from Puma & The Dolphin, certainly in comparison to pretty much everything else I've ever heard from him, which includes a great EP on Canadian imprint Chambre Noir and some stellar inclusions on every one of Dj soFa's highly respected "Elsewhere" compilations.

I'm told that while immersed in domestic life during lockdown in Sofia, Bulgaria, the music evolved to take in what was happening at home and saw the inclusion of toy instruments, his own drum playing, the voices of his children playing and even the family parrots whistling and squawking in the background. These random ambient insertions when seen in the context of the hypnotic and percussive rhythms and timbres throughout are oddly reminiscent of the late, great Francis Bebey who, although culturally and physically a million miles removed, was also known for recording much of his work at home and who also featured the voices of his children playing.

In fact, it is as much the music's playfulness and simplicity that give the pieces their distinctive character, at times echoing the repetition and mesmerism of Raymond Scott's "Soothing Sounds For Baby" series. Yet, childrens' music this is not. There is a mysticism and depth on one hand and a willingness to experiment on the other that reminds me of pioneering experimentalist K. Leimer's early Eno-inspired tape outings as well (see "Supermarket" for example).

I asked Puma & The Dolphin's Nikko Names if he could share the story behind how these six tracks came together. He had this to say:

"This collection of pieces were created during a monotone period of my life which I have overlaid with colour: a time in which I surrender to the beauty of home life - watching my kids play, feeding the birds - entwining these sounds of my surroundings amongst the rhythmic layers of these pieces. Playing the drums to remind us of the next circle dance for four. There is something mystic to travel only in your head; a shamanic trip inside the body with no concepts and answers."

Now the time has come for the Berlin duo’s long-awaited debut album. The 7 trackscomprising Der große Preis distil the inimitable NB sound which blends velvety synth-pop and crystallinedigi-dub, basslines like cubes of glass and whiplash snares. There was a darkness which hung thick in the air as he approached the old church on the hillside. He looked back down at the footpath upon which he had tread several miles in search of this ancient ruin by which he hoped would lead to salvation. His name was Steve. It had always been as such and he hoped that as he entered the pearly gates of heaven that it would remain as such. As he opened the creaky old door to the monastery he prepared to leave this earth for good, all its ungodly mess. 

Throne Of Blood have been good friends of Ransom Note for many years and they release some killer music. Their output and consistency has been phenomenal, championing alternative electronic and dance music which has then gone on to receive support from wide sectors of the community. The latest is no exception, a collection of remixes of a track simply titled "Steve" by which Vito & Druzzi are contributors.

Following a string of short transmissions on Tanzbar and Curle, Gent-based producer Thomas Neyens AKA Far Out Radio Systems asks listeners to tune in for his first lengthy broadcast, his debut album On Boolean Plains, released via SoHaSo. Harking back to the hey days of Warp and Skam, the 12 tracks see Neyens reshape those influences into his own unique collection of intricate melodies and distorted beats, touching on strains of ambient, breakbeat, bleep techno and percussive house.

Much like the lone ray of sunshine finding its way to your window on an overcast day to brighten the mood, Timothy Crombie a.k.a. A Psychic Yes’ forthcoming release, "That Swamp Feeling" on Schloss Records has had quite the same effect. With prior releases on Kalahari Oyster Cult and Tech Startup, the British producer is growing and perking ears up around the scene. 

"H Unsolved" is our pick of the litter for today’s premiere. With musings of K-Lone's Wisdom Teeth label dancing around our respective heads, it’s hard to pass up on this style of music. The snares, melodies, and drums all jumping in and out of focus seemingly at random but maybe not?! As if each musical element is a precise brush stroke that contributes to a larger coherent musical picture.

"H Unsolved", and the rest of That Swamp Feeling EP will be out on the 6th of November, and we highly suggest listening through.

Amongst the layers of sheets, she buried her head deep into the folds, hiding away from the world. Her bed had become an unhealthy sanctuary; a place for eating, sleeping and working. The outside filled her with dread, the thought of interaction with another forcing her chest to tighten and her breath to shorten. She willed the tears back into her ears, afraid to show how defeated she'd become, but she needed to accept the help that she'd spent so long ignoring.

Greek artist Penelope's Fiancé follows a string of tape releases on the likes of Clan Destine Records and Live Adult Entertainment, with a vinyl debut on Hypermedium. The Cutting Edge Of A Knife fuses the sounds he's become known for across his previous releases; a fuzzy blend of post-industrial, lo-fi and techno, and merges frantic percussion with ghostly, eerie atmospheres and thunderous bass lines.

US based label, Lurid welcomes Spanish producer Señora for a stunning new double gatefold album entitled ‘Fósil’ that showcases his unique take on hypnotic rhythm, found sounds and sampling. Señora became a firm favourite with the likes of Andrew Weatherall (R.I.P.) and Sean Johnston for his rugged grooves and innovative approach to production, melding the sounds of machines, animals, electricity and other weird noises in a flurry of FX and sonic experimentation. He debuted on this label in 2017 and has also landed on Shango Records, Night Noise and LNDKHN since then. Now based in Berlin and a regular at clubs and festivals round Europe he offers up a debut album that features nine stunning pieces that ”aim to reflect on the next evolutionary steps of the human race".
This is a hugely atmospheric album of perfectly realised inter planetary sounds, the whole thing taking you on a cerebral and evocative journey far away from here.

Blue Hour is a label of which we are most fond here at Ransom Note, it represents that sweet spot between heavy hitting techno, trance and euphoric ambience. It's the type of inspiring, uplifting material which has been keeping us going through a miserable year and for that we tip our hat to them. This track is by Trading Xircles, a collaborative project which focusses on texture and soundscapes as much as it does club ready material.
