City Fly return for their 15th release, backed by serious muscle in the form of NY*AK, and fellow contributors Ian Blevins and Mark Hand, who make up the stomping and spectacular Afghan Jams EP. Starting strong is ‘Return’, with a relentless dub techno energy, graced later by soft vocals and euphoric violin strings making for an epic dancefloor anthem. ‘Slick’, with Mark Hand, veers off into a loose, crackly acid trip. It’s followed by ‘Troia’, rounding off side A with an all-out party of flutes and keys over one infectious ecosystem of drums. Then, on side B, ‘We Both Know’ comes through; NY*AK’s eye-catching, sample-heavy jam with Ian Blevins with an eerie bassline. And the EP concludes with title track ‘Afghan Jam’, featuring Mark Hand - a special groove captured mid-session. Something a house head can easily get lost in.

With an abundance of amazing tunes and music coming out of these restricted times, it’s made for a bumper crop of wonky chuggers, acid heaters and sun kissed Balearic bangers for our annual ‘A Summer Riot’ EP. So much so, that’s this year’s IX instalment has bolstered considerably, now spreading over two editions, and with 6 tracks apiece from some of our favourite producers.
Seasoned Futureboogie pros, Christophe and PBR Streetgang, head up the selection on Part Two, with Christophe delivering a meaty, reverb soaked, acid brain bender on ‘Critters 2 (The Revenge)’, whilst the PBR boys offer up a sleez and seductive Moroder inspired romp.
Glasgow’s Manakinz make a second appearance across the two ‘A Summer Riot IX’ releases, with the hypnotising ‘Mystic Throbber’, whilst Roe Deers come good with the quirky and funky sounds of ‘Monkey Dance’.
‘Fire In Zero Gravity’ by duo Acolyte, touches on Detroit techno soul and inspirative piano work for their entry, and Jakobin seals off the EP with the ghostly ambience and shuffling beats of ‘Mighty Mt’.

PREMIERE : Christophe - Critters 2 (The Revenge)

Fragile X is the new collaborative guise of Inga Schunn and Dylan Chase, the latter has been releasing material as Caffeine Worldwide over the past few years. Here with the ‘Lifetime’ EP the pair inaugurate their new project, the collection of tracks was recorded over four days in Mexico City in early 2019. Schunn provided vocals while Chase focused on the mechanical aspects. It was mixed by Chase in Mexico City in 2020, while he was sick with Covid-19. We don’t know if there will be another record. A lot is uncertain these days. This EP marks the third vinyl release by Bouquet, a label and party series based in Chase’s hometown of San Diego.
Title-cut ‘Lifetime’ leads the release with garage tinged off-kilter drums, swirling atmospherics, snaking sub bass grooves and resonant synth melodies all dynamically
 underneath Schunn’s hypnotic vocal stylings. ‘Prix’ follows and employs a similarly organic rhythmic feel while stirring in airy string melodies, plucked strings and an amalgamation of fluttering woodwind and acid synths throughout.
‘Karaoke Gurl’ kicks off the flip side of the EP, edging into electronica realms with a bumpy 303 bass hook and dreamy synth chimes while once again welcoming Inga’s silvery vocal contributions. The ‘Fragile X’ theme then concludes the project on a cinematic tip, nodding towards an early 2000’s IDM aesthetic with broken drums, textural synths and organ melodies.

On 'Echo Station' Coyote turn up the dubwise energy, while James Bright brings his super polished modern balearica sound to 'Acid Safari'. Native Cruise infuses crunchy house drums with the piano hook on 'Perfume' and Manuel Darquart get Technique-era New Order with 'A Dance With Jupiter'. With 'Dream Clouds' Newborn Jr brings the house down with an irresistible guitar hook and italo arps; Bliss Inc fuses his modern progressive style to 'Spirit Walker' while Man Power closes the proceedings with a tribal heavy house workout on 'Acid Safari.

Finally making an appearance on his own label @breathingroomrecords, @igorbmusic is setting the mood for the transition from autumn to winter. The Raindrops EP sees the Canadian artist following up on his debut LP, Stranded Seaside, released earlier this summer on Ibiza’s NuNorthern Soul. Shedding the lower BPMs and sunny air of the album, this time he opts for more dancefloor-friendly compositions with some darker atmospheres cropping up as the release progresses from song 1 to 4, just as the weather does the same outside.

The title track features friend and talented collaborator Ian Usher. Together, he and Igor create a groove-laden piece that ebbs and flows just as an early fall day would transition from sun to rain and back again. From the swelling guitars in the break to the deep bass and the solo at the piece’s climax, Ian’s talents are on full display and merge beautifully with Igor’s production efforts. Second up is Dry Leaves, an upbeat solo composition that blends dusty percussion, Igor’s trademark element, with some arpeggiated synth work and deep, lush pads while falling keys in the latter half mimic leaves descending from their canopies.

Igor and Ian combine for another track on the release. Whirlwinds is an amalgam that brings together influences from all over the musical spectrum, with instruments such as the ney, oud and bongos winding together like the swirling updrafts of a late fall storm. The EP closer, Poseidon’s Calling, is the moodiest of the bunch.
