Ambient Jungle started in the mid-90s as a subgenre to Jungle, incorporating lush atmospheric sounds on top of high energy, chopped-up jungle rhythms. Also commonly known as Intelligent Jungle, Atmospheric Jungle, or Deep Jungle. This subgenre is known for deep basslines, atmospheric pads, filter sweeps, soul-diva vocal samples, and chopped breakbeats based primarily on the Amen break. While not as chopped-up as traditional Jungle, Ambient Jungle is still based heavily on rhythmic improvisation. Another difference is that the diva samples are generally not sped up as traditional Jungle and vocals are more heavily processed with chorus/delay/filter sweeps. The genre is influenced by the Ambient Techno/Chill scene of the early 90s and relied on similar production styles. They both were about taking an existing genre (e.g. Jungle) and adding an atmospheric, spacey feel to it to make it "Ambient". There is a spectrum of tempo/moods: calmer and chill, or a hard-hitting feeling. While called "Ambient" the beats can often be heavy. Many of the Ambient Jungle artists were producing mainstream Jungle and often incorporated hardcore Jungle breaks typical of the mid to late 90s. This can give a unique contrast of high-energy and chill.

Some artists associated with the first wave Ambient Jungle scene: LTJ Bukem, Photek, Dave Wallace, Omni Trio, DJ Krust, Aphrodite, Peshay, J Magik, Double O, Om Unit, Blade Arp-1, Submorphics, Jesta

The record compilation "Artcore - Ambient/Jungle" released in 1995 on the React record label popularized this subgenre as it was just beginning to take shape. 

From the liner notes: 

"Jungle with fusions of various styles, from ambient to jazz.
Rythmic, hypnotic, melodic, deep, spacey.
Breakbeats used more as another sound or instrument, to compliment the surrounding sounds.

Appreciate Artcore on different levels: relax to the spacious, abstract, ambient, surround sounds, and allow them to drift through your subconscious, at the same time focus on the Jungle rythms in the forefront for direct immediate stimulation.
Ambient Jungle - A new sound track for the modern era"

Ambient Jungle had a revival in the 2000s as part of the renewed Chill Out scene which continues to the present day (2023). It is now known as DnB, as the rest of the music scene had moved on from the term Jungle. Similarly, the music scene moved on from "Ambient" and now uses the more generic term "Chill". A number of new genre names also came about like Chill and Bass, Liquid DnB, Cosmic DnB, etc. The beats are still primarily Amen breaks but aren't as chopped up and rely less on rhythmic improvisation. Recent releases are influenced by modern laptop based production/performance techniques. There are now more pop vocalist lyrics and can incorporate traditional song structure like verse/chorus/hook, rather than strictly soul-diva samples. What I find fascinating is that this early 90s genre has lived on, reinventing and recontextualizing itself as new producers do their take on Jungle/DnB. Ultimately it’s the fans still enjoying the atmospheric sounds.

The city lights flashed by in a blur of colours, their reflection painting shapes on the windows. Lost souls and sober faces rubbed shoulders, forced smiles and vacant eyes met across the carriage. One journey was different to the next, but here everyone was bundled together trying to find their way somewhere unknown. Where were they headed? Where had they been? Each had a name, each had a story to tell, each had fears and desires that bubbled below...

Brighton-based producer WDDS has an elegant yet straightforward take on jungle, DnB and breaks. Recently he's contributed to a compilation on Dublin label Woozy, while on his own imprint he's been churning out a series of floaty, atmospheric singles that fill you to the brim with nostalgia. The next is 'Subway', which began as a voyage into melodic breaks but took a turn into no-nonsense jungle territory as part of WDDS' live set. It might be more of a heavy hitter than his previous outing but it still retains that inherent dreaminess we've come to associate with his music.

Starting our week off with a silky smooth roller from Modem & Germa as they team up for a delightful slice of hypnotic groove for Irish based techno imprint Syncopated Records.

Syncopated Records welcomes Glasgow groove master Mod​ē​m to their new and refreshing imprint that has been focussing on minimalistic & groove focussed techno cuts. The six track EP is a fine collection of deep and rolling techno rhythms, built upon original tracks from Outflight boss Mod​ē​m as well as a collection of remixes, and a collaboration with Germa.

Mod​ē​m serves a powerful EP packed full of raw, driving, percussive and minimalistic groovy tracks. This release consists of three original tracks as well as remixes from Danny Wabitt, Marcelo Antonio, Mikrotakt.

Mod​ē​m & Germa serve up a chilling piece of hypnotic goodness as they team up on ‘ORRO’. Jeff Mill’s style syncopated bleeps are the star of the show here, whirling and gripping atmosphere with acute metallic hits, make the repetitive synth line so contagious. Rolling low end and tactile percussive grooves facilitate the rhythmic entity off the main sequence, and capture a thrilling and glossy atmosphere. This is hypnotic techno done properly.

Four Four Premiere: Mōdem & Germa - ORRO [Syncopated Records]

Today we host a premiere from Hykken's latest release 'Kill Shot' on Reboot Records. Kill Shot is easily defined as a peak-time jackin' house tool with a twist. Thunderous low-end accompanied by harsh stabs and progressive breaks can be heard throughout, driving the track from start to finish. Buckle up, this gets bumpy.

Today's premiere features Irish DJ and producer Hyyken, who boasts over 10 years of experience with music production. He has since garnered support from Patrick Topping, Pete Tong, Danny Howard, TSHA, Meg Ward, Disfreq and so on through his releases over the years. Featuring on BBC Radio 1 with his track 'Meet Me Later' that also saw a release on Monki's & Friends imprint, as well as 'Flatbush AVE' that dropped on Edinburgh's impressive Fresh Take Records.

Hyyken has earned slots at shows and festivals all around the country in recent years. Some of which include shows in Wexford, Waterford, Dublin and Louth all while supporting acts such as Shampain, Yasmin Gardezi, Obskür, Fionn Curran and more in the process. Hykken also made his festival debut at Outset last year, where he shared the Reboot Rave Society stage with numerous Irish artists like GES, Midweek and Sohotsospicy.

The Kill Shot EP is made up of 4 tracks in total. Retrograde, Kill Shot, High On You and Heaven Bound. Each composition does a fantastic job at sounding unique, while remaining coherent and similar to Hyyken's distinct interpretation of house music. Kill Shot is reminiscent of a peak-time party-starter that is cleverly crafted. Go ahead. Listen for yourself.

Ardalan’s ‘Mr. Good’ LP offers an emotional look into the heart and mind of a young artist. It’s a coming of age tale that tracks Ardalan as he figures out his sound and creative identity. 

The story unfolds across eleven tracks documenting Ardalan’s search for analog perfection.  The intricate sound design comes from a collection of hardware Ardalan has built over the years. There are no generic basslines or sample packs involved.  Ardalan reaches all the way back to early 2000s while updating the sound with modern mixdowns and clever production tricks. The album is weird yet danceable, classic yet futuristic.  

After watching Ardalan develop his sound and musical career over the years, we're proud to see him turn in this forward-thinking record that pushes his sound to the future.
