"Throat is an examination of using site-specific and unusual acoustic environments as a catalyst for compositional expression as well as a tool to transform and transcend the timbral and aesthetic qualities associated with the recorder as an instrument. The 5 pieces on the record are written for, and recorded in, specific spaces.

'Anechoic Chamber'. Extremely fast, staccato, agressive and dense rhythmic layers breaks the silence in the room without any reverberation. This musical expression is a sort of sonification of the extreme amount of sharp and intense sound-absorping spikes that penetrate the space from every direction. The gridlike, agressive and enclosing qualities of the room is highlighted further by spatializing the music in a way which gives the listener the impression of being "attacked" from every direction."

Additionally, we would like to give attention the video premiere of 'Brønshøj Vandtårn' - the massive cathedral-like water tower with approximately 15 seconds of reverb is shrouded in modal harmony and airy organ like timbres. Central to this composition is the use of textural, timbral and spatial development as a way to introduce variation in the rhythmically simple and meditative musical material. In other words the development of the piece is produced by contrasting:

- The intimate and fragile with the distant and diffused.
- The static and the simple with the dramatic and the complex.
- The noisy and airy with the somewhat sinusodial timbral possibilities of the recorder.

Purelink have emerged as underdogs of the Ambient and Downtempo scenes – the past couple of years has seen the group release a number of records which showcases a deep sense of understanding and ambition toward a genre which is often misunderstood and misheard.

Tommy Paslaski (aka Concave Reflection), Ben Paulson (aka Kindtree) and Akeem Asani (aka Millia) have been releasing music as Purelink – broadening the narrative around their sound as they weave intricate layers, samples and melodies together to create a new age world of their own making.

Their music is atmospheric and rooted in moments of personal reflection and self awareness. They rework material and samples to create something else entirely and the music itself is as much a soundscape or a backdrop to the world of the listener.

Recent releases have come on Peak Oil, UwU dust bath, Naff and Lillerne Tape Club.

Following on from Calm’s stunning By Your Side album on Hell Yeah late last year, it is now revisited with a series of special remixes & Mellow Mellow Acid Versions. Part 1 finds the Japanese artist himself revisit one track, while Mind Fair also step up with fresh new versions. 

 First up, Calm reworks his own ‘Mellow Mellow Sadness’ into Mellow Mellow Acid.  It's a super slow burning and soothing remix with a gentle acid line drawn out of tumbling drums. Blissful chords ripple out to the horizon and you can really feel the sun on your face with this one. 

 Golf Channel and International Feel disco duo Mind Fair step up to flip ‘My Home Town’ into a long legged and gorgeously hazy downtempo disco bomb. The chords shimmer and shine and will have people swaying with their eyes shut and is sure to become a huge track this summer.

Calm - Mellow Mellow Sadness (Calm "Mellow Mellow Acid" Remix)

The complete collection of remixes of Calm’s album is now presented on a special CD/digital release that, rather pleasingly, repackages the remixes in the same order as the original tracks. The likes of Mark Barrott, Yuri Shulgin, Gallo, Calm himself, Lucas Croon, Cantoma and more all feature.

First up is the Mark Barrott mix of 'Space Is My Place'. It’s an exotic feeling track with a watery current, and then comes J-Walk, who has just put out a fantastic album of leftfield downtempo on Wonderfulsound. His remix of ‘Afterglow and First Star’ has astral synths and leads that will have you gazing skyward, before Yuri Shulgin then steps up with the gorgeous ambient awakening that is his take on ‘Ending Summer Beginning Autumn.’

Label homie Gallo gets long legged on his deep-cut remix of ‘Sky Color Passing’ and after the twinkling melodies and scattered drums of My Friend Dario’s remix of ‘Shadows and Lights’ is Calm’s own acid laced interpretation of ‘Mellow Mellow Sadness'.

Alex Vincent is in reflective mood as he drowns you in lush pads and sustained chords on his remix of ’Shade of Tree’ and the always masterful Lucas Croon’s take on ‘Before Landing’ is a gentle rush of rave euphoria with its old school breakbeats and glowing pads.

Mind Fair’s remix sinks you into a slow motion house gem before balearic bossman Phil Mison becomes Cantoma for a version of ‘You Can See The Sunrise Again’ that has bright blue skies and jaunty chords making you move.

This is a varied and vital packages of remixes that not only provides plenty of heat for DJs, but also works as a fantastic standalone album.

Calm - Shadows And Lights (My Friend Dario's Etna Breeze Remix)

The first set of remixes of Calm’s By Your Side got plenty of props for sound quality as well as their ability to get people grooving. Now the label serves up some more remixes, this time from legendary figures Mark Barrott (international Feel) and My Friend Dario. 

Up first is Barrott, the long time slow motion master whose downtempo, ambient, new age and electronic fusions very much set out the Balearic template way back in the nineties. ‘Space Is My Place’ (Mark’s Re<>Imagination to the Sacred Heart Center) is an enchanting and tropical reworking with exotic percussion and liquid drums that gentle sway to and fro like a raft at sea. It’s another escapist, transportive track from Barrott that takes you to the other side of the world.

Purelink is the brainchild of Tommy (@raw_silk), Akeem (@millia-rage) and Ben (@kind_tree).  All talented producers in their own right, the three are based in Chicago and have been making tunes together that last year or so, featuring on recent comps from Naive, Lillerne Tapes and Chicago Research.

Throughout their Animix they showcase some of their own forthcoming productions amidst a magical downtempo exploration. I love the balance between foggy and  euphoric they've managed to create in this hour long trip.
