In the barren industrial landscape where noise meets techno, Richie Culver’s Quiet Husband project continues to carve out a landscape that’s as uncompromising as it is compelling. Following the raw, unflinching ‘Religious Equipment’ album, Culver is back with ‘RAGING HABITS 2’.

This sophomore EP signals a subtle shift in approach for Culver. Where ‘Religious Equipment’ dug deep into the harrowing depths of addiction through brutal rhythms and spoken word confessionals, ‘RAGING HABITS 2’ introduces Chicago influences with ambient elements and dark, textural explorations.


 
Culver’s music is like “being punched in the gut with a scrap-metal fist” and captures that raw, pure feeling without thinking. Neural rushes. Claustrophobia’s exit door.

Quiet Husband - The Ransom Note Mix

Having made a name for himself through a string of choice releases for the likes of Nous’klaer and Delsin, Dutch producer Konduku has been turning heads with his ever innovative take on the techno medium. Pushing for new directions, Konduku’s been laying down intriguing blends of dubbed-out, Afro-infused grooves and plural strains of abstract-leaning, breaks-friendly hybrids. The present mix showcases the breadth of his influences and essential components, extrapolating techno’s genre-transcending nature through a fine mix of heavily verbed-out electronics and shape-shifting buildup, never quite going where you’d expect it, rather seeking the excitement of suspenseful arcs and unsuspected developments. Bold as it should.

Next up comes Canadian-born polymath Darwin, who’s been getting Berliners talking ever since she kicked off her event series REEF back at now defunct venue Griessmühle. Tired of providing partygoers with the same formulaic sounds they’d come to expect, she started to play around with others, dubstep and bass among them. It was a fresh approach that through persistence ended up paying off with a form that’s as animate, subaquatic and essential to its surroundings as the ocean reefs that inspired the name. A UK-leaning sound, that pays homage to breaks, drum n bass and garage and fuses it with a techno more indicative of her chosen digs. Nowadays that approach has really gained traction and her parties blossomed into something much larger, encompassing her own selections, whether at UNFOLD or closing Berghain’s Klubnacht, as well as the launch of her SPE:C imprint. Her loose selection and low-end frequencies are a modern take on a long tradition of rumbling bass and out-and-out techno, brought together with a killer instinct for the hourly requirements of a dancefloor with high expectations. Following on from her previous techno stints at Bassiani, Podcast 251 further explores this side and delves back into her roots; a studio mix brought to you from this true pioneer, mastered by bestie Esposito.

Dropping straight into the cavernous environs of an unreleased Regis side Frosty Jack’s, the selection rides a restrained line building tension through a number of Nastia Reigel tracks deployed with utmost precision before upping its stride with Luke Slater’s Planetary Assault Systems and quickly landing first peak from The Wizard himself, with Jeff Mills' slamming ‘93 cut Step to Enchantment (Stringent). Taking in a track from their comrade Surgeon’s forthcoming album, as well as the simmering acid of their own tune Hidden, Sandwell District bring it back round full circle via two further unreleased reworks of heroes Meat Beat Manifesto providing a breakbeat singed rupture to close out the proceedings with the vocal snatches of MBM’s Helter Skelter summing it all up really: “It's in my brain now. This is it!”
