Thie week we have Scots born DJ & producer Andrew Moore, who is now based in Berlin. Andrew started off his music career as a camera man and editor for Glasgow based electronic music magazine eqtv.dj, where he filmed and interviewed the best DJs and club nights in Glasgow, as well as various artist from around the world. He then started his DJ career after moving to London and working in the city’s queer underground scene. Since moving to Berlin, Andrew’s career has gone from strength to strength after making waves across Eastern Europe and signing to and releasing on Ellen Allien’s infamous BPitch record label. Based in Berlin Ruin is a writer, vocalist, activist and sex worker. She is passionately independent and is a founding member of the Sex Worker Action Group, Berlin Collective Action e.V and Radiant Love Berlin. 

We were first introduced to her through the release of a new EP in which she collaborated with D.Tiffany and Vani-T on Isla Records. Her contribution to the record allowed for her to reach and interconnect with a new audience, showcasing her own creative perspective toward lyricism, sound and design.

She herself was keen to explore this part of her nature in more detail and emphasises the importance of her and other sex workers amplification and inclusion in the wider music community. The following mixtape she has submitted is conceptual in nature and reflects the following ethos:

"It's not often that I am invited to participate in such a formate with a reach to the music community. I think it is incredibly important that we start to include sex workers in the conversation, not only because of stigma and raising awareness of their struggles but because of the incredible amount of exploitation of sex work aesthetic and vibe within the music industry 'the hustle'. Some think it's sick but existing in capitalism is harmful and violent and this is what I want to express. Do I like my work? no. I don't enjoy existing in capitalism, but furthermore sex workers are not only judged for the way we choose to survive within it but criminalised. And legalisation without decriminalisation is nothing, because it only regulates a very small amount of the community that can register. Being a sex worker becomes your identity, something that I could have never prepared myself for.

I would like to use this mix, What's your nature?, with two themes sewn throughout, almost as a collage. The themes I have chosen to speak about in my writing are pain/stigma & decriminalisation of sex work. The newly released record 'Calling Me' will be featured throughout the mix along with other collaborations, and some tones to accompany my writing."

He quickly immersed himself into the intimate underground music scene of his hometown in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Thirteen years later, MonSanto is building momentum on his artistic journey with having opened for renowned artists such as Danny Tenaglia and Christian Voldstad. Breaking into the Toronto and Montreal underground scene, MonSanto has performed at music festivals and events such as AIM Music Festival, Husa Sounds and many more. With musical influences such as Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, Sasha and Steve Lawler, MonSanto’s deep infectious grooves permeate the dance floor. The energy exchange MonSanto passionately exudes while performing is unparalleled. Captivating the crowd is his superpower.

Production wise, MonSanto is inspired by the soundscapes which surround him, along with infinite creative downloads on the daily. His last EP ‘Padelia’ [Phantom Deck Records, 2020] is a dance floor romance, which reveals a delicious taste of what’s to come in 2022. MonSanto’s sound is exceptionally full of deep, sultry, melodic grooves. Stay tuned for new releases and international gigs on the horizon in 2022.

The dynamic Berlin duo, better known as The Reason Y, return to Second State with a brand new EP entitled 'Density'. After last years debut, the duo have been working tirelessly to deliver a massive three tracker and they have managed to do just that as well as locking in heavy hitter Nick Curly for a stellar remix to guarantee a monumental record. Opening things up is the title track 'Density' and it certainly delivers the trademark TRY sound with crisp, racing hi-hats and low rumbling bass. As signals of bold sirens resonate through fields of sonic indulgence, the duo commandeer a journey into cosmic spaces. Followed by 'Sunwaves' which is the duo's ballad to the Romanian festival they first played last summer. Laced with grooving low end and sun drenched atmospherics, 'Sunwaves' is the aural illustration of exactly what you would expect from one of the world's finest festivals where the water meets the dance floor on an exotic Romanian beach. On the flip side, the duo take a step back and drop the heady down-tempo number 'Whisper' where percussive grooves fill the blank silent palette as washes of mischievous pads create the feeling of being lost deep in the jungle while a whispering voice guides the listener towards some vacant hope of finding a native estate. To wrap things up, we turn to the one and only Nick Curly for his twist on ‘Whisper’, and in true Curly fashion he delivers a bomb. Swirling tones are draped over an infectiously loopy groove as surges of white noise grow, constantly taking the levels of energy to new heights while the original vocal is brought to the front to ensure a trippy trek into the grandiose areas of late nights.
