For this edition of the L.I.E.S. artist podcast series we welcome the one and only Willie Burns. Also known as William Thomas Burnett, bossman of W.T. Records, Burnett is a veteran of the game as he's been deep behind enemy lines for a long long time. If you're looking, you can usually find Burnett deep in the basement of The Thing, the largest used record store in all of NYC or in his studio down the block working late into the night as he sips a bottle of moderately priced red wine. 

Never one to follow the trends, here we have Burnett mixing almost an hours worth of what he describes as "early street techno trance" a genre which undoubtedly has been now brought to the forefront from his days digging in the basement of the Thing. Done in one take, it's wild breakbeat driven, trance-laden trip as the author suggested, so get ready to take a pill and throw your hands in the air.

Garnier, the Grand Seigneur of Techno, surprises with his first EP for 50WEAPONS.

Known as pioneer and influencer of the global electronic music scene, internationally respected DJ and the undisputed godfather of the French techno scene, Garnier is always in touch with the emergence of new artists and genres. His music career has always been about integrity. Worth mentioning is the re-edition of Laurent Garnier’s book “Electrochoc”, which was released in 2003. The book is a journey through electronic music history via Laurent Garnier's career, starting in 1987 until the present day.

Nonetheless his release for 50WEAPONS doesn't at all sound like the “the French touch” one would expect, but pairs the dark sound of 90ies techno icons Underground Resistance with bleepy acid lines.

Here Garnier reiterates his close working relationship with the underground and shows once again his skill and rigour as a producer.

Typical Garnier basslines flirt with the Retro Charme of Chicago and the roots of house music as well as his own. There's a reminiscence of ”The sound of the big Babou” one of his great hits, but it seams like a version stripped down to the streamlines of an underground club between 4 and 6 a.m.

And quite the star, Monsieur Garnier garnishes his EP with a B side full of conoisseur hit potential. With its shouted vocals and driving bassline H.E. Is a killer of a swinger.

The EP, entitled AF 4302, is distinguished by an organic, raw, acid-flavoured techno sound. Three tracks and three different moods in which Garnier reinvents himself and takes his music to new, unchartered territories.

These tracks are razor sharp and should be handled with care!

The Miami-based L.I.E.S. and Apron correspondent mixes up a bunch of techno and electro for our 89th podcast. 
According to the man himself, we have the much-maligned internet to thank for the music of Greg Beato getting picked up for release by Apron and L.I.E.S. last year. All four 12"s issued in 2013 bearing the name of Greg Beato suggested that the Miami-based producer was capable of crafting some tripped out dancefloor material many veteran artists would be jealous of (not to mention the grip of memorable track titles he's been responsible for). This impression transfers to Beato's record playing skills, with the official L.I.E.S. tagline that he "DJs like a seasoned veteran who has been in the trenches fighting the fight for a long time" more than re-emphasised on his mix for Juno Plus. Clocking in at 75 minutes long, Beato skilfully runs through all manner of unidentifiable techno and electro on a mix that's been getting some serious repeat plays in our office.

Those wishing to catch Greg Beato in his element will be happy to discover that this month sees the youngster embark on a European tour, commencing with in Berlin with further events lined up in Paris, Milan, Frankfurt and a London date with Legowelt and Route 8 for the Find Me In The Dark crew. Despite Beato's acknowledgement that the internet played a key role in his music gaining wider recognition through FunkinEven and Ron Morelli's respective labels, the producer seems less inclined than many of his contemporaries with engaging in the self-promotion game, which made it somewhat of a surprise when he agreed to participate in answering some questions to accompany his mix. Released via Break World Records on the 18th November, The Thermal EP features two deconstructed dancefloor instrumentals and two incredible cuts of downtempo futuristic R&B which we've got on repeat. Jason 'Solvent' Amm has been active since the late 90s, creating numerous indefinable mutations of dance, rich with the pulsing warmth and chaos of analogue circuitry. Recent years have seen Amm serving as producer, co-writer and interviewer for the independent documentary epic I Dream Of Wires exploring the history, demise and resurgence of the ultimate electronic music machine, the Modular Synthesizer. All the while Solvent has pursued the industrial, acidic sounds that have always lain dormant in his work, and this mix for R$N offers an emotional gut punch, with slow, stately machine music giving way to chunks of bristling techno and bursts of quivering, tentatively euphoric melody. We caught up with Amm to discuss just how a producer who doesn't "put a lot of stock into recording mixes" goes about making a mixtape...
