Any of you synth freaks out there will know all about London Modular Alliance. It is the alias of a live electronic act made up of Koova, Yes Effect and Pip Williams, but is also a much loved and cult synth shop of the same name in Hackney, London. In the club, London Modular Alliance do things properly: they cook up brain frying soundtracks, on the fly, with modular synths, no laptops, and many patch cables. Exactly what will go down at any of their shows is unknown even by the men behind the machines, such is their nature, but suffice it to say they always impress. Their studio sounds are equally beguiling and have come on Brokntoys and Hypercolour, and now they make their unique entry into our mix series.  

Clocking in at just over an hour, it is a one of the most alive soundtracks we have heard: the whole thing unfolds and evolves seemingly with a life of its own. There are no joins between tracks, no jarring transitions, just a fluid fusion of electro and techno grooves coated in that raw analogue texture we all love so much. Variously prickly and kinetic, raw and freaky or more supple and seductive, it is a splendid session from some of the finest synth maestros out there.

Helena Hauff et Umwelt se connaissent bien. La hambourgeoise est en effet l’une des signatures du label Rave or Die dont le fondateur n’est autre que…  Umwelt. Il faut dire que les deux producteurs ont tout pour s’entendre. Ils partagent en effet un goût prononcé pour une techno brute, sombre et glaciale.

Autre point commun, Helena Hauff et Umwelt sont chacun à la tête d’un ou plusieurs labels : Return to Disorder pour elle, New Flesh, Shelter, Fundata et donc Rave or Die pour lui. Une manière pour ces deux jusqu’au-boutistes d’éviter les concessions, d’évoluer au rythme de leurs envies dans les méandres de l’underground. Entre noirceur et complicité, ce versus franco-allemand s’annonce donc sous les meilleurs auspices !

Solid Steel (6th December) We continue our run of 30th anniversary shows with Gerd Janson, who is one of the most highly respected DJs in the world of house and techno and also the brain behind the Running Back label, an imprint that has been a home to numerous artists over the years. It’s testament to Janson’s curatorial instinct that music both popular – Tensnake, Todd Terje – and cult – Maurice Fulton, Theo Parrish – feel right at home. In addition to his work helming Running Back, Janson has also teamed up with Philip Lauer under the Tuff City Kids alias. He told us;
"Against all obstacles (technical, time, taste), you are listening to 60 minutes of old (Don Laka (Hello Hunee)). older (James Booth), brand-new (Sascha Funke / Niklas Wandt) and unreleased music (Genius of Time). Don't say we aren't good to you. Ending the year with a bang we bring you a special mix from the one and only Steve Rachmad, the longstanding Dutch techno veteran. A pivotal figure in dance and electronic music, he has cast a spell upon techno in a manner unlike any other, his music championed far and wide by a sprawling array of dj's. Never one to stand still he has channeled his creativity across a number of personalities and guises having released as A Scorpion's Dream, Adverse Match, Black Scorpion, Continuous Cool and of course Sterac. 

His music is machine driven, drawn on a wealth of experience and experimentation through hardware and analogue equipment whilst in the booth his approach as a dj is versatile and constantly changing. 

This mix was recorded at Thuishaven as part of the close of their winter season.
