Simo Cell – TTT Mixtape

Bugged Out turns 30 next year, and this mix is made up of 30 records which represents each of those years from 1994 to 2023.

Myself, Johnno and Lemmy from Bugged Out all reflected on various points in the clubs history and the artists who have helped shape it, and chose records which felt are a representation of the sound of the club, not just historically, but where it stands now. 

Pulling together music from different eras and sounds was a bit of a challenge, and whilst some may not be the biggest track of their respective year - a few will be seen as classics and a healthy amount are perhaps obscure in relation - but to my ears they still sound as brilliant now as they did upon release. 

In a bizarre twist of fate, the oldest record from 1994 is mixed in with the newest from this year, which wasn't intentional. Clocking in at 2 and a half hours, the mix was recorded live in a single take, here in London.

Northallsen Records is an electronic music label founded in Bogotá, Colombia in 2016 by Aleja Sanchez.

The label's sound embraces the realms of hypnotism and explores the fusion between organic soundscapes, experimental and acoustic elements, with the powerful load of techno music, revealing a sonic narrative that flows between the mysticism of ancestral cultures and the spiritual power of nature.

In order to build the concept, far away from trying to emulate a sound, the label curation is focused on artists with their own identity and particular voice, with a foundation into their musical and artistic proposals. Recent releases have featured the likes of Oscar Mulero, Deepbass, Reggy van Oers, Magna Pia, Polygonia, Tekra, !nertia, Psyk, Laertes, Iori and founder Aleja Sanchez.

The label is intended to keep and highlight the deepness and beauty of techno and electronic music since Northallsen considers music as a tool to help bring harmony and peace in the middle of the tragic war-related situation we all are facing currently around the world.

DASCO is a hurricane force with recent roots in Berlin, active for the past decade and packing as strong a punch today as she ever has. That’s as true of her music as it is her persona. She has the kind of rare, contagious energy that’s capable of setting dancefloors ablaze: animated, celebratory and full of joie de vivre. As DJ, she draws from the wells of Chicago house and UR, as much as 90s UK rave: dispatching rhythms from the booths at Tresor, Panorama Bar, RSO, Bristol’s Motion and many more. As producer, she’s released records on the likes of Shall Not Fade and pushed her own vision via her recently launched Bisexuality Exists imprint (2022). Catchy name and it serves a purpose. Through her music, DASCO wants to lift people up, that includes people like herself who identify as bisexual and see a frequent tendency towards bi erasure: ‘With the label, I would like to show the world that music - like life - is rarely ever black or white.’ The label’s first release was the acid influenced Get High With Me, featuring her own vocals and a slew of punchy 90s beats - an attempt to bottle the feeling of dancefloor rapture that washes over a crowd every time she plays. Vera Logdanidi's journey in the music industry began as a DJ in Kyiv, Ukraine during the mid-2000s. Since then, she has made significant strides as a producer, with her music finding a home on esteemed labels such as Rhythm Büro, Semantica Records, On Board Music, Dial Records, Corridor Audio and Secuencias Temporales. Her solo and collaborative tracks have received remix treatments from artists including Eric Cloutier, Artefakt, and Svreca. Moreover, her experiments in collaborations have led to joint live performances with Ukrainian producer Na Nich.
Apart of producing her own music, Vera frequently tours both domestically and internationally. Her wide range of music allows her to express her vision to both small and large crowds. Her sets have reverberated through iconic venues including Bassiani, Panorama Bar, Tresor, Closer, ∄ and other venues. Her name frequently graces the lineups of esteemed festivals, including Monument Festival, Ickra, Strichka, Brave Factory Festival, Up To Date Festival and many others. These diverse platforms have provided her the freedom to show different musical styles, ranging from powerful, groovy or mental techno to experiments with music on the verge of house, ambient and occasionally delve into jungle, which holds a special place in her musical journey. Aside from producing and touring she is co-running Rhythm Büro events. One of the most unique events produced by Rhythm Büro is the Natura festival, which takes place once a year in a remote location outside Ukraine’s capital. Despite the event's secrecy, remoteness, and limited promotion, Natura attracts over 4,000 guests each year, with early-bird tickets selling out within the first hour of the event's announcement.

Mia Koden (@miakoden) first emerged as half of Sicaria Sound but since breaking out alone has established her own musical identity. It draws on her South Sudanese heritage and music from across the African continent and beyond, not least her current surroundings in South London and the city's rich sound system culture. Often operating around the 140BPM mark, she dropped two head-turning tracks ‘Hot Take' and 'I Did’ early last year then debuted on Ilian Tape with a dark and irresistible EP that traverses multiple bass-heavy genres.

Mia does the same with her mix for us this week with, in her words, "bass, percussive, 2step, 140BPM, dubstep, dub, dub techno and breaks" all coming thick and fast at up to 150 beats per minute. It's a breathless 90-minute selection of global body music packed with lively percussion, big on low ends and not afraid to get rhythmically inventive while also dropping in the odd playful vocal from the worlds of grime and r&b. Both technically sound and tastefully assembled, it's a thrilling statement from the vital Koden.

Since its inception in 2014, Level has evolved from filling dancefloors in small Bushwick dive bars to becoming a staple of NYC's nightlife scene, with a recent expansion to Miami showing they are still in ascension. Andrew, along with his team of five residents, has cultivated a musical ethos that spans from tasteful record selections to peak-time party curveballs, showcasing his versatility and range as a gifted DJ. His opening set at Sustain Release in 2022 exemplifies this, seamlessly blending Carly Simon, Beck, Portishead, and Chaka Khan with cutting-edge dance music. We knew Andrew would deliver a stellar selection for our Sessions series, and he has certainly exceeded our expectations.

Australia is pushing things forward in the best way. For a long time the country self confessed to feelings of isolation and disconnection from the broader world of electronic music. Taking things into their own hands, this has very much changed and in all honesty some of the best and most exciting DJ’s are really down under.

SLG is a record label run by Strict Face – a producer and DJ who is helping to push a new wave of Bass music. It’s hard hitting, off piste and all over the place – moving quickly between tempos with jarring, disjointed sound design it’s fast paced and exciting.

This mix is very much a testament to that frenetic energy.

Based in Adelaide, he represents a new school of thought and is giving things a much needed shake up.
